After having to go through this again after rebuilding my laptop, I decided to just package the right files together and create a quick installer.

Here it is: http://yogipatel.net/static/HP_Laser...ard_Driver.dmg

Once installed, plug in the printer, go to Printer Setup, and select the printer from the list. The driver should be automatically detected as a "HP LaserJet 1020". I've tested it with all versions of Leopard on intel machines, and seems to work fairly well.

I also have hosted the original file that DOES work in Leopard....

http://test.reactornet.net/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg

again, this works 100% in Leopard on my mac mini.

I just got the mini (after fighting with XP for more than I care to say--[I was a pre-RC1 beta tester for XP])

Mac stuff....just works!
And so does this driver.

nothing works!

I have tried everything listed on this site trying to install an HP 1022 on a new iMac running MAC OS 10.5.4.

I have deleted the pertinent files, restarted, installed all the suggested options (with the printer disconnected), over and over again. NOTHING appears when I click on Add New Printer.

Any advice??????

This is the best advice I've gotten thus far

If you have already attempted an install of some sort, take these steps before proceeding:
  1. Unplug the USB cable from the computer.
  2. Navigate to /Library/Receipts
  3. Search for any .pkg files that have anything to do with 1020 or 1022.
  4. Delete the files.
  5. Navigate to /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet.
  6. Delete the 1020Series folder.
  7. Shut down (This might seem unnecessary, but it won't hurt anything and gives us a "fresh" state to work off of.)

Proceed only if you have performed the steps above, or have not yet attempted any install of drivers:
  1. Download the old driver.
  2. Run the installer, even though it says 1022.
  3. Shut down completely, and connect the USB cable to the computer and printer.
  4. Restart the system.
  5. Open the Printer Setup Utility and add the printer. The driver should come up right away. (If, at this point it does not, keep retrying the steps. It took me a little trial and error to even get this far. Oh, and make sure to breathe.)
  6. Print a test page. Take a note in the "Copies & Pages" drop list that some of the options are crossed out. If you want to remedy this, keep reading..
  7. Sit back and smile, laugh, cheer, give a friend/partner a hug.. it worked!

If you want to use the latest driver, it works perfectly and enables a few options like resolution control, paper type and density.
  1. Download the new driver and mount the .dmg
  2. Right click on hp LaserJet 1020 Series.pkg and choose "Show Package Contents."
  3. Navigate to Contents and double click Archive.pax.gz. A folder should now be on your desktop called "Library."
  4. Open the new "Library" folder and navigate through Printers > hp > laserjet. Drag "1020Series" to your desktop and rename it "New"
  5. Now navigate to /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet and drag the existing "1020Series" folder to your desktop, and rename it "Old"
  6. Drag the "New" folder in to the laserjet folder, and rename it "1020Series"
  7. Print a test page. Note in "Copies & Pages" that Paper, Print Quality and Print Options are now enabled.
  8. Repeat step 7 from before.

I registered just to say this is the best advice I've gotten thus far. I am running a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.5.4 and have a HP 1020 LaserJet. I followed every direction and my printer works. Thanks.

Hi, this is a great thread. I have tried the above and it has worked to get the 1020 printing when connected with the USB. However, I'm trying to get it connected through a wireless print server. In order to do that, I have to able to select the driver from the driver list. Am I missing something? Has anyone been able to get it to pop up in the driver list? Thanks in advance!

After getting help from this forum, my 1020 was working fine on my macbook, but for no apparent reason it has stopped printing from documents. (Neo office or Open Office). I can print emails, or printer friendly pages from the internet, but not from documents. They go into the print queue, then disappear without printing. They do appear in completed documents, but I never get a hard copy!
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Exclamation A Year Later...

It seems a year later things don't work the way they did, with the release of software updates and the like. Many of you have emailed personally asking for help. Unfortunately I no longer use this printer, so I am unable to assist further in making it work.

I encourage everyone to be a little resourceful and learn to dig around in the system guts and see what happens where. With a little time and patience.. and especially patience.. you'll learn what's going on and maybe you might figure out the solution!

Good luck.

Thank you for this, it's excellent. I tried using this technique on my new MacBook Pro with Leopard and can't get it to recognize the drivers. Has anyone tried to install their HP LaserJet 1020 on the Leopard OS?

Just to add to this summation, how to resolve issues with networking:

1. Shared Printer Connected to Windows Machine

So after seeing the trouble people were having here, and after my own mistakes and errors in trying to do so, I thought I should post my little (huge) guide here about networking from an OSX machine to a WinXP machine connected to the LaserJet 1020:

---

1: Ensure that the WinXP machine has the printer sharing turned on for the 1020, a shared name that is no longer than 8 characters (for simplicity), as well as permissions to print for the account through which you wish to access the printer. (the permissions will generally default to letting any account print after enabling sharing so that last part shouldn't be an issue)

2: Download the Zenographics MAC Monochrome Driver onto your mac from: http://oem.zeno.com/public/SDK/4_Mac...er/Default.htm (it's the second link on that page).

3: Mount the Zenographics .dmg and install the driver

4: Open the "Printer Setup Utility"

5: Click "Add"

6: While holding the "alt" key, click "More Printers..."

