Tiger instalation problem
I'm trying to install Tiger on my G4 eMac (384 mb RAM) After choosing the language, instalation destination, and quick install, it starts installing. The problem is that it says an error has occured during instalation about .75% through. It never gets past Verifying destination volume. I have over 20gb free on the hard drive so i know that is not the problem. It also doesn't mention needing more firmware or anything. Does anyone know what's going on?

There is a possibility that the problem is with the existing filesystem on your hard disk. Before trying to install Tiger, check the disk using the version of Disk Utility that is on the install DVD.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 What version of OS X do you have on your eMac currently? Is the Tiger DVD one that you bought through retail? What type of install are you doing? (upgrade, archive & install, erase & install? I think the default is "upgrade"). |

The disk utility found a problem on the hd but couldn't repair it. (the install DVD is fine) I don't know whether that means to upgrade from 10.3.9, I need to restore the hd somehow or what. Does anyone know if this can be done without some serious work on the hd?

What's the exact problem that Disk Utility reported? An overlapped extent? If so, see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25770
A utility called DiskWarrior is the champion of fixing problems like this. If none of the methods the article suggests work for you, DW is worth the $89 or whatever it costs. |

In order for anyone on this forum to offer advice more specific than "get DiskWarrior" we'd need to have the exact error message.

After checking HFS Plus volume, extents overflow file etc, it pauses for a long time after checking volume information, then attempts to repair a volume but can't because of error. the error is The underlying task reported failure upon exit. Is this something that can only be fixed with something like disk warrior?

Yeah, DW is your best bet at this point. I've seen it really save people's @$$es so it's a good thing to have around anyway.

I tried repairing the drive while booted on my panther cd and it said that it repaired the problem. But when I popped the Tiger DVD in the same problem was there. Would it be possible to install Tiger on my firewire external hd and transfer it over easily? I'd rather not get DW unless it was the last option. To erase or restore the eMac, what all would i need to copy onto the external? Just the Macintosh HD icon?

Why not just backup to the external drive and do a fresh install of Tiger? Let it reformat the drive.
Or am I missing something? Paul |
