Choosing a backup method

...Thinking about how to do a regular daily backup.

Some options:
  1. cron job which runs a rsync script
  2. superduper with built in scheduler
  3. silverkeeper with built in scheduler
  4. applescript scheduled with iCal

opinions? Help me decide, please-- sometimes I drag my feet on making up my mind and hopefully there are some "best" ways from that list.

Also would like to have options for folder-based backups as well as HD image copies. Example on my PBG4 I'd like the whole drive, but on my wife's mini really just need the user folder (pics, music, email...)

The systems would will each have an external USB disk for backup target.

Too many choices... what do you recommend?

Thanks!

John

10.1 Re: Backup Method

John,

After years (since 1989) of using a Mac, I now use SUPERDUPER! to back-up each week. I am considering using the schedule, and doing this more often.

I have found that the incremental backups are sometimes not 100%, so each week I do a FULL BACKUP-- using 2 La Cie firewire Hard drives. So after the backup I have the info on my MacBook; then a fresh backup on LaCie-A and then a week-old backup on LaCie-B.

In addition I archive key photos and files on a DVD-- things that may no longer change, or only slightly.

Hope this helps-- I truly think SUPERDUPER! is super-- and if you ever need to just recover one file, it is so easy to find with SD!-- plus it can act as a start up disk-- even from an external FW HD.

Best of luck--

Silverkeeper works amazingly well for me at work, it will also do incremental backups so it only backs up what is new to a backup set... which makes it super quick!
