I just watched the opening ceremonies for England vs. Ecuador.

Am I the only one who didn't know that Britain's God Save the Queen and the US' My Country Tis of Thee use the same tune?

I guess America has been getting it's musical inspiration from the English a lot longer than I thought.

I didn't either... Doesn't it use the same tune as "Oh Canada!" as well?

RE: England vs. Ecuador

I believe this is Ecuador's 2nd entry to the World Cup and 1st time making it to Stage 2. I know they are saying that the 90+ degree heat doesn't favour England but Ecuador is playing a fantastic game.

Beckham really shows his worth with those phenomenal free kicks shots.

We're through,
Liechtenstein Has the same national anthem Right.
Why do the american countries turn to the side with their hand on their chest when they sing the national anthom and also why didn't you get through? (i was willing them on) Your ment to be better than england they are 5th we are 10th (fifa world rankings). My favorite part of the game was when Beckham was sick.
Gary Linekar and Ian Wright wanted to see the replay but they weren't allowed. Ian Wright wasn't as funny as usual. I bet anythig that if David Pleat is commotating on tonights game his first words will be: "Yes, good everning everybody" and he'll want to see the fallbacks getting forward with good pase.
Also has anyone seen the UK TV world cup games, they have Ainsely Harriet as a punditt. He's a chef????

According to Wikipedia, Litchenstein does use the tune, though I don't know if they also use the lyrics.

I can't tell you why we put our hand over our heart, but we turn toward the flag when we sing the anthem, which, at stadium games is usually swaying on the video screen.

That was pretty good. I switched to the Spanish channel knowing they'd show that several times.

I must admit, I don't understand what you are getting at, olej24. Are you commenting on the US' enthusiasm or that the US commentators use odd terms?

Phew..... England scraped through another round!

I think olej24 is having a go at American commentary including alot of words that dont exist in the UK version of Football... but probiably exist in most US sports... I am sure British commentry is equally amusing when we try our hand at Basketball, American football or Baseball!

Huh, yeah, I didn't notice anything weird about the words that he listed. Sounds like American commentary to me :-).

I thought the reason American's put there hand on their heart is to signify devotion, you know, like this pledge is way meaningful to me. Oh yeah, I remember we used to put our hands on our chests when we would do the "Pledge of Allegence" every morning in school. That was a while ago, nobody really does that anymore.

Did anyone watch the Portugal vs Holland game?

It has to be the most violent football game I've seen in a while. 16 yellow cards (equalling the record for the most number of yellows in a world cup game) and 4 red cards (breaking the record in a wc game)!

It was brilliant to watch, unfortunately holland lost 1 - 0, and didn't get back an equaliser, even after all their attempts on goal.

Not a brilliant game for showing off the sport (downright diabolical) but its amazing how the referee let the game run amok.

yeh... nasty game!

Makes it better for us though.... loads of players on yellows, 2 reds and Louis Fego might not be playing as FIFA are investigating if he headbutted one of the Holland players!

Yep, that was not a pretty game. The emotional immaturity on the field spoiled what were actually moments of some pretty darned good football. I don’t think the referee handled it very well. Handing out cards was fine – they were all deserved, and then some; but he failed to regain control of the situation and gain respect from the players.

Portugal–England should be interesting. Rooney has shown some awesome moves, but he needs more support at the hostile end of the field. And whatever we think of Beckham’s celebrity status and ridiculous things that have been written, his golden right foot and the results speak for themselved.

Beckham has scored one of England’s six goals (an amazing kick!), and as far as I could tell, he was second-to-the last on the ball on three of the other five goals. The bottom line is: Without him England would already be out. I’m also impressed by Lampard and a few others.

However, unless England manages to rise to the occasion, I’m convinced Portugal will be the victor.

Comedian George Carlin has a wonderful take (forgive my Americanism) on the terminology of Football (American this time) compared to Baseball. Absolutely hysterical! Do listen if you come across it – I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes.

There definitely are differences between English and American. I have a good friend, an English girl who studied in the States. One day when she was taking lecture notes with a pencil and made a mistake, she asked the girl next to her: "May I borrow your rubber, please."

And if you sit before a fireplace in San Franciscio and suggest to "throw another faggot on the fire", I suspect you would be in deep s***. But, uhm, back to the topic at hand...

For some unknown reason I didn't think there was any games today. I would have liked to have seen the AUS vs. ITA. Any highlights I should look for on YouTube of Google Video?

Despite the David and Goliath presumption in Tuesday's Brazil vs. Ghana game, I'm looking forward to it as, thus far, Brazil has been playing rather poorly while Ghana has been quite brilliant for this being their first time to the World Cup.

Ghana World Cup facts:
  • Youngest average team at under 24 years of age.
  • The only African team this year to advance to Round of 16.
  • The 6th team from Africa to ever progress beyond Round of 32.
  • The only team competing in the 2006 World Cup finals to have every member of their squad playing for a different club side, with most competing from Europe's top leagues.
  • The only team whos turn-ons include long walks on the beach and candlelit dinners.
