It's very frustrating. But ever since I upped from 10.4.3 to 10.4.4 on my G5 iMac my custom icons don't last.
I add the icon via the Get Info window and it works. Then either after a few minutes, 2 days, a restart or opening the customed doc... the icon reverts to its old default. I have reinstalled the OS + upgrade. But I probably lose at least 3 custom icons a day! What is wrong, please? |

What system hacks are you running on your computer?
Have you repaired your permissions recently? Is there anything unusual that you are aware of on your computer regarding ownership or permissions? Trevor |

The default for saving screen captures is changed from the desktop to a folder in Documents, I use double scroll arrows at both ends of the scroll bars. I use the latest Transparent Dock and DragThing (both updated specfically for 10.4.4). Déja Vu backs up my files. I use a Logitech keyboard and mouse and the accompanying Control Center engine. Two mouse button zoom in and out for me. That's about it.
I use PseudoAnacron to direct the regular maintenance that gets missed when my computer is off. I'm thinking it might not do that but I've reinstalled the OS from disk 3 times this week and that should have taken care of it.
I'm the only user so I log in automatically under my usual admin account, and I have an emergency and trouble shooting user account that I keep as a stand by. My method of making custom icons with a transparent background is roundabout ('cause that's hard to do in OSX) but even icons I download and ones I make with just solid backgrounds disappear too. I hope that's the kind of info you were after, Trevor. Thanks |

Hmmm. Nothing obvious leaps out, unfortunately. Does the disappearance happen after Déja Vu backs up?
Custom icons are stored in a file named exactly Icon which has it's invisibility flag set. These files are in the same directory as the item with the custom icon. (The only custom icon with a different name is a custom icon put on a drive volume.) If something happens during backup that deletes invisible files, perhaps that is why your custom icons are disappearing. Trevor |

Not exclusively. The most common time is after a restart. About half my restarts could be suspect if that's what is going on. But like today, I put up a new icon this morning (after the deja vu backup) and this afternoon it was gone, with no intervening restart. Sometimes it takes only minutes to lose the custom icon. More often it is 10 to 20 hours or after a restart. I think this did not happen in 10.4.3. Deja Vu has only been used since 10.4.4. I do have a program that scans for icons on my HD (Pixadex) and copies them to a file but that probably is not it because I haven't rescanned in a couple of days and it is of course happening anyway. |

What filesystem is your hard drive formatted in? Are you using anything unusual, like that new HFS-case sensitive format? If you don't know, you can find out using Disk Utility > click the volume name on the left, and check down at the bottom under "Format".

Don't see "Format" explicitly. Do you mean Paertition type?

No, I meant Format. Please see the attached image. However, the information given above is another way to answer the question, and it appears that you haven't chosen the case-sensitive HFS.

Can you show us your logs? They are easily viewed using your Console app, in /Application/Utilities.

Just noticed while pasting all this: lost another one. I've been doing a lot of drawing intensive work in Excel. That has messed with my Excel frameworks file before (about 6 times). I either have to replace it with a pre-made backup or eventually reinstall Excel.
Since it's a graphics thing/glitch, I thought I had better mention it. Sorry I only remembered it now. |

Wow. You seem to be having problems with Stuffit Expander (it crashed twice), LOTS of problems with Google Earth (most of your log is related to Google Earth), and it looks like you tried to mount a disk image and it failed. There's some problems with Quicktime, too. But nothing that I can glean about deleting icons.

Ouch, lots of issues. Stuffit has been strange since the beginning, i.e. right out of the box. I often will get an error in a download and the workaround has been to go to the downloaded file, duplicate it before clicking ok on the error message, and then the original file self-deletes (or Stuffit, rather), but the duplication is always just fine. I was going to get around to persueing this problem in a forum; it's happening now less than it used to. The disk images failures are always during the end of the unstuffit process. They ALWAYS mount fine when I go back and double click the .dmg manually. I guess I should reinstall Stuffit, huh?
That's actually funny. I used to have GE installed but removed;I dislike GE because the resolution is so weak and the maps are more than 5 years out of date, exactly like the Google Maps data. i, just for last night, reinstalled GE to supplement the GIS data looking at a small town in Maine. But I didn't know it was buggy too.
QT was just updated too via their website. What's going on? Should I be having this many problems with mainstream downloaded apps? And Stuffit comes from the OS install disk. Do you think these are symptoms of a wider problem? Maybe I got a flakey unit. Or maybe it's just bad luck. |

No. You should try the standard troubleshooting suggestions: http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/ (see the "My Mac needs help" section) http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...04011205473937 http://forums.osxfaq.com/viewtopic.php?t=7269 http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html In particular, be sure to do "Repair Disk" (different from "Repair Disk Permissions"!) in Disk Utility when booted from the Install CD/DVD. I.e. you restart from the Install CD/DVD, then run the version of Disk Utility that is available from one of the menus there. See this Apple doc: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214

My disk needed no repairs, my Disk Permissions needed repairs. I think not all the repairs worked though: "user should be 0, user is 501...."
I'll add my saved installer log after two questions, well three. 1- What will I lose if I clean system and user caches? 2- What settings will be lost if I reset the pram? 3- Will I lose anything if I reinstall the firmware? Thanks. 1. Nothing of importance. Some cache files you don't need. 2. Nothing of importance. In some limited cases your time might be reset. You might lose the time zone that you are in. 3. You can't reinstall the firmware. If you reset the Open Firmware variables, you will lost nothing of importance. Trevor |

It is best NOT to run Repair Permissions while booted to your Install CD/DVD unless you are in an emergency situation. Repair Permissions is best run while booted from the hard drive itself. I'd advise you to re-run Repair Permissions while booted from your hard drive to clean up several of the outdated permissions that your Install CD has now set incorrectly. Trevor |

If you continue to have a problem with this, you might just take one example custom icon as a test case, identify what "Icon" file is associated with that example, and then run my 'watchfile' script to see when the "Icon" file changes. Then maybe you could correlate the change to something you are doing.
You could add extra lines in the script to make it notify you when the change happens. E.g. to make a beep: print "\a";
