There's a penalty box? I didn't realize that. I was thinking of the hockey penalty box, where the other team has an advantage for a time period equivilent to the foul.

A clean hit is one that's not coming from a blind side, not trying to decapitate the opponent, not while they're down, etc.

A chop block is basically tripping, but with your upper body instead of your legs. Throwing your entire body into the players legs to stop them. I guess it's most common in American Football.

I think I'd object to anything that might lead to futbol players having to wear more protection (I mean honestly, American Football players are more like tanks than anything else).

As I recall, if you get red carded your out of the game and cannot be replaced. So it's like a very elongated penalty for hockey, if you will.

In the end I think having a penalty box would make the refs even more card happy, because they wouldn't feel that they have to worry about ruining the entire game with a bad call. That could be a disaster, people might take even more dives!

I like the idea of running the replay after the games just to catch cheaters, it seems fitting to me. A red card after the fact for a cheater is more than fair.

The penalty box is the 16.46m (18 yard) box. Within this box if a defending player commits a foul a penalty is awarded. This is a one-one one dead ball taken from the penalty spot. A red card has nothing to do with a penatly. Whats a power play, thats just stupid. American Football is also stupid, and for wimps, I don't like rugby but rugby players don't wear protective clothing and stop for a "time out" every 2 seconds so tactics can be discoussed.

It's too early for me to gauge the clarity of my post so I deleted it and will post again this afternoon.

It has been quite fun to read this extremely well informed group of individuals from the US get ALL their predictions wrong. I was born in Europe, and after all these years am still struggling with how little Americans understand football. Must be something in the water, I am confident science will find a cure someday.

Usually I live with it well, but every 4 years it becomes a bit painful, like celebrating Christmas in Saudi Arabia, although this year is a tad better, say Jordan.

So much for the predictions: gone the super-hyped (in the US) Brasilians, the Germans were completely outmatched, the Portoguese collapsed. And I am in the finals, silent and nervous because my wife is also in the finals but with the other team. Tomorrow she's going to start breakfast with firecrackers behind her chair, just to set a positive tone for the day.

Any further predictions anyone?

It's too close to call. Both teams have match winners, Zindane and Henry have proved that over the years and Totti and Del Piero too. With all the controversy in Itatian football I would like them to win, but I fear that Henry and co will have one off those games were they can do nothing wrong. They will win it and sadly over take England with 2 world titles. But i can keep telling myself that we won it first!

As for Henry I think he is a smashing player but his ego is too big. In the 2004-05 season of the Premiership Arsenal came to Norwich to play us and the team stayed at a hotel near to were I live. My Dad, His friend and his son (about 12 at the time) all belong to the golf club at the hotel. My dad's friend and his son were at the hotel standing outside with a group of people as the Arsenal Team coach arrived and Henry and a few other players refused to get off the coach until they were moved. It's people like them standing there that pay his rediculous wages and he couldn't even smile for a photo and a few autographs.

Saying American Football is for wimps is just ignorant. It's a very physical sport, where people run full speed into eachother...head first. And DO NOT go down crying and holding their forehead each time they get nudged by an opponent. That's my main beef with soccer. Is it a requirement in FIFA to roll 7-times when you get tripped? What's up with that.

IMO the worst thing about American Football is the player's behaviour off the field. Most of them emulate the hip hop thug culture and try to "keep it real" on and off the field. Also, the salary disputes are BS. These players get paid very well to play only 16 games per year. The average American Footballer's career is only 3.8 seasons. That should give you an idea of how physically demanding the sport is...hence the pads and frequent breaks.

I realize each sports has its ups and downs...that's why I watch a lot of them. Hell, I even watched my fair share of curling this winter.

They only play 60 games?? Thats an amazing fact. Most footballers (not soccer players) Play for 10+ years with 40+ games per season in England. How many seasons are there per year?

And as for diving did you notice the England players diving and rolling over?? Didn't think so, I believe we're just too honest and gentlemenly. It's mainly (mainland) european and latin american's who dive.