7: From the first dropdown, select "advanced".

8: For "Device", select Windows Printer via SAMBA

9: Pick a colorful name for your printer and place it in "Device Name"

10: For "Device URI" use the format: smb://usernameassword@WORKGROUP/XP_MACHINE_NAME/SHARED_PRINTER_NAME

11: For "Printer Model", select "ESP" and then select the "Zenographics SDK Mono CUPS v1.1" printer.

12: Select "ADD"

13: Your printer should work!

Elaborations for tricky steps:
1: You should know how to do this, but if not: right click on the 1020 printer in the "Printers" control panel and select "Sharing and Security". Check "Enable sharing for this device". Exhaustive information on how to share a printer is readily available online, so I'm not going to go into that any further.

10: This format screws people up sometimes. If you have the guest account enabled on the XP host machine, you may not need the usernameassword section, but just for completeness, you would use "smb://guest@WORKGROUP..." I hate the guest account and leave it disabled, so I set up a special account for printing on the XP machine called "PrintAccount" with a password "LetsPrint". The XP machine is on the workgroup "WORKGROUP", the XP machine is named "XPBOX", and the 1020 is shared as "1020SHARED". My string looks like this: smb://PrintAccount:LetsPrint@WORKGROUP/XPBOX/1020SHARED".

11: If you don't see the ESP group or the CUPS printer afte installing the Zenographics driver, try rebooting. If that doesn't work, reinstall the driver.

13: If your printer doesn't work, look at the error you get back in the print queue. Something like NT_ACCESS_DENIED means the XP machine rejected your request for access. This is either because you didn't enable printer sharing on the XP machine, your printer sharing permissions on the XP machine are wrong, or you put in the wrong username/password combination in the URI string. NT_ACCOUNT_NOTEXIST or something means the account does not exist that you are trying to use in the URI.

----

Phew, ok. I hope that helps. The 1020 is a great little printer (and often very cheap after markdowns). It's definitely nice to have networked.

-TheMane

2. Printer With Built-In Network Card With Static IP:

I know that the HP LJ1020 does not have the ethernet card built in, I am including what I found to solve my problem with the HP LJ1022n (seeing as how the two are so close).

My problem is that none of the drivers were (seemingly) satisfactory for printing over the network (LPD). During "Add Printer," when it came time to select the driver, regardless of which driver I had installed, I would always be forced into using the "Generic PostScript Printer" and not a more functional driver.

Although this would work for a local printer, when I tried to print over the network, I would receive the following error:

Network host '165.91.177.54' is busy; will retry in 15 seconds...

So, 2 issues:
Non-acceptable driver
No network printing
  1. I installed the Foomatic-hpijs driver, which includes support for 655 different printers including the 1022, but this may not be necessary for everybody

    http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/Op...g/MacOSX/hpijs

  2. Next, I had to go into CUPS ( http://localhost:631 ) and change a few settings for my printer after adding it in "Print & Fax" Pref Pane.

    The steps are:
    • Select Publish Printer
    • Select Modify Printer.
      1. Go through the first steps, taking note of your printer's ip. As I said before, mine is 165.91.177.54
      2. Select device as AppSocket/HP Jet Direct
      3. Set Device URI as "socket://hostname:9100", which for me would be "socket://165.91.177.54:9100"
      4. Set Make as "HP"
      5. Model (aka Driver), I selected my "HP LaserJet 1022 Foomatic/hpijs" driver.
      6. Select "Modify Printer"... and Voila! It works!
  3. To finish off, I went to that printer in CUPS and printed a test page. No delays, no errors and fast multi-page printing.

The CUPS modification was the least obvious of the whole thing and would never have known to go there were it not for:

What helpful information!! Last month I ventured into the apple family with my first ipod and today we came home with an iMac.

I was a little worried we would need to buy a new printer when I came across the issue with the 1020.

Thank you so much for posting this and saving me some extra cash. I can now print and it was so easy!!

Sharing Windows Printer in 10.5.7

Hi, is there a version of this procedure that works in OS X 10.5? (10.5.7 specifically)? The printer setup dialog is different in 10.5 vs. 10.4. I am trying to do essentially the same thing - print from a PowerBook G4 that is on a wireless network with a Windows XP SP3 desktop connected to a LaserJet 1020 via USB.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Broken in Snow Leopard

I've tried all the old "tricks" (old 1022 drivers) and none of them work. Same issue with PrintJobMgr which apparently needs Rosetta to work (which it auto-downloaded, kinda cool) but it would just hang on add printer.

Yep. I think us Intel Mac users have reached the end of the line with this printer. I'd hate to see it go on Craig's List. The toner has been such a good deal. I got through college with only 1 toner replacement. ...Should add that included English 101 & 102, tons of drafts and writing assignments.

Since 10a432 appears to be GM, if anyone else can mess with it and post your findings here, that would be glorious. I'll be back here if I get any life out of it.

HP 1020 on Snow Leopard

Does anybody know if the HP 1020 will print via this method in Snow Leopard? I realize that SLeopard came out today but I would like to know that I can print before I install.
