Networked Canon iR 3200 Printer Error
Have a networked Canon printer that has been printing fine until last week.
The Boss' PB has now started to get an error in the printer status window that says, "Remote host did not accept control file (54)" anytime he tries to print. I have tried everything from reinstalling the drivers to repairing permissions and deleting/remaking the profile. None of this has worked. The printer has worked with all other networked computers and even a few that I tried from outside (like my home computer), but none have returned the same error. Any ideas? Thanks, Steve |

Re: OS10.3 & Canon IR3200
Hi,
We had one G5 which had problems with our Canon IR3200. Before anything eles, power off the printer, wait a minute and power on. Then try- 1- Manually remove the PPDs and delete the printer in Printer Utility. Restart. 2- Make sure that the current POSTSCRIPT driver for OS10.3 is used. Download it from the Canon site. It will have PS in its name. Install and restart. Repair privilages. 3- Use IP printing in the Add printer menu- It can use other methods which can cause problems. When adding the printer make sure the driver name is listed as "iR C3200 CanonPS" and NOT "Canon iR C3200" 4- Download "Yasu" from Versiontracker.com and run it. 5- Make a new account and try 1-4 again. Hope this helps. Good luck! Regards, Nick |

This driver seems to give the fewest problems:
http://canonusa.com/cgi-bin/agree.pl...v_OSX_1.20.hqx NOTE: this is not the latest driver - but it does not include the cruft that is necessary for the pre-cups versions of Mac OS X. NOTE 2: I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH THIS DRIVER ON MAC OS X.4+!!! Delete any other Canon drivers before running. I've found it's also helpful to run: http://www.fixamac.net/software/psr/index.html Hugh

Thanks will try it. I have reinstalling the Canon Drivers but have not started by turning off the printer and starting that way. Will let you know.
Thanks for the reply Hugh. I have tried Printer Setup Repair before, but it didnot help in this instance. Were you getting the same type of error code as I am getting? Thanks, Steve |

Re-named printer?
Hi,
When the the iR C3200 is first added in the print center, it has its name set as the IP address. According to Canon, if it is re-named before a print job is sent, there will be problems. Send a test print before re-naming the printer in Print center. Not sure if this will help in your case, but it may help someone else searching for info on the C3200. Regards, Nick |

"When the the iR C3200 is first added in the print center, it has its name set as the IP address. According to Canon, if it is re-named before a print job is sent, there will be problems." - from Macsolver
Good catch - but this only applies to the fax printer. Steve, Which version of OSX is your boss running? Did you try the driver that I linked to? Are you connecting via Appletalk, Windows Printing, LPR/LPD (port 515), or via an external print server? Does your printer include the FIERY server? Hugh

Hugh,
He's running 10.3.9. I haven't had a chance to try the driver you linked me to , although I did download it and am waiting till he gets back from a business trip to work on his machine. I am currently connecting all machines to the printer via LPR/LPD and using the IP address of the Canon to print to it. I am not familiar with the FIERY server you asked about. Steve |

The Fiery is a high priced add-on to that Canon model. It dramatically speeds up printing of difficult jobs and requires it's own driver.
Try the driver I pointed you too. I've had much more success with that version vs. the newer ones that don't require CUPS. Please make sure you uninstall all pieces of the other Canon driver before you install it. Print Center Repair can be very helpful in resetting CUPS after the uninstall. One other note - it seems to me the error you're getting comes from adding the the printer to Print Setup Utility using the device named Canon Mac PS Printer via the advanced options. Add the printer via IP Printing, Printer Type: LPD/LPR, Printer Address: IP Address or FQDN, leave the queue blank. If all is running well you'll find a nice little utility that can be summoned from Printer Setup Utility or from File:Print. Last - the printer runs much better if you max out the RAM. You really need a minimum of 768MB if you don't have an external server. More is better. Hugh

NOTE:
http://canonusa.com/cgi-bin/agree.pl..._installer.hqx The newer (released in July) driver referenced above is CUPS only and should work from 10.2 - 10.4. I have not tried it but it looks like the one I linked you too with some bug fixes and feature additions. It also comes with a good instruction PDF. Hugh

Hugh,
No joy on the new drivers. I did everything that you suggested and have gotten no where with it. I was able to determine that there is a Queue name problem because of the fact that I can see the printer on the network and interface with it, but just can't print to it. Steve |

Hugh,
I think I have solved the problem. First, I used Desinstaller to uninstall the Canon printer install package and then using Pacifist I reinstalled the Canon printer package and found that there were about 3 parts of the package that were not there before. I then verified the install and then retried to print to the Canon Printer. Success!! However, I was dealt a blow when I took the PB back to the Boss' office plugged it into the network and tried it from there. I received the same error code and no print. What the....? I then realized that the other half of the problem was a defective ethernet cord. The cord was too short and over time had been "stretched" to fit and had become ineffective enough that he could have internet/LAN connections, but when data was sent to the printer there was a problem. The reason I could print the first time was that I was connected wirelessly to the network. All tests afterward were met with success. Thanks for your help, Steve Krug |

The same problem...
Steve,
I'm in the exact same boat you were in not too long ago, and am wondering if you can pass any knowledge my way. Here's wheer I'm at: Have two G5's, one G4 on a windows network. One of the G5's works fine printing via IP Printing, the other (mine of course), decided to stop working when I came back from vacation (really, I can't make stuff up this good) - it also refuses to print via Aplle Talk, though I get a different error code. The G4 only works printing via Apple Talk. The G4 and my G5 get the same error code when trying to print via IP (error 54), but the other G5 works fine. Urgh. Canon tells me it's a CUPS issue on my computer, effectively wiping their hands of the situation, as has my tech team in the office. That's what I get for being a mac user in a sea of windows boxes... I've used Print Center Repair, repaired permissions, added deleted and re-added the drivers, but no luck. I think that I have the same setup as you do: irC3200 with the fiery controller. The PPD I'm using is called: Canon iR C3200-C1 PS Ver1.0. Can you tell me what drivers you used, what were the extrea 'parts' you found using pacifist to crack it open, and any other info that may be of help? I appreciate any guidance you may be able to send my way... Thanks, Ken |
