I am new to the Mac world (I am liking it more now than I used to not like it.) In spite of its advantages, the Mac does have frustrating shortcomings. I have visited many message groups in an effort to solve my own problems and I have been even more frustrated when I see things like this. The problem presented here is: the user bought a printer and is trying to get it to work. The solution to the problem is either 1) no, it isn't possible or 2) it is possible and here's what you can try. Instead, what I see so much of are workarounds or lame "I-told-you-so's". "You should have checked the box before you bought it..." That does nothing to solve the problem. |

Are these work-arounds safe
Last night I read postings on this issue from last year and one of them cautioned people that updates to the driver or to the system could end up breaking the printer and the computer. I'm not sure how this might happen (I think it was explained). Anyway...how real is this possibility? Has anyone been using the 1020 this way long enough to know if any serious damage could be done? We're new to MACs and bought the 1020 about 3 months ago (too far back to return).
Would greatly appreciate insights. Thanks. |

I have a HP1020 on a JetDirect175x print server.
* I can use it from our XP boxes * I can use the printer directly via USB from my OS X machine * I can't get it to work on the Tiger machine when its on the print server using IP printing (only option available is the 'Generic' printer) Any suggestions what path I should follow in this situation? Cheers, Antony. |

After seeing the first couple of pages of the thread, I went out and bought a 1020 for $120. What a deal!
Then I came home only to find out the current 1022 driver does not work and I needed to download the new one. Arg. I should have read a few more pages. Anyway, I installed the old driver on my PPC machine (thanks to those of you who posted drivers!), hooked up 1020 (but without ripping open the ink cartridge), then got it recognized fine. Tried the same on my MacBookPro to no avil. I'm now on my way to returning the product. A printer like this should be an investment. An investment that should be guaranteed to work for at least a few years. The fact that HP's current 1022 driver does not support 1020 on OS X and even the old driver being painful to configure only means one thing: ain't worth it. Thanks a lot for this thread though. Without it, I would have twisted my head for a few more days before giving up. ;-) |

1020 problem
I'm having the same problem - we download the drivers (which appear in our printers/hp/laserjet folder as a new folder), but they don't appear in the menu in the Printer Utility, and we can't select the folder manually in the Printer Utility "add printer" window either
Any thoughts or suggestions??? |

Hello,
Despite reviewing all the posts in this thread, as well as following specific steps outlined, I am still having no luck getting this HP Laserjet 1020 to work with my G5 via USB. I'll try to explain what I've done so far - I am probably leaving some information out, or have gotten things out of order because I have been through this too many times - may need to reboot my brain: 1. Downloaded and installed the LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg file. Double-clicking on this file opened up a HP Laserjet 1020 Series.pkg file, which when double-clicked opened an installer window. Went through the numerous steps: Introduction, Licensing Agreement, "Easy Install on Macintosh HD", "Preparing the Disk/Running Installer Script", etc. until it said the software was successfully installed. I then closed the window and rebooted. 2. Then, as instructed by a post, I deleted the HP 1020 in "/Library/Reciepts" folder. 3. As suggested, I tried to "move everything from /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/1020Series/ up to /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/ but the computer wouldn't allow me to move these files "up a level". 4. When I tried to "add" a new printer in the "Printer Setup Utility", a window was displayed that recognized the "Product" as being an "HP Laserjet 1020", but under "Type" it said "Driver not installed". By the way, "USB" was selected at the top pull-down menu - I assume that's correct because that's how the printer is connected. (Not using a network of any kind.) Also, under "Printer Model", the "Auto Select" was grayed out. The ONLY option it allowed at that point was "Cancel", which only puts me back at square one. PLEASE HELP! I guess I need to start over. In the posted instructions by various people, it's never clear whether or when the printer should be connected and turned on, though I've tried various combinations. Maybe I need to reboot more than once, or at some other point in the process. Obviously I'm missing something. Basically, my setup is like anyone else with a G5 (OSX version???), an HP 1020 printer/beast, and the LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg file, so I shouldn't be having so much trouble. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone provide me with more specific instructions? Thank you for your help. obluegrass |

A 120$ printer and investment? phewwww... Why don't you guys just buy a printer that is supported out of the box? I work in a retail store in Italy and hopefully we don't have such a stupid return policy as in the US. You buy it, you keep it. Of course I will *never* tell to a customer to buy a product that is not officially supported and to look over the net for a solution. Neither would I buy such a thing. What is going to happen now with Leopard in the pipeline? Will the old driver still work? Make a real *investment* and buy a printer that is officially supported. maclover |

A lot of people seem to have gotten the 1020 running with OS X machines, judging from this & other forums on the subject. I figured it would be worth a try, since this printer appears to have the best set of basic features in its price range (now very low in the range, from some reputable sellers).
I've followed the tips given here last year, and the "old" 1022 driver successfully installs. Printer Utility sees the driver and communicates with the printer. Unfortunately, only the first print job after driver installation actually gets an initial response from the printer; within a few seconds this job stops, and all subsequent jobs attempted stop automatically without any printer response, though I clear the qeue. Is it possible I'm missing some simple step? To get this close suggests that things are on the right track. And a number of others have gotten this running successfully. Where's the hold up? Would be grateful for any suggestions. |

Printing over smb over network worked well before but now I upgraded my mac to 10.4.9 and my networked windows to vista and nothing works anymore. I think vista's new hassles with permissions is a cause and I can't add printers via smb like i used to be able in 10.4.8. Anyone managed to get it to work yet?

Never mind. Took it back today & got the Samsung equivalent, ML-2510 -- though the HP 1020 was appealing and still looks like it could have been the better deal of the moment, all things considered, if I'd had the knack to make it work. Anyway, I've learned a few things. And the Samsung is alright. Guess I've thrown in with the Let HP Go party.

wow its working, good call DeltaMac. I havent tried the HP CD, but after all this I wouldnt give them another dime.
Heres a recap for everyone to Install HP LaserJet 1020 on Mac OSX. 1) Download; http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg (Old version) 2) If you have anything for the HP 1020 in "/Library/Reciepts" delete it. 3) Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in "Printer Setup Utility" 4) Add new printer in "Printer Setup Utility", select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD Then you should be able to print.. glad we finally got around this one.. and one big FU to HP. Thank you Thank you thank you ! Got it up and running because this installer works ! I had to remove all the other installer drek from the libraries, as was recommended, but I finally got it to work. Saved me a trip back to staples. The little beast works fast ! Tarky7 |

Same "There is nothing to install" for me too ![]() the file has 1,639,016 bytes I opened the package contents - but i don't know wich one should be the driver - for the other printers looks like a printer-name.gz.001 file |

Well, I just can't thank all of you enough for your great suggestions. I have been going round and round with this literally for months, thinking that too much time had passed since I bought the printer (Costco I think it was), and was going to have to sell it for a song or just give it away, then go out and buy the Samsung equivalent I've seen mentioned in this thread.
However, today was a major turning point, thanks to the "old version" driver I downloaded kindly provided by Tarky7 (I think I had been fighting with the bad ugly evil newer driver, thinking that I had the old version all along). Following the simple steps first outlined by DeltaMac and recapped by Tarky7 worked perfectly (thank you!). However, steps 2 and 3 (below) in my case weren't necessary because there was nothing in those locations to delete. Anyway, after literally months of hair-pulling frustration, today I got what had become The Big Paperweight to finally print. It does indeed print beautifully and fast. Despite my appreciation for it, I'm going to have to agree with Tarky7 and offer HP a big FU too. Thanks again, Stephanie (obluegrass)

For those interested. I went to the HP website and downloaded the latest drivers for their HP LaserJet 1022. It is a Universal build, so good for both PPC and Intel. When I mounted the .dmg it gave me a package for hp laserjet 1020 series. I backed-up my previous 1020 folder in /Library/Printers/HP/laserjet/1020Series and went ahead and installed this new one. It updated the plugin hplj1020PM to version 1.2. I have not had any problems whatsoever. In fact, the time from sending a job to the printer to printing is much faster.
I am not sure if it is necessary to have the previous version installed first, or even whether I just got lucky with this driver installation. Provided a good back-up of the old driver, this might be worth a shot for some here. My set-up: PowerMac G5, 10.4.9 |

Hey guys. After around an hour I've finally managed to get this to work. Unfortunately, I started from Page 1 onwards, so installed quite a few packages which didn't help. The one that made it work was the one that older one that someone's linked to on here. At first it said "nothing to install" so I deleted everything like you guys asked. Then I installed it successfully. However, printer setup couldn't see it, so I just made it use another random driver (obviously didn't work). I then restarted once more and the correct printer driver (1020) was there. Thank God!
