Re: Mac OS 10.2: Evaluations
I've been on 10.2 for a few days now, and I keep finding new stuff I didn't know about before. Cool stuff, like the "save as PDF" button in the print dialog (saving me a couple of steps (preview, then save after acrobat reader launches)), and all sorts of other stuff.
www.mikey-san.net/jaguar/ I've been snapping shots of the neat stuff I've seen, most of which has been exposed on Think Secret, but can now be checked out by users everywhere. The only gripe I have--sorry--is what's happened to Entourage and OmniWeb. Entourage has become much slower in several respects, ditto OmniWeb. I also discovered an AppleScript bug either related to AppleScript 1.9, Carbon, or BBEdit. Dunno what's going on, but it's bothersome, and I've yet to find a workaround for it. A few other things, too, involving emptying the trash, but nothing super-super-super major. But I'm still not upset that I upgraded. Three words: The new Calculator.app. Yes, this is worth $129. (Though, I got an educational discount! ;-)) -/- Mikey-San Last edited by Mikey-San; 08-24-2002 at 05:14 PM. |

The ISO 9660 (hybrid) format does not work in Jaguar (it did in 10.1) when burning CDs. This means that CDs won't work with PCs anymore, only Macs (unless you use Toast).
For this reason I have given Jaguar a low score. Last edited by peepster; 08-24-2002 at 09:14 PM. |

yeah, toast. another great roxio (nee adaptec) product. i stopped using creator in Windows years ago because i was getting more coasters than CDs - and Toast gave me two more today. Disk Copy burnt to the same external burner without incident immediately afterwards.
besides Disk Copy and Toast, are there any other burning apps? (should i start a new thread?) |

A thread on CD burning software and options is a good idea. We don't have anything like that on this forum. Let's keep this thread focused on general evaluations of Jaguar.
Sorry to hear about that ISO 9660 problem, peepster. I wonder if that's turning up everywhere. That's a biggie! |

That is part of pre-Jag...you never found it before? You pick "Output Options" in a print dialog box and click "Save as file", easy as pie, no Acrobat needed.

Pretty impressive.
Time will tell - but one of the things I look for in a system upgrade is the lack of interface changes; that way I'm not spending my time learning new ways to accomplish the same old tasks.
Of course, with OS X everything is new, but still... Anyway, I'm enjoying the speedboost - but there are a lot of little changes that seem to be enhancements (tweaks?) rather than just changes for the hell of it. For example: Have you noticed the new "split window" widget in Terminal Windows? It'll give you a horizontally split view of your terminal session - very handy when you need to look at a really long list, or you'd like to look at a past command without scrolling back and forth and back and forth. That's the kind of little thing I can appreciate - it's there, but it's not keeping me from working the way I'm used to! |

But yet, that's the same issue resolved by the single button: extra steps. So, what was your point again? -/- Mikey-San |

I've been enjoying jaguar quite a bit. I had some major install problems though. I can't really blame apple though, because i'm using a beige G3 thats been upgraded beyond its official capacity in memory (up to 768mb, which works fine, but wasn't part of the original spec), and in processor (up to a G4/466). I had to remove the G4 and go back to the original processor in order to get the install to work. I can't fully explain why that is, because I know of several other people with similar configurations who had no problems..
But now that its installed, my Wacom tablet still isn't working, but everything else is! I love the new calculator app, its nice! ichat is fun too, i got some good 'chattin' in the other night with my buddy in california, we had installed jaguar on the same night. the new mail.app is great too. I like the bit of extra polish it has. Junk filtering works too. I'm still 'training' it though. The speed bump is nice, though I can't speak for quartz extreme, because I can't use it ![]() Peace, phidauex |

Well, so far I think Jaguar looks exactly like 10.1.5. I can't find the iChat app, the calculator looks the same...
Oh, wait! That's because I am still running on 10.1.5. Silly me. I'll upgrade when I have the spare cash lying around... |

Yes nosaj, I DID see that on the front page
however, it didn't work for me. ![]() My problems with the tablet are very strange. I did a clean install of Jaguar, moved my preferences folders back in. Then reinstalled the latest Wacom drivers. I was able to use ink for about 5 minutes when I had a crash, then things got very unstable. I blamed it on my moving a bunch of preferences folders in from my backups, which messed up permissions. So I ran the repair permissions utility from the boot disk. It found LOTS of problems, and fixed them. Then, the wacom quit working. Uninstall and reinstall the drivers, no go. I spent about 3 hours on it the other day. I think there is something wrong with my Jaguar installation. I might just end up reinstalling it. I hope people are enjoying ink with their wacoms :'( maybe soon i'll be in the land of handwriting recognition too. peace, phidauex |

Re: Mac OS 10.2: Evaluations
I've got things up and going on my Pismo (500/640/20), which has only an 8 mb graphics card, and on my iMac (500/320/20), which has the minimal 16 mb requirement for Quartz Extreme.
Overall, speed is better, even on the Pismo. Apps that used to open in four or five bounces open in two or three; apps that opened in two now open in one. The Finder is a lot smoother and updates more quickly, as many have noted. I'm not a chatter and don't use Mail.app, so I haven't benefited much from those new additions. Address Book IS really nice, but what do I do with it since I use Eudora? I'm still exploring, and have noticed some of the niceties like the new CD/DVD Sytem Pref. and the options for adjusting anti-aliasing in General Controls. Also, it's nice to finally have options in Energy Savings for battery usage in the Pismo. Where are the options to schedule sleep and restarts? In due time, I guess. 10.2 broke Via Voice completely; microphone is not recognized. It also broke my scanner connection in Omni Page Pro X, but there are work-arounds to that one. All in all, this upgrade seems as substantive of any full-pay upgrade I can recall during the past decade or so. |

I'd like to change my vote to 5 stars. Over the last few weeks I've found the update to be exceptional for overall improvements in the OS, having just discovered the stateful nature of the firewall and it's configuration/Finder improvements and Junk Mail filtering is really working well.
Speed wise, this upgrade is really showing it's true colours. I'm starting to be very impressed, even on a non-QE TiBook the speed improvement is remarkable. I've solved my iMac memory issue and now the thing flies. I have a feeling that I'll discover even more improvements in the next few weeks. Wonderful. |

speed....but, yet..poor Fink!
It is worth it if only for the increased speed on my poor little iBook, but yet, I do not appreciate the virtual destruction of the finkie thingies. I mean, the burden that Jobby placed on Fink by not warning of the principle changes that would break the easy use of Fink. Other than that. It's a hell of a lot better than Windows or RedHat!
