Autosleep problem resurected
My former autosleep problem that began (i think) in Tiger strangly went away for the past month or so and I forgot all about it. However, I never fully trusted it. I upgraded my iMac G5 to 10.4.2 and it was about the last thing I expected to have broken. Like I said I used to have an autosleep problem so extensive even fresh users couldn't automatically go to sleep. After searching my system.log I pinpointed this phrase to be occouring every autosleep attempt
Code:
Jul 14 09:19:51 QuetZalCoatL kernel[0]: AppleSMU_TimeZoneSetting Jul 14 09:19:51 QuetZalCoatL kernel[0]: AppleSMU::setLEDdimmOffset(-4 hrs offset from GMT) to rise at 12 hrs GMT and set at 00 hrs GMT to 24 pct LED brightness with 35 min transitions. Jul 14 09:19:51 QuetZalCoatL kernel[0]: AppleSMU::setLEDdimmOffset PMU version needs to be 79 or greater to send command - command not sent I will list what I have tried so far this morning: 1) Erased Library>Preferences>com.apple.PowerManagement.plist 2) Erased Library>Preferences>com.apple.Autowake.plist 3) Erased Users>xlax999999>Library>Preferences>com.applesystemuiserver.plist 4) Restarted 5) Held Apple-Option-OF 6) Typed reset-nvram Return 7) Typed reset-all Return All my Hardware is stock as is most of the software, No periphials other than keyboard and mouse and occasionally an iPod, though I unplug it when testing this. I found this from Apple and got really excited hoping it would fix my problem for good:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733 Alas! I get the same error. I am out of ideas I can't find any other mention of PMU version and how I could "upgrade" it to higher than 79 if that is even possible. Someone please enlighten me. Oh, I failed to mention that my Manual Sleep works like a dream. |

mee too
I have the exact same problem. imac 800 mhz flat panel. I've diconnected all perifrial devices including the mouse and keyboard, disabled the airport connection, turned off all the startup items except ical, and erased the same preferences you did. It will not go to sleep automatically but will sleep by manually. The screen does go black.
I don't get any messages in the console or log saying something is trying to sleep or something is stopping it from sleeping. The only thing I have installed that I consider an slighlty aggressive application is the HP all-in-one tool. But I don't think that is it. Last edited by sox; 09-11-2005 at 09:17 PM. |

Set your timer for sleep for Ten minutes (or whatever) then walk away from your computer and let it sit for 11 minutes or so then check your last entry into your system.log. That is what we are looking for, not what happens on a reboot. Also, Try making a new user and see if it still doesn't work. BTW mine started working again
.You might want to erase your IP address out of that post, it appears a couple of times Last edited by xlax999999; 09-11-2005 at 07:57 PM. |

xlax, thank for your reply. As I mentioned "I don't get an messages in the console or system logs" that it is even trying to go to sleep.
Since I posted I changed a billion other settings and Now it's sleeping just fine. I can't say which one actually did it since it just started doing it after several reboots. One thing I removed was the "share the airport with other computers". But that by itself did not fix it. Given the deferred way it recovered. I'm sort of suspecting it was some combination of preferences and Nvram settings. Deleting the prefs did not immediately fix the problem. But I suspect that the problem got fixed when the prefs gor recreated later. That could have been induced by the reboots or by me changing settings will nilly. So I guess the rule is. First delete all those prefs. Zap the nvram and pram. then reboot. Change all your prefs to something else. reboot. Also one thing that sort of made things a tad confusing is that even if you set the sleep time for 1 minute of no activity, it does not go to sleep for few minutes after the screen goes dark. So each test needs to be at least 3 or 4 minutes. |

After a long departure I am back, hi everybody...
The Autosleep problem went away for 10 months or so but it has now resurrected with a vengence. In addition to the autosleep not working at all (just shuts down the display not the hard drive), when I manually go to sleep the computer shuts down. I need help. Thanks. |
