File Sharing
In pre-OSX days, file sharing meant you could select a volume or folder on a volume and specify it to be shared and which users could connect via Appletalk.
Now in OSX it's not obvious how to do the same. The Users setup is for Login, not file sharing. Is the only way to share files is to use the Public or Shared folders in the Users directory? Or is it possible to arbitrarily specify folders or even a whole disk as shared to specific users IF they Connect to it with the allowed user name and password? |

You are basically correct. However, using NetInfo Manager, it's possible to share anything as you did in OS 9. But NetInfo Manager is quite intimidating and you can somewhat easily destroy your machine while using it. Not a Good Thing when compared to the ease of file sharing in OS 9!
Luckily, there's SharePoints, which makes it nearly as easy to create a share in OS X as it was in OS 9. This slick piece of donation-ware lets you specify the folder you wish to share and the permissions for that share, along with a number of other settings. Well worth a download and a donation! -rob. |
