Hi I have a 12" iBook G4, 1.33 Ghz with 1.5 Gigs of ram.

I just started having kernel panics during use and boot this January.

Thanks to some info on here I just figured out that my airport card seems to trigger these panics, at least for now. My laptop was also made in 2005. The original applecare expired august of 2006, how convenient for apple. I'm glad I found this forum because I'm extremely pissed off about this.

They said they will locate the engineer and ask him, haven't heard yet tho, and just booted and moved my machine and....kernel panic, lol.

Just an update on the mouse freezing /airport connection!

The mouse freezing is 100% related to the airport - I've looked very closely at the activity.
It seems to be the equivalent of a KP - without the screen darkening and the message. If you have the same thing, watch how the airport indicator in the top right goes from being in range and on (fully blacked out) to switching itself off and turning grey.
As soon as the mouse stops, this is guaranteed every time, and then it's either a ton of KP's to get back into the mac, or the mac doesn't recognise any airport hardware as installed on reboot. So odd, and so very, very wrong.
Definitely add it to the survey Skinkie, It'd be interesting to know who else has experienced this behaviour.

and another one

Within the last 2 days, I have been experiencing the exact problems as the majority of people here. Thanks to those of you who have put in real effort to organize the effort to find a solution. I have gone on the website and filled out my information.

A quick summary of my situation:
12" iBook G4, purchased Sept. 2005
KP's starting 1/31/07. Works fine with Airport off.
Apple store quoted me $280 to send for repairs

Me too...

I am having the same problems:

- kernel panic on turning on airport (any network- tried at home & uni) runs fine with wired ethernet
- ibook bought aug / sept 05 (12")
- osX 10.4.8 (tried different os - no difference)
- hardware check disk showed no problems
- sudden movements starting being an issue, but now just immediate crashes on startup
- Started happening day after release of Security Update 2007-01

might be worth checking out system profile kernel extensions for airport, not sure if this will help though:

Same Airport Crash Problem

I have the same kernel panic, seems that the Jan 07 security update corresponds. I have a mid 2006 iBook 12", was fine for a year. How do I update the firmware, if that would be of any help. Or is there a way to revert from the security update?

Skinkie, do you think if the link to the survey was on each page it'd grow quicker?
Just a thought - maybe worth whacking up with big bright arrows and a sign saying: "If you've also been f***ed by the Apple corporation, click here."

It certainly appears that some of us are having the exact same issues, but that the cause was the 2007-1 update instead of the one from late 2006. I wonder if it might be a good idea to add something about that to the survey.

I too just started having this problem today. Within 45 minutes, I had 5 KPs, one of them occuring at the login screen, and two occuring after I had disabled Airport and then re-enabled it. There's no doubt I'm experiencing the same thing everyone else on this thread is. I've already filled out my information on the survey page - hopefully something can be done about it.

Oh, also, the last time I had updated was a little less than two months ago, with Security Update 2006-007. I tried using update 2007-001, but obviously, that one only touched the QuickTime exploit. iBook G4 1.33 GHz with 512 MB RAM (built-in).

Speaking very selfishly, I think it’s nice to see more and more people having the same problem.
I have been arguing extensively with Apple over this issue. The problem is that although I have a warranty that should cover anything like this within two years of buying the product, it is now up to the customer, i.e. me, to prove that the problem lies within product itself and not due to any of my wrong doing. By Apples recommendation I have taken my iBook to an Apple-authorized repair service, and they concluded that the problem was due to a faulty logic board, and that it should be covered by the warranty. I have also taken it to an independent IT engineer, who came to the same conclusion. However, Apple support tells me I need to check each component of the logic board to identify the specific component that is faulty, and my problem now is that I simply cannot find anyone in my country that are qualified for that job. I have also called Apple resellers in neighboring countries, but they have no idea where I can send my laptop for this type of investigation. And at Apple support they say they have no idea either, but that it’s my problem and not theirs. Furthermore, Apple have said that they will not cover this investigation, and speaking to the engineers who have declined to look at my iBook, going through each component of the logic board is most probably going to be very costly. Needless to say, I’m appalled by Apples behavior in dealing with this matter.

Ok I finally broke down and sent my ibook to be repaired. ($293.95) I just got it back today and it seems to be working. Before I sent it in I was experiencing kernel panics and then eventually the aircard couldn't even be found. According to the service details they replaced:

APP-631-0087 SUBASSY AP EXT/BT 11CHNL W/ APP-658-0286 KEYBORD ASSY IBOOK 14.1 APP-640-7061 PCBA MLB 1.42GHZ, 512MB, SAM APP-631-0087 AP EXT/BT 11CHNL W/

Hopefully nothing bad happens. (or if it does within 90 days....)
I will not be downloading any updates in the near future. Sheesh.

hmm, "SUBASSY AP EXT/BT" does that mean sub assembly airport extension/bluetooth?

If that's right, that means it easily fixed by Apple and no need for logic board exchange.

Maybe better odds for us on the list

Got my iBook back today from the repairers who this time replaced parts (they didn't specify what); used it for half an hour, and the error's just started again!

Well my iBook's taken a turn for the worse. Besides the usual not starting up (unless I press down on the palm rest) and the KPs this week poor Squishy started getting extra funny. Now she...

-shuts off back lighht randomly...even after PVRAM reset. Only solutions are to put her to sleep and pray she doesn't restart or restart anyway.
-Shuts off completly. In order to turn her back on you have to take off the battery and turn back on.
-Won't charge properly. The charger can be in securely and clean, but sometimes it shows no charger in.
-Shuts off random USB ports.

I just called Apple back and what they told me is this: They know there's a problem now...they're admitting it. They claim the firmware update just sent out fixes some of it, but not all. They told me to have as many people as possible call in and get the problem logged. Not that any of you don't, but if you don't have the number it is 1(800)275-2273. I'm really at my wits end you guys...I've backed up all my info and such, but I can't afford to just send her in for repairs (I'm a jobless college student) and I really reaaally need my computer for school. I'm a CIS major after all. Please guys, call in. Complain, get it noted. We need a fix ASAP.

when was there a firmware update sent out? can't find it.

it's good they're finally acknowledging the problem –*that makes me hope we just have to be a little more patient.

Hey Hairnester, I called in and reported my problem like you said. He didn't have any advice for me, just told me it sounded like a firmware issue. Of course, I am just out of warranty as well, and am a poor college student . . . EE major.
I so need for this thing to work properly. Thankfully I don't have all the problems you have yet, just my airport panic and the almost impossible boot up :-/
Your news of them admitting their problem has brought me a new hope!

I forgot exactly when but it was like last month I believe. It hasn't fixed jack for me and Squishy's only getting worse.