Yup, the American Football season is very short. 16 games in a regular season, if you make it all the way to the Super Bowl it's 20...or something like that. One season per year. There are also no club leagues, like in soccer. I think the NFL players are actually not allowed to play outside of the professional games/practices.

You're right, the English team did not flop nearly as much as Portugal or Italy. Portugal was the worst in my opinion. On the whole, honest and gentlemenly would apply...cept not for Rooney. I think that was a cheap shot. That happens in American Football a lot too, it's just not caught too often. One notorious player, Bill Romanowski, was especially rough. He once got busted for spitting in another player's face. He's the Vinnie Jones of the NFL.

OH WAIT, they're playing Germany right now. Gotta switch the chanel. I'm watching golf right now. My friends give me hell that golf isn't a sport. That's a whole nother thread

That is Fat Elvis' point. It's so physically demanding that players can't compete as long as and as often.

In other words, the majority of the teams in the World Cup.

There must be something in the water because the whole of the USA prefers several other sports before soccer? Honestly, this has to be the most ignorant and arrogant post I've ever seen on this forum.

As for predictions, every participating (and non-participating) nation has made poor predictions this year. I've read a great many reports from several sites and varying nations (note: all text was English or German), and yet I don't recall one stating that France and Italy most likely to be the final two. If you insist that Americans are uniformed, while mentioned no other nation, then, according to your statement, one can assume that most other nations are well informed about football. Show me some articles from multiple "informed" nations (dated +3 weeks prior) that predict France and Italy as most likely to make the final two.

Ignorant and arrogant? Sometimes a bit of sense of humour would help. May be you really ought to check the water for real.

Want to read something?

This reminds me of a good book I read. Amongst the Thugs. I forgot who wrote it, but it's about the hooligans. I had no idea how instense the games got in the stands.

I was reminded of how people can take stuff far too seriously. I write a post in which I speak of firecrackers, water supplies to explain baseball, and somebody takes it seriously and gets all indignant. But bravely I went ahead and did the firecracker thing anyway. It was very much appreciated by my kids, a tad less by the wife who ended up with some orange juice in her hair. So I am in the doghouse here and on the forum, but ehi! I am in the final!!!!!

This thread has been good fun.
However, it is not enriched by statements that the beloved sports of other nations are for wimps.

As for Americans not understanding football, I don’t think that’s the case – there are many who do. It’s just that there isn’t much focus beyond the Big Three: Baseball, Basketball, and what they insist on calling Football. Something in the water? I believe there was an American general portrayed in Stanley Kubrick’s wonderful film, "Doctor Strangelove", who voiced a theory about that. Anyone remember that? Fluorization of drinking water is a Communist plot!

But I do hope that a Limey can one day explain the game of Cricket to me...

Looking forward to the final in 20 minutes. I’m hoping for a French victory and would love to see Zinedine Zidane go out with another display of magic and the World Cup title.

Go France!

Oh, and thanks Arctic Stone, as always your are a calm in the storm. Surely American'sas a whole aren't as big into futbol as others. But I think posters are forgetting that the people on this forum come from their own stadnpoints, not their nations standpoints. I'm not really the typical anything. My favorites sports are these, in this order: Formula One, Baseball, Futbol, American Football, WRC and then, oddly (for someone in America), probably Cricket, then Golf. After that it just tapers off into a bunch of others. I really don't care if my tastes are American or not, they're my tastes.

As for not knowing the game, well I've only followed it a few years. That's why I ask questions and make predictions, I have this dire urge to learn. I'm more than happy that this forum is willing to teach me, and I hope it stays that way.

We're in the 84th minute, 1-1... GO FRANCE!

Zidane sees red...

.
Incomprehensible! Zidane loses his cool -- and deservedly receives a red car.
I’ll be looking for an explanation after the match. This just isn’t the Zidane I know.

Penalty kicks!? Ouch, that’s not a worthy way to settle the World Championships.

He headbutted another player. It was a shame.

ITALY WINS 5-3 ON PENALTIES.

Not what I wanted, but there's always the next Cup, right?
