Referring to the original post .... I have a 2Wire as well.
(You may need to first hook up to the 2wire with your ethernet cable, then from there you can access the router settings.) By default the network name for the 2wire is "2WIRExxx", where xxx are the last three digits of the units serial number. So if the s/n ends in 416 your wireless network ssid will be 2WIRE416. If nothing has changed on the 2wire, set up the wireless connection on the Macbook in the network preferences as connecting to a specific network, and use the "2WIRExxx" name, set it up as wep, and use the numbers inside the brackets on the bottom of the unit. If you manage to connect by wired ethernet, you can get into the router by going to http://home from there you can hide the ssid, change the security to WPA, set up all kinds of fun stuff.... OK not really. You may first have to establish the wired connection.... That's why I mentioned it above... maybe not... I've done this before with a 2wire, and for once may be able to actually help.

I will tell you what I know. You can configure workgroups in order to share files between those computers. for that you need a router or connecting computers directly. But when I was a PC user and I bought ADSL service it came with 2wire as a "modem". And I discovered that going to "home" in my browser I had acces to the "modem" and there you can go to home network (that I didn't configure) and get acess to all shared files inside the network. When I acces to home from a PC I can see what other computers are sharing, but when I use my macbook I cannot (and pc users cannot see me sharing files). Why is that? I don't know. And that was the question. Maybe there are thousands of ways to share files but I got used to doit trough 2wire home network cause it was quite easy. I don't know if I made my point, but if you have a 2wire modem you can try and do as I said. thanks! |

Okay, you must make sure that you have windows file sharing enabled, and choose an account to do this. You do so through the control panels.
Now once sharing is enabled and running just hit cmd + K on your mac keyboard and browse for your PCs. Another good app to control all of this is called sharepoints, and you can download it here. http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/ |

also can't connect new Macbook to 2wire router
One week ago I received my brand new Macbook. After 6 hours with various tech support folks from 2wire, Apple and AT&T I am still no closer to connecting via airport to my wireless network.
I tried the suggestions posted here, nothing worked. Any other suggestions? |

If you have tried making the wireless network public and that doesnt work, then I dont know any other way, 'cause that should work with any public wireless network.

I just got mine working, had all the same problems, the old Powerbook g4 worked and the new MacBook (Core2) didn't. Go into your 2wire and first enable DHCP then after that change the SSID to something other than 2WIRExxx, i first tried matt with wireless security disabled (it worked on both computers) then i changed to a SSID i liked and turned wireless security back on with "WEP-Open" and "Use default encryption key" Put the $ infront of the 10 digit number on the bottom of the 2wire and you should be set.
Good luck! |

It seems I am having the same problem as dpack - I can connect to other wireless networks, but not my 2Wire network. I've contacted both Apple and 2Wire, and each is pointing to the other. I will try these suggestions later today and post the outcome.
Also - I don't think I can enter the "$" before the password - it won't accept that character. Thanks - |

I applied the update but no luck. I am not able to type the character "$" before the password - it won't accept it.
Any ideas? |

I am in the same position as the rest of you who have the new Macbook (Core 2 Duo). After extensive tech support sessions with ATT (SBC) and Apple, the guy at ATT (2Wire support) finally admitted outright that the router/modem model that I have (1800) is simply NOT compatible with OS 10.2 or higher. I have had the router for about a year. He suggested that I PURCHASE a new router (Model 2701) from them for $109, but he could not confirm 100% if it would work, but he said that it "should". I am trying to get the router for free from ATT (SBC), but so far they have only agreed to adjust half of the cost. I'm not sure how I will proceed, but I am frustrated.

I humbly beg to differ. I've had nothing but a 2WIRE with my Macs, and never had a problem, either with wired, or wireless connectivitiy.
For those having issues, please make sure you have the correct name for your wireless network,(from the settings on the router) are broadcasting that SSID, and you have the network open, with no encryption. (I will assume that you have a working wired connection) Once you establish communication this way, you can go step by step, changing the settings on the router and Mac one at a time. I'd start by first hiding the SSIDon the router. You must then tell your Mac in the network preferences to connect to the specific network name that is the SSID on the router. If that works, you can then enable your security on the router. I'd use WPA not WEP, as most people feel WEP is pretty lame. Go back into the Mac network settings, and fix up your encryption to match what you've entered in the router. Really, it should work.... I even altered the 2wire connection settings to be my id and password so the router connects as me and I never need to deal with that on the Mac side. Good luck!

mo... I assume you can connect with a wired network....
Can you connect at a public wireless area like a local Starbucks or other area where there is access that you know works... If that fails, maybe your wireless card is hosed.... If you've done this and tried all the above, I am indeed stumped - but since I'm not a network admin that ain't too hard to do!

Same probs
Hey! I was able to connect by changing it to wireless channel 7 but then it said that the problem was with the service provider, internet and the server, because it successfully connected but I wasn't able to open a page because of that.
I have 2WIRE and Intel Core 2 Duo....and TIVO, are you from Mexico? Thanks and Happy New Year to everybody! |

I just set up my father-in-law's new Intel Mini with a 2Wire. Started out with a wired connection until I put in the password (no $ in front). Everything worked fine from the get-go.

2WIRE WEP password: $!
For what it's worth, I am a brand new convert from PC to Mac, and just purchased a MacBook Core 2 laptop.
I was quite dissapointed with the lack of help from the Mac OS regarding the wireless connection to my 2WIRE router, because with Windows it was as simple as entering the network password, a 10 digit number found at the bottom of the router. After looking through these posts, I tried using the $ in front of the password, and it worked the first time! |

I just plugged in the ethernet cable and connected to http://home. Changed ssid to not broadcast, disabled wireless security again, and changed the network name from 2wirexxx to another name. went to airport with the cable still in, clicked connect to other network, typed in the name, clicked no security, and.... connected! Now will somebody please explain to me what is going on before i go mad. : \

Mo, you're lucky to get a connection at all.
Just got a MacBook 2 days ago (I'm trying to convert my husband to Mac) and am having exactly the same problem as arashikitty and krquake. Can't connect wirelessly to a 2wire router that came with my AT&T service and have had the router for only a year. Wired connection works great and wireless works fine with PCs. Not a good start for converting from a PC since my hubby uses his laptop wirelessly A LOT. Tried everything: changing the WEP password, different ways of entering the password ($, 0x, and 0X preceding the actual numbers), changing to WPA protection, removing password protection all together, changing channels from 1 through 11, and nothing has worked. After reading this discussion I decided not to waste actual phone time with AT&T, Apple, or 2wire. Tried email support from 2wire, but they haven't been helpful at all. Checked the MacBook on 2 other wireless networks (public, one password protected) and it works flawlessly. The router is just plain not compatible with Mac OS 10.4.8 as far as I can tell. I actually tried to get to some of my iMac files through the network with a PC laptop a few days ago and it wasn't working. I didn't pay much attention to it, but I think it has something to do with the same incompatibility. That connection had worked when I set it up a long time ago with my previous Netgear router. Went out today to get a new Netgear router, unfortunately I just sold my old one on eBay. After a few short setup steps, the network is accessible wirelessly to the MacBook, 2 PC laptops, a printer, and wired to my iMac. I'm disappointed with 2wire and AT&T for teaming up with such a bogus company, and I'm out an extra $40, but I've got a happy man at home and there's a lot to be said for that. My advice, drop the PC friendly 2wire (have you seen their website support topics?! nothing on Mac!) and get a universal router. |
