I'm unfortunately also part of the KP club. After a discussion with Apple (I was out of guarantee but as a protection of customers in The Netherlands they needed to repair my Ibook for about 100 €) the decided to replace the logicboard. This new one lasted for two months. Fortunately not long enough to outrun the warranty again. So they replaced it again. I already lost confidence and not without a reason. Today I picked up my I book and when I started up the system it was KP time all over again. So a new logicboard is also not a good solution. It's time Apple start to acknowledge there is a construction failure.

Hi ratopreis,
That sound very bad that a company (any who made it) not give garanty on his own work. If the computer has not any more garanty the work should have.
My guess is that they repaired what you have and not change any part.
It is when the doctor give paracethamol. The symtom goes away for while and the sickness stay as it is. This also shows the computer has design fault or/and manufacture problem.

After sending the email to 'Steve', I received a phone call too. (by which I was very pleased). The lady told me (I was given the choice between french or english) that she would report the problem. I have a feeling that things are moving...

Hi everyone,

just want to (or rather "wouldn’t want to") join the Airport/kernelpanic club with two more iBooks. One at work, one at home. This problem seems to get bigger & bigger...

My only solution this far seems to be to disable AP and use a D-link DWL-122 USB thingy. I might be the only one in universe that´s gotten it to work properly but it *does* work on 10.4.10 with driver 1.4.7. Sure beats replacing various parts for hundreds of dollars just to find that the same problem occurs again (as it has done on our ibook at work but that one is under APP so it´s "just" a matter of sending it away for another 2 months).

Will Apple ever see that this is an existing problem?

Hi guys, I've been absent for a while but I've got some news. Don't get too excited since they're not what one would say good, they aren't bad either.
Last month I stumble across the MUG in Uruguay. I registered and met a nice guy that happens to be an Apple certified technician. He offered to check my iBook. He ran some test and found out that if he started the iBook without the Airport card, the machine worked flawlessly, but if he started it with the Airport card connected, KP started right away. Now my iBook doesn't have the Airport connected and I can use it, reset it, shut it down... The only thing I don't have is Wi-fi, but since I didn't have it before It doesn't bother me. I'm pleased to know I can use it normally, except connecting wireless .
I'm waiting for a brand-new Airport card to arrive. He told me it would come on early sept. So hopefully there's not much more waiting to do.
I'll post any news as soon as I know anything.
Cya!

3 repairs in 3 months

Hi all- new to the forum, but not new to the kernel panic/Airport dillemma.

I have an iBook G4 that I purchased in January of 2006. Extra HD, extra ram.

One week out of warranty in January of 2007 I got my first kernel panic, missing Airport, etc. I immediately went to the Apple Store hoping they'd be nice and cover any repair it needed. I was told to archive and install and come back if I still had problems.

Of course I still had problems. So, I tried the clamp trick, etc, and managed to get by for a few months. Then in May the kernel panics became so frequent and unstoppable that I had to take it back to the Genius Bar. This time they ran some tests and said my hard drive was crashing, I had a faulty logic board, my Aiport card was disfunctional, and my extra ram was failing. $300 later they had replaced my HD, my logic board, and my Airport card, but said the ram retested fine so it wasn't replaced.

One month later: kernel panic city, USA. I went back to the Genius Bar immediately, and it was repaired yet again. Logic board replaced AGAIN, Aiport replaced AGAIN. For good reason, I was skeptical this would work, and sure enough, two weeks later: kernel panics.

Back to the genius bar, and this time, the genius said I definitely had a ram problem. No question about it. He didn't know why they hadn't replaced the ram after the first diagnostic test. So... ram was replaced.

That was two weeks ago. Last week, kernel panics again. Airport not recognized. Clearly not just a ram problem. I have a Genius Bar appointment tomorrow, after which I'll update this.

Not sure what they'll do at this point. I mean, I've had virtually every major component replaced. Has anyone ever had their computer replaced by Apple after multiple, frequent, and ineffective repairs?

Hello fellow KP's!
Just a quick update and what I've done:
1. Registered on Skinkie's site, http://uva.hobby-site.com/~skinkie/apple.html

2. "Signed" this petition: http://www.PetitionOnline.com/ibook123/ also named "iBook Logic Board Failure"

3. Went to my local Apple store to get a case #. Specifically, I went to the Corte Madera store, my genius' name was John Rivera and my case# is 83357298. I brought with me the press release from Denmark, http://www.forbrug.dk/presse/nyheder...ok-g4-english/ and also copies of the link to this thread. Both were noted in my case.

