Play sound without gui app?
I'm wondering if there is a way to open/play an audio file without a GUI application (iTunes, Quicktime, etc.). I'm wanting to open the file from the command line or a shell script.

Thanks, that might work. I was hoping for something built into the OS.

What kind of file? The finder can play most sounds. Set to column view and have preview on. It's actually Quicktime but it doesn't open the player, plays right in the finder.

Any audio file. I don't want to use the Finder, or any other application. It's for a series of audible alerts that get played over the PA at work (break time, lunch time, etc.). I'll use crontab or launchd then to schedule them.
Aside from this project, I have been wondering how to add audio playback to a shell script anyway. Pink's link to play will do what I need. |

It looks like Play would be better for ArtemisG3, but I'll point this out as well: Play Sound
