I just don’t understand it.

Isn't Zidane one of France's best kickers, too? Isn't the guy who was subbed in for Zidane, the one Frenchy who missed?

PS: Italy beat everyone they played... except the USA.

What an unforgettable day. times world champions. Ah, bellissimo.

______

And no, Trezeguet did not sub for Zidane but for Henry. You cannot sub a player who is red-carded, you ought to play with one less player.

However, it is not enriched by statements that the beloved sports of other nations are for wimps.

If you are referring to me, I WAS KIDDING AROUND!!! Man, I wasn't serious. I love American football, I do seriously. It's like having a personal insurance that I will never never never need a sleeping pill in my life. What's not to like about that?

Ah, the joy.... magic night.

I wonder though, if Zidane could have made the difference in that shoot out... How do they select the people who go out and do that anyway? Is it predetermined by position or does the coach pick five people?

Ok, sorry for being uptight. And I myself promise not to refer to Baseball as a sport with 20 minutes worth of action jam packed into 3.5 hours.

They train for penalties, and the coach determines who kicks and the order based on the results of the training.

Seems the American team did as well as the French against the Italians. Nice knowing we held our own with the eventual world champions.

Poor wording on my part. I didn't mean subbed into the regular game play, but chosen as a kicker. Wouldn't Zidane, in all likelyhood, been chosen as one of the five kickers had he not been outed? Wasn't Trezeguet, the French kicker who missed, only chosen because Zidane was not available. In other words, Trezeguet was the 5th choice of France's "available" kickers.

No problem, I don't get upset easily...

Difficult to say, since he replaced Henry who would have - hypotetically at this point - been one of their kickers. I would have given Henry 5 minutes to recoup and shoved him right back into the game, with the penalties looming. On the other hand, Trezeguet is a good forward and I have the slight benefit of insight.

That said, I really believe the French coach should have rearranged France more offensively in the second half, when it was clear there was little left in the Italians. Maintaining that 4-2-3-1 scheme was a major mistake INMHO. Italy won the Cup because the coach made some extremely sound tactical choices (Australia after the red card, Germany, France) which proved to be impeccable.

So I read today that the insult hurled at Zidane was that he was a "dirty terrorist". Well, it's one of many choices as you read the news, but this one is of particular interest because it's being spearheaded by a group called SOS Racism. They claim the comment is racist and want the FIFA president to invoke the rules he promised he would at the beginning of the tournement. As I recall, any racist comment was to be met with expulsion of the team. I wonder if this will gain any traction, things could get awful dramatic if it did...

Jay, if this is true, I would go so far as to say that FIFA should annul the final game, and arrange a re-match for the title. Football’s future would be well served by such a decision!

Anyone else?

Serving football future? By providing a way out for hitting somebody viciously? You got to be kidding! The results would be entertaining in a sick way, football would become kick-boxing with an excuse. Out of the question, except in Internet fora apparently.

_______

The French media this morning were reporting that the insult involved the sister by the way, which without going into details it's pretty much in line with the way Italians insult on the fly. Now I understand that for a Muslim that's serious stuff, but he's a professional and that is his problem.

Lets not also forget that he has had around 16-18 red cards in his career, much more than the infamous Vinnie Jones who was seen as the badboy of English football. Zidane is no saint, even though he is a national treasure to the French. I think he should be stripped of the 'player of the tournament' award for the obvious reasons and there should be a full investigation into the incident. There is a big push to kick racism out of football by FIFA and if this was the case then they need to look at it.

He sets the example for a hell of a lot of young football players.... I wonder how many kids over the world will be practacing 'the Zidane' headbutt in sports class!

There is no excuse for Zidane’s behaviour. None!

But if Materazzi did make the comments indicated, then I think that is serious enough for FIFA to strip Italy of its World Cup Title. And that would be completely in line with FIFA’s recent policies of cracking down on racism. (Let us not forget that one of the top Italian players has been repeatedly reprimanded after giving Fascist salutes when he scores.)

Football would indeed, in my opinion, be well served by such a decision!

If so, then the only reasonable recourse would be to play a re-match, with or without Zidane & Materazzi.

But let us first find out what was actually said...

You say 'there is no excuse' but the solution you propose IS an excuse. Stripping the title is in fact the PERFECT EXCUSE for that behaviour. The message would be loud and clear for everybody, don't you see it? My feelings were so hurt, I couldn't help it, can I have the title now please?

What does calling someone a "dirty terrorist" have to do with one's race. Are not both individuals caucasian?

I hope, in my life, that science can convince the world that we are one race. That our physical differences are merely slight genetic variations brought on by selective breeding and a living organism's innate ability to adapt to ones environment.

Ummm... So let me see, the solution would be to hand the title to the Bronze winner. That would definitely go over well in Germany!
