Any idea ?

I also struggled with this for hours! What worked for me was the following:

- Moved "Deskjet" and "Designjet" folders (out of /Library/Printers/hp/) to the desktop

I went back to add a printer, and this time, the 1020 driver came right up!

Hello,

I'm new to this forum, and I joined specifically for this issue! Lol. I have a Mac Mini running 10.4.9, and I have a Windows XP Pro machine. My HP LaserJet 1020 is connected to the Windows machine, and I am trying to print from my Mac. I've tried 2 options, and get almost done, and something goes wrong on each one...

Scenario 1...

I followed the guide from http://iharder.sourceforge.net/macosx/winmacprinter/ perfectly, and everything is set up on the Windows computer. Whenever I use the Mac to connect to it, I enter the IP, find the computer/printer, and whenever I print, it says "Network host (IP address) is busy; will retry in 30 seconds...." and it is a continuous loop of nothingness...

Scenario 2...
I can find the HP1020 on my XP machine, and I can connect to it. I hit Print and it tells me that the job is completed. YAY, right? No! Whenever I go to the XP computer, it tells me that there is 1 document pending for the printer, but nothing ever comes out. I try to delete/cancel the print job, and it says "deleting" forever... So I have to restart the XP computer every time.

I've downloaded the drivers, installed them 1203985710 times, and my Mac cannot find them in the drop down menu. So I end up using Generic PostScript Printer. I don't know what else to do!

Thanks,
-B

That worked great. None of the other fixes were working. Thanks for the heads up.

Thank you!

Thank you so much for all of these comments. I had not purchased a printer in years, but my Epson C82 has started having the same hose problem that most of its kind has after a while. In all this time with the Epson, I had completely forgotten that some printers don't work with Macs. The 1020 came and I tore open the box only to be disappointed. After reading through all your postings and grabbing the old version of the driver, however, I'm all set.

I did run into some trouble initially so I would remind anyone else doing it to make sure it's the old file from narc.ca's page and that the other versions are all uninstalled.

And I would urge those who have not torn open their boxes to support companies that provide better support to Mac and Linux users.

My workplace (PC's) offered me a bunch of laser cartridges from their HP printers since they switched to something else. I have a lifetime of cartridges. I looked for a printer to fit the cartridges and found the HP 1020. Well, also the 1018 and after reading that thread thank God I bought the 1020, that's faint praise. A $99 sale and I thought I was all set. I've used HP inkjets on the Mac for years and have ignored the Windows logos, silly me for thinking that HP worked on Macs all the time.

anyway, I've registered for this board to post to THANK YOU ALL.

To recap, what worked for me were these instructions:

1) Download; http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg (Old version)
2) If you have anything for the HP 1020 in "/Library/Receipts" delete it.
3) Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in "Printer Setup Utility"
4) Add new printer in "Printer Setup Utility", select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD

The only thing I did different was make an alias of everything in the 1020 folder and stick it in the Laserjet folder. That might have been overkill but it works and I'm not touching it. I'm on G3 10.3.9 on two iBooks.

1020 v 1022 driver problems with OS X

I just tore through this thread - since I'd JUST purchased the 1020 at bestbuy last night (made them price match office depot's $99 advertised price).

Anyway - after no success with HPs downloaded driver - I erased the appropriate lib directories and stared over with the older drivers, and VOILA! I, too can confirm it works!

After having read peoples' disgruntled thoughts on HP support for macs I have the following thoughts: The fact that the printer was never MEANT to operate with a mac is NOT (i repeat, NOT) a technical issue. The folks at HP - I'm SURE - are QUITE aware of the compatibility issues. The reason they caution against it's use has FAR MORE to do with it's marketing dept than it's tech support dept. They just didn't anticipate the cheap mac bastards like us would go out, buy the cheapo version and try to get it to work on a mac with alternate drivers. But I don't think it's so much that we should be ANGRY at HP for this... their only oversight was giving it a model number too close to an existing mac-supported product. So - we win out in the end, right?

Luckily - we can take advantage of their marketing sloppiness, by saving $80-$100...!!

the cup's half FULL, y'know??

also - I was wondering if postscript LII (or beyond) compatibility is any more relevant... it seems that OS X with it's NeXT origins has native PS interpreters and just sends raster or hpgl to the printer anyway. I think this would have been a big issue on OS9 - but not here. Can anyone confirm or deny?

I am doing everything that has been described, using the old driver, but still the driver is not showing up when I go to add the printer. I'm using a new MBP and I'm a new Mac user...this is exactly why I switched to Mac and now Windows isn't looking so bad after all...very frustrated if anyone can help.

OK I have installed the same driver over and over again; done just about everything on every page in this thread; rebooted my Mac about 50 times but for some reason it just now recognized the driver after I rebooted. Very weird, but it works. Now I'm just scared to disconnect the printer because I'm going to have to go through 6 hours of frustration again.

