Does it ordinarily get power from a battery?

Not ordinarily no, as a matter of fact it rarely did until about five years ago. Now it does on a regular basis, but it's still not the main way it receives power. 14 questions.

Does it have an electronic circuit?

I'll give a freebee. For most of the people on this forum it is...

No, but it uses them. It's kind of a co-dependant relationship if you will. 11 questions.

So when it has a battery, that battery is typically for backup power when mains/wall power fails?

No, not really. Though it can cause other things to do so. 11 Questions.

Nope, it's the primary power source in many cases. Though in most cases wall power is the primary source. It's often suggested to get a battery, just incase the power goes out...

Does it make noise?

...And if so, is the noise triggered by a special event (as opposed to being a constant part of its operation)?

It can be made to make noise, and most of the ways I've seen it, it makes a noise right when it starts.

Nine Questions left...

Here's a hint, since I don't believe in actually getting to the 20th question. 99.9% of the people on this forum have used this, some use the ugly side, most use the pretty side.

It's a thing...
It's a fairly common household device...
It's not mechanical...
It has it's own internal logic, but it's not a calculating device and it's not designed by Apple...
It is electrically powered, usually from the wall, but it could use a battery backup...
It does not produce light...
It can cause other things to produce light...
It can be made to make noise and usually does so when it starts...
It has an ugly side and a pretty side...
The pretty side is used more often than the ugly side...

Until you wrote that bit about the ugly and pretty sides, I was all ready to say that it must be an electric thermostat or a water heater or a microwave oven... Now you've thrown me.

Is the noise that it makes produced through a speaker?

You're heading in the right direction, yes it does make that noise through a speaker. Eight Questions left (I never figured this would be this hard!)

I haven't been following this one, but I think it's an alarm clock.

In light of chabig's answer I think I want to make three clarifications:

One: It would be a common household item for people on this forum, but not in the majority of households.

Two: It's not necessarily designed by Apple...but...(and this is where I give it all away), it is modified by Apple.

Three: It's probably more accurate to say that it can make other things (like speakers) make noise, and that it doesn't inherently make noise on it's own.

And, no, it's not an alarm clock. Seven Questions.

Is the answer to the other riddle - the one that waxes and wanes - time? or a clock - which has arms that open and close.

Yes! You got it.

It's a clock.

No, not really. Interesting stab in the dark, I must admit. The thing in question needs electricity to run... Six Questions.

No, but...ah, that would be giving it away to much. You're just going to have to go with, "No, but..." and see if that helps you. Five questions left.

If we get down to three questions I'll give a really big hint, k?

Um, no. But it does contain drivers that can accomplish the purpose of making a DVD-R drive store information. And, it can be made to store information in memory. Heck, I've interacted with this "thing" through Java to create some really fun linked lists! .

If I'd known how hard this one might be...Four Questions.
