Another user. Same problems.

Hi all!

I stumbled across this forum a few weeks ago, and finally just registered now just for the sake of adding another person to the many who are experiencing problems with KPs related to airport.

My iBook is a late 2005 model (purchased in August 2005) with integrated airport. I have been experiencing airport KPs since early February, almost immediately after installing the update that has been mentioned in this forum leading me to believe it was a software problem. I formatted and reinstalled OS X 10.4, but I stilled experience KPs when trying to use airport, and my ibook starts to a black screen as has been described in this thread. The ONLY way that i can get my ibook to start is by SQUEEZING the left hand size of the computer!

While I do not experience KPs when airport is disabled at all, I have since uninstalled the airport drivers (deleting the .kext files) in order to eliminate the possibility of turning it on by accident. I still experience the black screen at startup if I do not squeeze the iBook, but experience no kernel panics while the machine is running - and of course, I am no longer able to use wireless Internet.

While this is obviously a hardware problem, it is an interesting phenomenon that this seems to be occuring to everyone around the same time. Couldn't help but notice that most of the discussion seems to be centered around iBooks that are 1+ years old and much of the discussion has taken place in January/February 2007.

I have not yet tried to contact Apple about this matter, and based on what I've seen on this forum that wouldn't appear to be to useful. I'm not really in the mood to hear someone on the other end of the phone denying that a problem exists, or telling me I need a new $300 logic board because of Apple's faulty workmanship.

Another user. Same problems.

Hi there, sign me up on that list since my iBook G4 12 inch mid 2005 with MacOS 10.4.8 (bought around october 2005) started KP around january. Same problems, KP with Airport on, none when off. I used the ibook without it and no turning it off (or resetting) since it blacked out every time and took a while to get it booting (when not getting into the "open firmware" screen with the post-mac-boot folder and the "?" symbol). Just for the record, I live in uruguay, far away from any "trustable" apple service. the solution provided by some users here seem to be my only chance here. Just want to say thank you all in advance for giving me some kind of hope. Knowing we're not alone is way better.
See you around

Hey All,

Also got the same problem,
iBook G4 12"

Just from reading others posts, I dont think this is SMS related, card seating could be a cause, pressing around the airport area is sometimes causing KP.

But also I seem to get KP after KP if I just turn off then turn back on again, but if I let it settle/cool for a while it seems fine. I'm thinking some sort of heat issue? I could smell that something was getting hot in there.

On boot i'm just getting black screen with chimes.

Thumbs down

Well all, it now looks as though my Mac is truly on the way out.
As related to a few other people's problems, my Mac has gone beyond the KP's with the airport - now I have to turn it on about 6-10 times, putting pressure on the lower right keys, just to get it to boot in properly.
Normally I get the chime and then just a black screen. Sometimes it whirrs really heavily and goes to open firmware and the finder questionmark folder (meaning it can't find the HD, right?), or just stays black and acts completely dead.
Sounds like the logic board has started packing up.

I just want Apple to know that I'm having loads of fun taking my £700 laptop out of the house, sitting down in the coffee place and then re-booting my machine 20 times in a row, people around me listening to the stupid chime over and over, before finally getting in to the system and connecting wirelessly to check some emails, only to have the system meltdown.

What a purchase.

I think we should start considering taking THE LIST to a carefully chosen quality department within Apple headquarters.
And NOT some Apple store or repair center, they will never help us.

Skinkie said 35 a couple of days ago. I don't know how many there are needed before Apple start looking on things.

But millions of mid-2005 ibooks must have been manufactured, so the list should theoretically grow, right?

I hope so, there is no way I can afford new parts.

We need to get more people looking at this topic and the list I guess digg and such could be a real helping hand.

Also has anyone tried to contact apple? what was their general reply?

--------

Ok well, I was bored of this so got my screwdriver and went on a mission.
First of all my mission was successful

I removed my airport card, cleaned out any dirt that had got in there, then put the card back in place, I did a number of tests pushing the card to see if I could cause KP, also there is a gray stick on the airport card, I made sure that was stuck to the card properly.

All seems fine now, I can poke the card and also just sit surfing with no KP.

Just a word of warning though.
The power button connect on the logic board is very weak and comes off very easy .

I will make photos tomorrow of the whole process of taking iBook apart and the card while I resolder the power connector back on :P

Hope you have better luck with this than I did Alan.
I did pretty much the exact same thing and it lasted me about three days.
I have bought another airport extreme module from ebay and I'm going to see if that makes a diff.
Anyhow, good luck!

I hope it holds up, going well so far, and will keep everyone posted.
Shame I got to use screwdriver to short the power pins to make it turn on

Please keep us updated with your findings too.

This forum now on digg.com

I've posted a link to this thread on digg.com, per someone's suggestion. Please sign up for a digg account (if you don't already have one), and search for this story in the Apple section. I've titled it "Apple 12in iBook wi-fi cards FAIL, cause kernel panics 1 yr after purchase!"

All caps and exclamation marks tend to get people's attention on digg, so my apologies. Anyway, search for this story and "digg" it to get us some attention. Every little bit helps. Thanks.

Well I've talked to Consumer Relations and the person supposedly speaking for Steve Jobs and what it boils down to is there's no plan in helping us. I submitted a complaint with the Better Business Bureau but my laptop is almost gone and I'm just going to have to purchase another one.

Sorry to say, Apple has officially lost another customer.

If you want the status/link to my compliant here it is. Doubt it'll help anymore.
I really expected more from Apple, you know? Either way...here's the info. I'll be checking to see if anything pops up, but I pretty much have given up hope on them fixing -their- mistake.

Hi everybody,

just wanted to say that I'm having the same problems as you are having with your computers. I'm also experiencing kernel panics since february 2007, black screens, etc. I also turned off my airport, so, no wireless for me either
The problems started about 4 days after my 1 year warranty ended.
On the one hand it's a relief to see that i am not the only one with this problem, but on the other it's a shame that Apple won't admit that there is a serious problem! I hope that Apple comes up with a solution!

Hi,

I"m also new here and have the same problem with my iBook G4. Up to now I tried it with a scratch installation (Version 10.4.9), ran the Apple HW Test (no problem found), resetted the PRAM, etc. But nothing helped. Whenever I switch on Airport my iBook G4 (1 GByte, 1,33 GHz, ...) crashes.

I opened an Apple Bug, but up to now got no answer from Cupertino.

I also entered my data at the Airport Panic Attack Website.

Angry Exchanging Airport2 driver probably may solve kernel panic.

With the tool Pacifist I exchanged the following three files:

/System/Library/Extensions/AppleAirPort2.kext/Contents/Info.plist
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleAirPort2.kext/Contents/MacOS/AppleAirPort2
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleAirPort2.kext/Contents/version.plist

and = no kernel panic anymore only for some hours

but now = KERNEL PANIC IS BACK AGAIN

I'm going to exchange other extensions or switch back to old Tiger version and let you know.
