If you don't care to have access to any of the utilities of the printer from the computer connected to your network wirelessly, I sucessfully installed the "Laserjet III Gimp driver" from the printer browser. I clicked the more printers button, and navigated to the shared printer on the computer (win98 box) listed under the workgroup I have setup. All this assumes you have acccess to the shared network resources and you have enable windows sharing on the Mac.

I have only printed simple text documents to the HP Laserjet 1020. Doesn't take too long to spool across the network nor is the printing any slower than on the box connected directly via USB. I haven't tried a more graphic intensive file or a PDF file yet.

Hope this helps.

I don't know if other people are having [more] trouble installing this printer on the new MacBooks, but I just got mine working and I'm going to add a little to the previous instruction list to reflect what I had to do... the MacBook was MUCH more picky about the ordering of what was connected and when:

For The MacBook:

1) Disconnect the HP 1020 if it is currently connected to the MacBook.
2 Download; http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg (Old version)
2) Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in "Printer Setup Utility"
3) If you have anything for the HP 1020 (or the 1022 from a failed installation) in "/Library/Reciepts" delete it.
4) Remove the 1020Series folder from "/Library/Printers/hp/laserjet" directory if it exists.
5) Reset the print system from the Printer Setup Utility
6) Reboot (the HP 1020 is still disconnected from the MacBook)
7) Run the installer package downloaded in step 2
8) Shut down the MacBook completely
9) While the MacBook is off, connect the HP 1020 and power the PRINTER on.
10) Power on the MacBook
11) Add new printer in "Printer Setup Utility", select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD

I have no idea why it was harder with the MacBook, but the install would not work until we connected the printer while the MacBook was powered down... go figure. Hope it helps!

Staples - bad advice

Someone mentioned to me today that she went to Staples and made it clear that she had a Mac to the salesperson.
The Staples salesperson assured her that it wouuld work with a Mac and she got home and was unable to get it working.
I've given her the info abouut the 1022 driver, but am a bit disconcerted to see that several people were also told by Staples employees that the 1020 would OFFICIALLY work with a Mac when it obviously isn't supported by HP. Is this a general issue with Staples - that employees recommend things just to sell it?

More problems...

I did what was said to do, and the first job I printed was great.

The next job was not. It printed the first page, then stopped. An orange blinking light came on.

After various troubleshooting steps (restarting my computer, turning the printer on and off, reinstalling the driver, re-adding the printer, etc), I'm running out of ideas.

The problem persists. Sometimes the printer will never finish processing the job (even if it processes 10 out of 10 pages) and sometimes it says, "Generic Class - Waiting for Device."

Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mark

A brute force solution

I also have a 1020 and it works flawlessly with my iMac G5 (10.4.8) with 1.0.1201 hp drivers (from Zenographics). I was trying to connect the printer with my daughter's iBook G4 (10.3.9). I tried all the advices in this forum, only for getting lots of 'driver not installed' messages.

So I copied to entire /library/printers/hp/laserjet (24.2 Mb!) from the iMac to the iBook. I restarted and powered off, plugged the USB cable, powered on... go to the Printers Utility and... bingo! It works (I have printed text files, Web pages, PDFs and a pair of Illustrator documents). Desktop printing works, too.

no dice

I have followed the directions in the previous posts. Printer Setup Utility recognizes the 1020 correctly and the printer appears when I attempt to print, however, when I attempt to print the lights on the printer alternate flashing red/green for a couple seconds, the printer warms up like it is about to print, then the lights stop flashing and the print job stalls. I'm running 10.4.8 on a G4 Tower. Any help would be appreciated. I'm thinking I should throw in the towel...

As has been noted - I've registered and posted to say 'Ta, very much indeed!'

I was struggling to get my MacBoook to drive the HP 1020 at work: previously my OS 10.3.9 iBook had built in drivers which JustWorked(TM).

For the record: I'm running an OS X 10.4.8 MacBook.
o I installed the HP 1022 driver
o I plugged the HP 1020's USB into the MacBook
o I restarted the MacBook - I know, I know, *ugly*...
o I then went to the printer setup in SysPrefs and the 1020 was identified with the correct driver.
o I printed...

I was having problems getting the 1020 dialogue and driver to appear for me. The two things I did to solve my problems were:
o Delete the 1020/22 receipt
o Restart the Mac (Ugh! Should *not* be necessary!)

E&OE (+ also excuse the spelling and grammer) - I'm mildly pished in the pub at 00:20. Hello! Embra, Scotland. Hello! IsoBar and free WiFi in turn for fantastic beer!

Important for MACBOOK users

MACBOOK USERS: While the information that TheMane posted a little bit above has been VERY useful, I still had problems installing the driver on my MacBook. It is important to note that I had been using OSX 10.4.7. I'd been reluctant to upgrade to 10.4.8 as I'd heard absolute horror stories about it from other users. Reluctantly, I upgraded my OS and then again (for the millionth time) followed the instructions that TheMane posted above (I've posted them below so that you don't have to go and search). It would seem that upgrading the OS to 10.4.8 is what has made all the difference. My new HP LJ1020 is working correctly (I am completely in utter shock!) and I can now finally get my essay done.

If you aren't already on OSX 10.4.8, upgrade now and then follow these steps:

Thanks TheMane for posting instructions that are made for Intel users. Seems like we'd been forgotten somewhere along the way!

Thanks for your help!!

Just wanted to pint out that being on a macbook with 10.4.8 i still had to move the files in the 1020series folder one step up into the laserjet folder as someone pointed out earlier, and then restart again. but now it's working!!

You guys saved me a lot of trouble, thanks again!!

Hi. I recently switched to a mac from windows xp and I have an HP Laserjet 1020. The link that was provided for the old printer driver (http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg (Old version)) doesn't work.

Can anyone email the old file to me?
My email is quesum at gmail dot com.

Thanks a lot!

Quesum, the link for the old printer driver does work. If you are using Safari, choose Downloads from Window menu, then click on the link http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg and you will see it being downloaded.

I downloaded the driver on Tuesday, Nov 14, 2006 at 23:45 (Pacific Time Zone) without a problem, then followed the instructions provided by TheMane in the earlier post and now I am printing happily, and without a hitch, to the LaserJet 1020 under 10.4.8

Driver cd please

[QUOTE=spacepirate;304220]Got one of these here in Australia from Officeworks. Connected the printer, popped in the CD, installed the software that showed up on the CD, added a new printer (it detected the printer, and automatically selected the newly installed driver).

Couldn't have been easier.[/QUOTE

I have read all the posts. I also cannot print with 1020.
The problem is the old driver that we try to install says there is nothing to install. The new driver can be installed without having problem. I think those who doesnt have a installation cd are having problem. I think if we have copy of cd we will be able use our printer. Can somebody upload this cd image to rapidshare and send us the link. I think we will be able to use our printers if we have that cd.

Heres a recap for everyone to Install HP LaserJet 1020 on Mac OSX.

1) Download; http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg (Old version)
2) If you have anything for the HP 1020 in "/Library/Reciepts" delete it.
3) Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in "Printer Setup Utility"
4) Add new printer in "Printer Setup Utility", select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD

Then you should be able to print.. glad we finally got around this one.. and one big FU to HP.

fpc:
I wanted to say thanks so much for the step-by-step instructions. I have a Mac OS X (version 10.3.9) and also purchased the hp laserjet 1020 and have been cursing it since day one. I decided to come online one last time and nose around for information and your instructions made the transition effortless. I didn't have to reboot or download any other extra items or move things around or jump through any other hoops! So, thanks again and Happy Holidays!

Unhappy HP LaserJet 1020 driver issue

I downloaded the 1022 driver and installed it on my iMac G5, OS X 10.4.8. When I add the printer through System Preferences-Print & Fax, it is recognized and waits for me to choose a model before I can add the printer. I have searched the list seventeen times and cannot find the HP LaserJet 1020, 1022 or any other 1000 series. The list starts with the 1200. I have also reinstalled the driver several times (LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg file). Frustration is an understatement. I feel like I am working on a Windows machine. Please help.

THANK YOU FPC!!!! Did not see your quote before submitting my plea. Your step-by-step instructions worked perfectly. Thanks again. And you are right, HP really FU on this one.
