Mouse freezing linked to airport?
Just a note guys - I seem to have an additional problem whereby the mouse pointer occasionally freezes during use (either that or the trackpad locks) never to return. I can still access the force quit screen and use the keys - but the trackpad just seems to die. When I force shut down and restart, I've had the airport icon dissappear from the toolbar, and the actual hardware itself was listed as 'not installed' when checking in the network config. I'm wondering if anyone has had similar problems and if the airport might possibly be related?? |

I have a third party (Adesso) USB keyboard _with a built in trackpad_ that I use with my iMac G5. I suffer from mousepointer freezes quite frequently. It tends to happen when
- selecting from a menu - using the scroll function on the right edge of the trackpad - typing a username or password on the typical dialog box or some such action while - for example - the machine is busily working to display a webpage full of those irritating, processor hogging, Java or Javascript applets. In my case, since it's an external device, I don't have to re-start. Unplugging and re-plugging the USB jack brings the pointer back to life. Methinks this is related to some kind of timing/priority issue -and/or, in my case, to the fact that I do use a third party utility (MouseZoom) so that the speed of the pointer becomes bearable. With Apple's original software, it would take forever to move to pointer from A to B on these wide screens. |

I would seriously kill for someone that gives me the exact parameters apple uses for the trackpad In Linux I cannot get my parameters to match exactly to the osx stuff. That annoyed me very much when dual booting. Since after the airport attack my computer only ran linux, I don't make it a problem :P |

I had that mouse pointer problem too, but not often. And it is quite strange indeed, at least because airport is on the pci bus, while the trackpad is an usb device, so there should be no interaction between them. |

yes, had it too.
only the first few times interestingly, since then the ibook crashes without it. (not anymore of course as i've turned off airport and do the pressing thing when booting) |

Same behavior here as with mija's ibook.
Has anyone except for VeryBadApple tried to lift out the AppleAirPort2.kext extension? |

i lifted out the "AppleAirport2.kext" extension and am now running smoothly with built-in ethernet. (the $10 to buy and ethernet cable splitter was far more reasonable than going to the Apple Store in SoHo and watching them replace every part of my iMac).
so: no wireless now but at least i'm back in the game. there will be hell to pay. |

Ben Hines, the author of MouseZoom, may be able to help you. His email is published on the MouseZoom site, so I assume he won't mind my passing it along: bhines@alumni.ucsd.edu |

I just registered to add to the annoyed crowd.
I've just filled out the survey too. Same story as everyone else. Panics only when the airport is enabled . . and then usually if I move it. 1.33ghz ibook 12" No dual-booting here. No apple-care left. Leaves one angry customer who was about to buy a new imac . . starting to have change of heart. May go the beige box x86 route. Hope this mess gets resolved quick; until then I plan on making this thing panic often and sending angry letters with my panic reports to apple. |

Similar problems here too. With 1,33Ghz iBook 12"... if airport is enabled it causes kernel panic. Booting problems occur also if there's a wireless network in range and airport is on. Might this problem have something to do with the recently found vulnerabilities in airport? If somebody has found a way to corrupt the firmware of airport? The first "virus/exploit/damage code" for osx???! |

I'm having the same problem, but I don't know what to do. Kernel Panics when airport card on. None when off.

Yet another one. Showed up friday night and got progressively worse of the following two days.
Here are the notes: MacOS X 10.4.8 1.33 ghz iBook 12" barebones (no added ram, hd, upgrades, etc.) Bought end of August 2005 On a side note, this has made me appreciate PC's more (mac is nice, but there seems to be an utter lack of control & info when things go bad in comparison to any PC I have worked with). I noticed something other's didn't seem to mention. It crept up. On friday it happened totally at random whereas by sunday it was almost guaranteed to crash the instant airport came on. HOWEVER it appears that if I let it sit turned off for a while there would be a delay before it actually crashed (so if I turned it off for 1/2 hour or so then came on I could use airport for a while before it crashed). |

I have the same situation. Kernel panics happen with the Airport card is on. They never happen when it's off. I can connect to the Internet via ethernet and browse all day if Airport is off. The moment I turn it on, the KP happens. My iBook is about 16 months old. Here's what I've done.
Repaired permissions several times Reset PMU several times Took out Apple installed RAM at time of purchase (still experienced kernel panics with RAM out) Did Extended Apple Hardware test. Everything was fine. Did complete reinstall of factory settings. (still experienced kernel panics) Tried to find Airport Extreme card to see if it was dislodged. Couldn’t find it. It’s not under the keyboard. Kernel panics happen with the Airport card is on every time, but never off. Is it possible to open the iBook and take out the Airport Card and reset it? I need some help. |

If your airport card is not underneath the keyboard then it is a later revision of the iBook and the Airport 'card' is now a non-removable chip on the logic(mother)board. In related news, I took my iBook again today to the place I purchased it and asked why it a) still didn't work and b) what they supposedly did with it last time; they told me an engineer will phone me Friday and that it's a software problem; I don't think it is but I guess I'll find out Friday. |

Has anyone tried turning the airport on with no network in range/no network chosen?
Mine doesn't crash when either of the above is true; it just remains on and I can use the machine. |

that's interesting, did Apple tell you any details about why they had to replace the airport card? The hardware itself or corrupted firmware...
