"S" on Applications folder icon?
Can anyone tell me what the heck the deal is with that blues "S" in a white square that appears on the Applications folder icon sometimes? It's not always there, and I've seen no rhyme or reason behind when it comes and goes.

Also, please mention if you are running any software that changes your system's behavior and runs all the time. CandyBar for example.

Hi, yeah sorry didn't specify earlier. I'm running OS X 10.4.6 on a dual 2.3ghz G5.
I do have a number of things installed that may cause goofiness. That come to mind: -quicksilver -little snitch -macaroni -cocktail -weatherpop -privoxy -do-something-when ( http://www.azarhi.com/ ) -snapz pro x -norton personal firewall -workpace ( http://www.workpace.com/ ) -Data backup X ( http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_backup_info.php ) I have also just recently installed -windowshade x -jumpcut but i've seen this thing happen since long before those came on the scene. |

I can semi-rule out a few of those as apps I've used for a long time and I've never seen anything even remotely like this. The new list would be: -quicksilver -privoxy -do-something-when -norton personal firewall -workpace -Data backup X -windowshade x -jumpcut I would also suggest removing the Norton Personal Firewall. While I doubt is has anything to do with your issue, follow this equation for Symantec purchases: Norton Anything + Mac OS X = Trouble Brewing |

I can rule out WindowShade X. I would rule out Quicksilver, too, but it's a little hard to do without knowing what plugins are installed (although I would put QS in the "unlikely" column).
Are you sure it's even a system enhancement? If it's happening irregularly, maybe it's an application that's doing it? Also, your screenshot shows your sidebar. Is it just the Applications icon in the sidebar that's changing, or is it also the one you see when you oppen up your hard drive's icon? It's also interesting that the folder icon is an OS 9-style folder icon. Are you using any older apps? Anything in Classic? |

Isn't that the normal icons for OS X? I can barely remember as I CandyBar all the ones that come through my door. |

No. In fact, in the sidebar, the applications folder shouldn't even look like a folder. See: http://images.apple.com/macosx/featu...ts20050412.jpg

No, I'll confirm that that is the OS 9 style folder icon.
The Applications folder looks like this in the sidebar, with no folder at all: ![]() The folder itself usually looks like this: ![]() Trevor

Which brings up a question that still hasn't been asked of UniAce:
UniAce, have you perhaps posted a custom icon on the Applications folder? That would explain the odd icon. Trevor

Hi all,
I haven't put a custom icon on the Applications folder, but I just tred deleting the icon on it and it reverted to the appropriate default (which it has had before). This is weird. I wonder how this strange icon magically appeared there. Well, it's gone now. I'll post again if it appears once more and I have any clue what might have triggered it. |
