Apple Remote Desktop and VPN

I just got a copy of Apple Remote Desktop 3. I was looking to set up a network right now I have two mac books (Intel) and I'm looking into getting a server for Apple OS X server. I got apple remote desktop to work on the two mac books I have here but the question is my friend wants me to be able to help him out with is computer also a mac book in his college dorm and my girlfriends mom who lives 3000 miles away back in california. I know I can connect to computers that are on my network but not those which aren't. My thoughts would be that I need to establish a VPN to allow me to connect to the computer in california and the one in the dorm hall. I did a lot of searching and what I came up with is a lot of people saying to use VNC. My impression is that VNC is a client just like apple remote desktop and would not allow me to connect to computers that are not on my network. This is why I am also looking for a mac that isn't intel so that I can install os x server on and bypass that problem because it's my understanding that os x server has a VPN built into it. My question is how do I connect thow two other computers not on my network to be controlled by ARD with what I have right now. I wouldn't mind having a get a VPN server if the price is pretty cheap. Any advice would be great as I just switched from PC to mac within the last 3 days.

You are right that what you need is a VPN, either to the end client or from the end client, or both of you to one central point. For example I use a corporate VPN from home, and I can manage/fix any other computers connected to the VPN from their homes.

I don't know the process to set up VPN server on a Mac (I use Windows servers, very easy), but it has been discussed here a few times. Try doing a search.

You don't need a VPN if the other computer is on a Static IP, you can manually add remote IPs in to ARD... it is very likely the dorm computer is a static IP and the one in California if it is on DSL it will likely also be static..
