id
df
ls -ld /
ls -Oled /
ls -Oled /Volumes

1) You forgot to press Return after the last command, so we don't see the result of:
ls -Oled /Volumes

2) Your disk "MR.H.Drive" doesn't seem to be there at all.

Let's try again, more slowly. Please read and follow these instructions precisely.
First, plug in the MR.H.Drive

Then open a new Terminal window and and copy & paste the following commands (all together) into that Terminal window, then press Return, then copy & paste the results back here so we can see:

id
df
ls -ld /
ls -Oled /
ls -Oled /Volumes
echo "done"

As soon as i copy and paste your commands, it carries them out. It won't give me a chance to press return at all???? I'll keep trying though until i get your response. Everything is definitely plugged in now..

It definitely won't let me press return.. I've even tried typing in single bits on their own so i could press return after.. This is what i got:

ls -Oled /

unknown001d4fffa44e:~ jamesearp$ ls -Oled /
drwxrwxrwx+ 31 root admin - 1122 3 Jan 20:17 /
0: user:jamesearp allow list,add_file,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity
unknown001d4fffa44e:~ jamesearp$

ls -Oled /Volumes

unknown001d4fffa44e:~ jamesearp$ ls -Oled /Volumes
drwxrwxrwt@ 6 root admin hidden 204 4 Jan 15:16 /Volumes
unknown001d4fffa44e:~ jamesearp$

Hope that helps..

Sorry, just to clarify: Terminal won't let me press return after i copy and paste the commands into it. It immediately carries out the actions.

I typed in the 2 commands above, separately and in new terminal windows. Because i typed them, terminal let me press return and the info above is what i got back.

Everything seems okay so far.
So let's proceed to run the following command:

ls -Ole /Volumes

The above shows that the 'uchg' flag has been set on those drives.
I think you usually can uncheck the "locked" checkbox in Get Info to remove this.
But if that isn't working for some reason, you can remove it with the following commands:

chflags nouchg "/Volumes/MR.H.Drive"
chflags nouchg "/Volumes/MR.LACIE"

Apple and numerous others were unable to help and you really came through. You help so many people on here.. Please let me know how i can make a donation to you. I'm not rich unfortunately but i'll give what i can.

Many, many thanks again,

Hey everyone. I'll get right to the point...I accidentally screwed up my permissions on my external drive (250GB Rocstor). I posted the sudo chown root /Volumes/Name command in Terminal. Terminal then prompts me for my password. After I type it in I get chown: /Volumes/Green: Operation not permitted
I am a working professional in music and I need this drive. Help!!!

Hayne, hi
I read through this forum that google 'sent' me to. Not much here relating directly to my problem (unmountable... External HDD), although the Unix talk make me think, could i format my external through Terminal, as DU cannot erase, repair, mount, etc. my FAT32 formatted G-tech. This is my last hope, as windows can semi-read it but also cannot access it at all. I managed to backup important data, so now my goal is formatting (i started formatting on XP but it crashed the system)
DU, when it decides to detect my XMDRIVE, gives this message

Verify and Repair disk “XMDRIVE”
** /dev/disk2s1
** Phase 1 - Read FAT
** Phase 2 - Check Cluster Chains
** Phase 3 - Checking Directories
Unable to read directory (Input/output error)
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 non HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error

I fear this may be a hardware issue, but I am trying hard to avoid buying another external (these things are too pricey here in South Africa).

Regards
Matt

To restore the usual permissions on the top-level folder of that external drive,
run the following command (in a Terminal window) - best to copy & paste it to make sure to get it right:

sudo chmod ugo+rw "/Volumes/JONA EXTERN"

That sort of error message often indicates a hardware problem with the drive.
But first try fixing the permissions (as above) and then see if you can access the drive in Disk Utility.
I'd recommend making a backup of the files on that drive as soon as you can access them.

well, I tried the command...now DU doesn't see the partition anymore...only the drive, so I can't access the darn thing.

I tried to use disk warrior but as it is a fat32 drive...

So I tried to recover the data with ontrack recovery pro, and it finds only 140 gb of the 240 gb of data, any sugestions?

Thanks again!

Dear Hayne,

i have a Lacie 500g external drive and recently i have set the permission to no read and write to block other users from accessing it, apparently i have blocked myself and the harddrive icon doesn't show up anymore. But the partion (Lacie 1) i made subsequently did show up on my desktop. I took it to a computer store, they said the files are still intacted but they too can not retrieve them. I ran Disk Utility and disk repair and everything came back "ok". I took it to Lacie repair center, they said the drive seems to be in working order, but they do not provide data recovery service. I really need you help on this....would very much appreciate your advise.

i ran the following command:

id
ls -l /Volumes
echo "done"

and get:
