I need a newsgroup reader

Hi everyone. I'm sure you will all be glad to hear that there is another mac user out there. I just bought my first mac yesterday (17" imac). Really impressed with it thus far and would like to phase out my old windoze box as quickly as possible.
My question is this: Can anyone recommend a good newsgroup reader app? I go to school online and the standard is Outlook Express for IMAP email and NNTP. I have seen a few things on Apple's website but was not really sold on any of them.
Thanks for any insight you can offer to a mac n00b.

Try this link for a list, here's another one that's getting popular as well.

I mostly get on newsgroups that are discussion oriented, not sound/picture oriented, so my needs may be different...

I use Mozilla. It takes care of both browser and newsreader (and mail if you don't like mail.app).

I used to use the mail part of it too, but I have switched to mail.app for a number of different reasons. I still use Mozilla for the other two, however.

I played with Thor (?) for a while, but didn't like it that much. Too much going on that I didn't need.

thanks for the links.

I currently use mozilla for websurfing on my M$ PCs at work so i will give that a try for newsgroup reading also.

One more question. Being a mac noob, i am very curious. I know that if I install a bunch of software on a windows box and subsequently uninstall most of it because it sucks, there are a ton of registry entries and program residue left throughout my harddrive which leads to system instability and poor performance. Will I face these same issues in OS X? I am not really even sure how an uninstall is performed in OS X yet but I'm sure i'll figure that out online today.

Thanks again for any help.

To uninstall, simply drag the application (and/or its associated folder) to the trash and empty it. Generally, residue is left in very specific places:

/Library

and ~/Library
(including ~/Library/Preferences)

The Application stuff should all be in the /Applications folder. The preferences and/or plugins will be in a folder with the appropriate label in the Library (general system and specific user) folder.
Some programs set up a folder in the users Documents folder (i.e. Microsoft Office). These are obvious.

If programs are installing things anywhere else, you should be wary of the program.

(note: "/" directory is the root or lowest level directory. "~/" is the users home directory. So, "~/Library" is the "Library" folder in the users home directory.)

What if I need an NNTP client which supports authentication? The only thing that I have had success connecting to my school server with has been Outlook Express for Mac (which is a real piece of crap).

MT-Newswatcher (free) and Thoth (shareware) both support authentication. I've used MTNW for years &&, and it's always worked for me. One thing to note -- on my G3s running 10.2, MTNW tends to gag when retreiving huge numbers of headers (1-2K and up). But if you're mainly reading discussions, it should work like a champ.

I like Hogwasher from asar.com

You can subscribe to several newsgroups and concatenate them as a single subscription. Nice sorting, powerful filtering, and you can grab the headers and select what you want to retrieve later (including offline) and then fetch them all when you're ready.

i'll check it out. I am using it for my online schooling. In Windows I was using Outlook express to connect to the University of Phoenix news server which is our online classroom. I tried Outlook Express 5 running in classic but it doesnot support sorting the messages like Outlook on Windows. If you post a reply, it just shows up at the top instead of listed under the original thread (you know, with the + signs and all).
