Best of luck Wadlmac,
if there's anything I can do to help or test, my little ibook is more than willing to go through any surgery :-/

Just so I get this straight, you just replaced those files with ones from past tiger versions?

Question so yeah i´m also one with that crazy airport problem

Hey all,

So now I’m here too, only want to say yeah I’m also one of thousand or more
with that problem.
I work at an Apple authorised service partner in Germany.
First I thought my Airport card had some hardware problems so I changed the
airport card, next thing was the logic board.
And yes still I have that problem ;(

So what you prefer to do?
Now I’m so long without wlan... its bad

cheers

Ferdinand from south Germany

Hi,

what I did.
  • I exchanged some airport related kernel extensions.
  • I tried a scratch installation 10.4.3
  • I played around with the WLAN router settings (WEP, WPA, no encrytion)
But nothing helped. The kernel panics did not disappear.

Meanwhile I found this thread at Apple - Support named airport causes kernel panic.

Because I still have warranty on the iBook I will bring it to an Apple Authorised Service Provider. At least I want to tell them that there is a severe problem and that Apple has to pay for the fix because of warranty. But I fear they can do nothing in the moment.

My own attempt to fix the problem I will give it up.

Have nice weekend (w/o WLAN)
wadlmac

P.S. I think it is a major bug in the airport firmware

Hi MarSAttK,

I hoped it would help, but after the installation of 10.4.9 I needed to restart my computer, as soon as it wanted to restart I got the black screen and i needed to restart several times. So, no improvement I'm afraid.

has anybody here bought a usb wlan modem, so he/she can use wlan on a airport panicking mac? i'll need wlan through the coming months, but i still don't want to pay for a new logic board.

so if somebody could recommend a good usb wlan stick...?

thank you!

The iBook that Alan fixed

Hey, Alan! Does your airport still work in your "fixed" iBook?

Howdy,
I have had around 2 or 3 KPs, but apart from that, everything is fine.

Hi, All

I'm the other known success story on this issue. BUT... I'm on an iMac G5: bigger and more rigid box (the rigid part limiting chances for the AP Extreme to be unseated), and - one can reasonably infer - much greater air circulation / refrigeration.

The heat issue is the 2 in the one-two punch tha this "issue" is made up of:

1.- the card becomes improperly seated. The connection becomes light/loose, as opposed to tight/firm. THIS, IN ITSELF, causes

2.- a rise in temperature.

Which, in turn, may trigger a KP (particularly those apparently "random" ones that happen "right in the middle of things", as one was happily going about one's work, doing nothing exotic or violent to the machine).

My (obviously, sedentary) machine hasn't suffered a KP since I reported the unseating/reseating fix something like a month ago.

IF there is a separate firmware issue (which there might, for all I know) THEN perhpaps Security Update 08-2006 fixed it for me. I say this because I did install that update while I was operating with the AirPort2.kext disabled. BUT it officially has nothing to do with AirPort, and the thing that made the difference was reseating the card firmly in position.

On another note. Someone was asking about USB Wireless dongles that might work on the Mac. I haven't actually used any of the ones I'll proceed to mention, but I gathered them from reports on the net by people who claim to have used them. The key here is the Chipset on a device. Manufactureres frequently change chipsets while keeping the exact same model number. Some chipsets are paired with mac drivers, while others are not.

Devices reported to work: D-Link DWL G122 (two different types: one with a Ralink chipset, another with a Prism-Intersil chipset). There are mac drivers for both of these chipsets.

Two more devices with a Ralink chipset: Edimax 7318USg, ASUS WL-167G

MSI US54SE, ZyXEL ZyAir G-220 v2, Gigafast WF748-CUI based on the Zydas zd1211 chipset and driver. Get this driver at

ftp://ftp.zyxeltech.de/ZyDAS/ZD1211_...ll_4_5_7_0.dmg

Get Ralink drivers at ralinktech.com (Support, Mac, whatever. One last note to the inattentive: watch out, they have _separate_ drivers for Panther and Tiger)

Did you ever figure out how to replace your airport card yourself? I am also having difficulty finding it. The instructions I found on the DIY area on the Apple site show a different iBook than what I have.
