safari plug-in's
Here's the software I have:
Mac OS X 10.4.3 Safari 2.0.2 When I click a hyperlink in Safari, for example: Movie Safari begins to download the movie.avi. How do I "tell" Safari to launch a 3rd party application, such as VLC (VideoLan Client), when I click on a *.AVI file? Any help will greatly appreciated. Benjamin |

There are two things involved here.
First off, the web server tells Safari what type of file it is by means of the "MIME type" transmitted as part of the HTTP message. If Safari doesn't recognize the type of file, it assumes the file is to be downloaded. You can configure what Safari does with different types of files by using the 3rd-party preference pane "RCDefaultApp" (http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/) |

I downloaded and installed RCDefaultApp, then under "MIME Types" for "video/avi" I set the default application to VLC. I tried it out and it works! Now in Safari when I click on the "Movie" hyperlink it first downloades the AVI file completely THEN launches VLC to play it.
What I really wanted has for Safari to launch VLC with the URL of the hyperlink. This way I can start to watching the video as its downloading. This is what Safari does for QuickTime movies. Any ideas how to accomplish that? Benjamin |

Here's the software I have:
Mac OS X 10.4.3 Safari 2.0.2 QuickTime Player 7.0.3 When I click a hyperlink in Safari, for example: Movie Safari immediately begins playing the Movie in the browser window, using QuickTime, as the Movie is being downloaded. How do I configure either Safari or QuickTime to LAUNCH a new QuickTime player window instead of playing the movie in the Safari window? Any help will greatly appreciated. Benjamin |

I merged your new thread with your previous one since the answer is the same - configure it using the RCDefaultApp preference panel.

I think the movies have to be specially prepared to allow this. I.e. I don't think it works with all movies. |

First Post re: Safari Plug-in
RCDefaultApp does NOT "launch" the VLC application when I click on an AVI file. It tells Safari to open VLC once the AVI file is completely downloaded. My question here is how do I get Safari to launch the VLC application with the URL to the hyperlink immediately? Second Post re: Launch QuickTime player from hyperlink in Safari My question is similar in how do I get Safari to launch a seperate QuickTime player window when I click on a QuickTime media file? Because right now it will only play in the Safari window. I'm looking for information on how to get Safari to launch a 3rd party application immediately after I click on a hyperlink. Similar to the way Safari immediately begins to play QuickTime media in the browser window. Thanks Benjamin |

What I'm looking for is a "user" solution to allow me to LAUNCH QuickTime player and VLC IMMEDIATLEY when I click on a hyperlink to a file that is assocaited with those applications (via RCDefaultApp or QuickTime Preferences). Some possible solutions that come to mind include: - AppleScript - "personal" style sheets (Safari -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Style Sheet) Has anyone tried this before? Or could someone point me to a link or document with further information about how I could accomplish this? Thanks Benjamin |