I've been trying to connect to a LJ 1020 on a Vista networked machine. Anyone manage that yet? It was working with 10.4.8 and XP but not 10.4.10 and Vista

Exclamation I have the original driver for the 1020

I realize this thread is ancient, but it comes up high in Google searches for the LaserJet 1020 driver for Mac OSX. In the spring of 2006 HP diddled with the driver for the 1022 such that you can no longer use it with the 1020 on a Mac. Why they did this, I have no idea, but I have a DMG of the original, non-fouled-up driver here:

http://www.weightlessdog.com/shell.n...ks/TTUE-74U6EP

It's only about 1.5Mb and it works with both Intel and PPC Macs... my fiancee uses it just fine with her MacBook and I use it just fine with an iBook, an MBP and a 1Ghz G4 iMac.

I just wanted to kick this thread to announce that an opensource driver has been released for the HP 1020, 1018, 1005, 1000, etc. Search for foo2zjs mac.

Talking OK, I got it on an Intel Mac!

Erase absolutely everything that says HP or anything like it on your hard drive, both in your user folder and on the drive itself. Restart your computer. Install the 1022 driver listed here. http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg (Old version) Add printer. Enjoy.

Wow, what a painful, time-wasting process this has been. Much sympathy to all others who experienced the same. Like others, I tried *everything* on this thread; nothing worked except ONE suggestion. I got to point where the Printer Setup Utility could "see" the 1020, but wanted me to check a particular driver or printer model, and there was nothing that matched.

Thanks to Gubbins (post #160), I tried a "random" driver -- in my case, I looked under "Other," found a Gimp driver, then, as he/she suggested, "restarted once more and the correct printer driver (1020) was there."

It only took Gubbins an hour... took me all morning. ARgh!

Note to the person who suggested that Foos-whatever driver. I tried to download but there's no such page or diver available, at least from the Linux Fdn. site.

Another note: The person from Italy suggested we all just get rid of our 1020's and buy printers that were made to work w Macs. I understand that point, but with the 1020, I FINALLY found an inexpensive printer that runs fast, NEVER jams, and is quiet. Even if I had lots of money, I would want to stick with this little machine.

OK, everyone, cross your fingers, toes, legs and eyes to help make sure this fix continues to work.

Thank you thank you thank you!

After about 4 hours of going through this thread I managed to get my iMac G4 with 10.4.10 to print with the LaserJet1020. For info, I carried out the above instructions. It didn't work first time, so I moved the contents of the '1020' library into the 'laserjet' library [library/printers/hp/laserjet/]. (As suggested several times earlier in the thread)

When I did this the printer setup utility automatically finds the 1020 driver and then away you go!

Once again many thanks to all you helpful people out there. I see that this thread has 140,000 views - If anyone from HP is watching I would suggest thats a lot of bad press! If I hadn't already been given the printer I would have bought something else!

Greetings from sunny Wiltshire UK

Thumbs up Remove designjet & deskjet

1) Download; http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg (Old version)
2) If you have anything for the HP 1020 in "/Library/Receipts" delete it.
3) Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in "Printer Setup Utility"
4) Add new printer in "Printer Setup Utility", select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD

The above worked for me--but ONLY after removing designjet and deskjet folders (in Libary/Printers/hp), as suggested by somebody earlier!

I previously tried the foo2zjs package, but it only allowed me to print ONE page at a time, everytime I tried printing.

Praise God =D

Help !

I have the same problem. I download the 1022 drive and install it. I connected my Mac book to the HP 102 printer via USB. It work perfectly. But actually my HP 1020 printer is connected to a XP machine. I tried to add network printer in the Mac, I can find the 1020 on the network, but there never show up the driver in the drop down manual. And I even cannot locate the drive in the whole mac book. How can fix this? Please help!

Post I decided not to buy

I found this page after seeing a "fire sale" price at buy.com ($75 including free shipping). Their site has no tech specs mentioning compatible OS's so a quick search brought me to this thread. I was pretty excited at first, but when I got to the pages and pages of people having problems after the driver was updated and the old one was pulled, I started having second thoughts. It seems like there's a fairly-good chance of getting it working now, but with Leopard looming ever close, I decided not to buy.

But I'm posting this note for anyone else who might want to give it a try for $75.

The same thing happens to me. Thank you guys! Without your hints I would have had to throw my printer away!

I'm glad I read this thread before buying the supposedly good deal of an LJ1020. I think I'll pass on this, after seeing HP's lack of support for Mac users, and what seems like playing games to eliminate the 1022 support people were using.

I have seen some printers by Brother, which have a built-in network interface, support PostScript, and even do duplexing (two sided printing). They cost a little more, but are worth it in the long run.

I find that PostScript is the best option for Mac, Linux, or Unix use. PostScript is natively supported by all of those, so you're not converting to different formats, using proprietary drivers, or other problems. (I don't know if any of the drivers still work this way, but earlier Linux drivers I saw took Postscript as the input, and converted to the printer's native format. Might as well just stick with PostScript).