Hey, Skinkie, do you think we could add a line to your registry that, if applicable, would note anyones case# with Apple?

Thanks, everyone.

iBookG4 / kernel panics

I have had my iBook G4 since March 2006. Around the end of August, it started experiencing Kernel Panics. After troubleshooting for two days, I went online to find out that others have similar problems. I sent an email to "Steve" on Labor Day and got a phone call from Apple the day after. The lady said she would report the problem to the engineers. She added that as of now there isn't enough evidence to conclude an existence of any kind of design flaw. (Not enough people complain or something like that). She suggested that I take my iBookG4 for service, which would cost me about $300 and would be covered by a 90 day warranty.

I registered on Skinkie's site, http://uva.hobby-site.com/~skinkie/apple.html

I signed" this petition: http://www.PetitionOnline.com/ibook123/ named "iBook Logic Board Failure"

I AM URGING OTHERS DO TO THE SAME. Perhaps then Apple will admit there is a problem and something will be done.
I am glad that my problem is not an isolated incident and I am waiting for a solution from Apple. Thanks to everybody that posted.

Karen12345, the only other thing you might want to do is go to an Apple store and get a case #.

Whatever they want to do, when you have it serviced will not work. It may for a bit, then things are back to "normal".

Of course, depending on where you are located, getting to an Apple store may be a challenge. If not, then I strongly recommend it. Feel free to have them reference my case #83357298.

Great news from the Danish folk again:
http://mediamac.comon.dk/index.php/news/show/id=17805

To give an update: we are around 75 full registrations. Very unique cases, but many are in the same serial groups. One could say the production batches are affected:

4H53, 4H54, 4H55, 4H60, 4H61, UV3, UV4

Btw. I wonder if any one contacted the laywers of the Class Action Suit again.

What lawyers for the class action suit???

Give me names and I'll contact them. I'm currently doing temporary receptionist work and have lots of time to call, email, badger whomever we need...

Thanks Lauren,
I have an Apple store about 5 miles away from me, so I can get there easily. I wanted to avoid going there because I have very little patience left at this stage and didn't want to pour my frustration over an innocent sales associate. I will likely go this weekend, but I won't let them do any repairs. Thanks again.

I visited Apple store today and got a case number. They were reluctant to create a case after I said I had no intention of getting any repairs at that time. They first said I should call 1-800-APL-CARE and report my concern directly to the customer service department. Eventually, one of the geniuses filed some kind of report. I asked him to reference the Denmark case and this forum. I wonder if anything will actually happen.

Angry Airport Kernel Panic Strikes Again!

Hello All,

I'm sorry to meet everyone this way!

I too have an iBook G4 12" (serial # beginning 4H53) purchased in August 2005 that has just started kernel panicking two days ago... I was actually online when it began! I guess I'm lucky it didn't begin sooner from what I've read here!

I tried running disk utility, hardware check, and reloading the original OS X (10.4.2) from the CDs. The only way my iBook doesn't KP is if I shut the Airport off.

I registered on Skinkie's site, http://uva.hobby-site.com/~skinkie/apple.html

I also signed this petition: http://www.PetitionOnline.com/ibook123/ named "iBook Logic Board Failure."

I was wondering if anyone in the US has contacted their state attorney general about this? Or if that's even an option since the machines are out of warranty?

If anyone has any suggestions on what else to do short of meeting in Cupertino with picket signs, I'm eager to hear!!!

Apple surrenders in my case!!!

Hi Guys,

Last week Apple repaired my iBook again. They replaced the logicboard for the fourth time. They told me when this repair wouldn't work I would get a new laptop. And as mentioned above I got a casenumer. This morning it all went wrong again, kernel panics again and I called Apple. They will provide me a new MaBook. So hang in there!! Be polite but decisive when you try to find a solution. You deserve a working laptop and not one which is working without WIFI.

Good luck!!

Anne

Wow, Anne!!!
Congrats on your persistance paying off! I too am considering having them "fix" it with a new logic board as many times as they deem necessary in order to get some real satisfaction.

And again.....same problem here with the airport card. I have a iBook G4 bougt on sept 2005. Problems started a couple months ago. It seems that this model only has these problems. Strange though that it almost all happened after the 10.4.8 update cause it seems to be a hardware/design problem. Maybe it's just a coincidence because these are all iBooks from the same period.

But great news from Denmark! Think that we in the Netherlands could profit from that too?
