The above worked for me--but ONLY after removing designjet and deskjet folders (in Libary/Printers/hp), as suggested by somebody earlier!

This worked for me as well (not sure how anyone figured this one out to begin with). I had to also remove the "Utilities" directory temporarily from /Library/Printers/hp.

easy to install foo2zjs

You need to compile the driver from scratch, so you need the developer tools installed, and it requires a lot of dependancies that need to also be installed.

you're not kidding when you say it's a bit of a headache!

luckily, somebody has now done all the hard work for us i tried both the old HP driver and the generic Zeno driver and couldn't get it to work over the network to a windows printer server. works like a charm with foo2zjs, though.

here's where to get the packages:

thanks to all who have provided info in this thread! i'd be lost without you...

so i take it the HP Laserjet 1020 working fine with the above driver.

Wondering whether i should buy this printer or not. The factor for me is the great price and i can replace the cartridges for €39.95 which is cheaper than any other laser printer.

Got it to work finally ....

I have tried all the different suggestions people had ... old driver, new driver , went through all the different steps and couldn't make the driver work .. i mean the installation was fine, i just could not add the printer, my os x would see the printer, but the hp 1020 wasn't on the list ....

I am using MacBook Pro (intel base) with OS X version 10.4.10.

I hope this helps!
Greetings All,

I bought a LJ 1020 a long time ago, used it on an ancient iMac with no problem (using the included installer CD). Then moved it home to use with my similarly ancient b/w G3. Went through all the trouble described in this forum to no avail as far as downloading a driver to make it work. Went back to the ancient iMac (which is still used once in a while at my office), copied the Laserject folder from the library/printers/hp/ directory to a CD. Took it home replaced the same folder on my B/W G3 at home and without a reboot it worked. Just went to ad printer and it showed up in the list! Here is a link to the file for anyone who may need it:

http://www.thisisyouraudiospace.com/printer/

It is a quick download. I hope this saves some of you some headache and trouble.

This is worked for me ...
1. download the laserjet zip file
2. unzip it somewhere on your hard drive / or desktop
3. go to library/printers/hp/laserjet/1020series
4. replace the files in above folder with the one from the laserjet file which you downloaded and unziped. basically the file name are exactly the same but the content seems to be diffrent.
5. you do not need to restart .. just go to system preferences then print & fax and then try to add the printer. make sure the printer is pluged in and then os x should detect the driver right away.

I hope this helps .. thanks to wlfrancis who put the files online.

Cheers,
IPI

Hi there,

Just wanted to say thanks for people's help in this post!

I can confirm that since bought a 1020 today (with some skepticism!) and following the instructions posted here - last posted by kmm - it works perfectly, first time.
Was alot easier then I thought!

So if you are thinking of buying one of these printers, I would really recommend. It works a treat!

Wow... Over 150000 pageviews??? This thread shows up near the top of the list when searching for "hp 1020 driver".

For all new users posting to this topic, please read what other people have posted before asking another duplicate question. Many have already figured out how to get their printer to work.

Thumbs up Success!

This thread has been instrumental in helping get the HP LaserJet 1020 to work on a MacBook (Mid-2007) running OS X 10.4.10. And now I've figured out how to get the NEW drivers to work! I know this is repetitive, but I'm gonna repeat the steps just so everyone can be on the same page

If you have already attempted an install of some sort, take these steps before proceeding:
  1. Unplug the USB cable from the computer.
  2. Navigate to /Library/Receipts
  3. Search for any .pkg files that have anything to do with 1020 or 1022.
  4. Delete the files.
  5. Navigate to /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet.
  6. Delete the 1020Series folder.
  7. Shut down (This might seem unnecessary, but it won't hurt anything and gives us a "fresh" state to work off of.)

Proceed only if you have performed the steps above, or have not yet attempted any install of drivers:
  1. Download the old driver.
  2. Run the installer, even though it says 1022.
  3. Shut down completely, and connect the USB cable to the computer and printer.
  4. Restart the system.
  5. Open the Printer Setup Utility and add the printer. The driver should come up right away. (If, at this point it does not, keep retrying the steps. It took me a little trial and error to even get this far. Oh, and make sure to breathe.)
  6. Print a test page. Take a note in the "Copies & Pages" drop list that some of the options are crossed out. If you want to remedy this, keep reading..
  7. Sit back and smile, laugh, cheer, give a friend/partner a hug.. it worked!

If you want to use the latest driver, it works perfectly and enables a few options like resolution control, paper type and density.
  1. Download the new driver and mount the .dmg
  2. Right click on hp LaserJet 1020 Series.pkg and choose "Show Package Contents."
  3. Navigate to Contents and double click Archive.pax.gz. A folder should now be on your desktop called "Library."
  4. Open the new "Library" folder and navigate through Printers > hp > laserjet. Drag "1020Series" to your desktop and rename it "New"
  5. Now navigate to /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet and drag the existing "1020Series" folder to your desktop, and rename it "Old"
  6. Drag the "New" folder in to the laserjet folder, and rename it "1020Series"
  7. Print a test page. Note in "Copies & Pages" that Paper, Print Quality and Print Options are now enabled.
  8. Repeat step 7 from before.

I registered just to share my success with everyone. If you are still having trouble come over to my website at csmoll.com and send me a message.

Thanks for the detailed instructions, CSMoll. I just picked up a 1020 today ($99.95 at Office Depot) and when I saw that it only supported Windows, I was about to jump back in the car and return it, but decided it was worth a Google search, which brought me here. It appears to work flawlessly.

HP LaserJet 1020 and windows printing

I have been trying for a while to do remote printing to a HP LaserJet 1020 from a windows XP without success.

My config is as such :
HPLJ1020 attached to a blue&white G3 running OSX 10.4. I use the old driver for HPLJ1022. (I also have an unsupported SCSI card in it).
DELL laptop with Windows XP up to date.

Mac sharing printing has always worked perfectly. Power up G3(no login required), power up printer and print.

As for windows connection, I have tried configuring it via bonjour and windows "add printer" as specified in threads such as "Panther printer sharing with WinXP Home" and other sites. I also used the raw printer on MAC with CUPS interface.

But it just does not work. I get a page to print sometimes or the orange light on the printer to flicker with out anything comming out. Usually, the print order gets into the "completed queue" without anything printed.

Has anyone got such configuration working?

Heres a recap for everyone to Install HP LaserJet 1020 on Mac OSX.

1) Download; http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg (Old version)
2) If you have anything for the HP 1020 in "/Library/Reciepts" delete it.
3) Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in "Printer Setup Utility"
4) Add new printer in "Printer Setup Utility", select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD

Then you should be able to print.. glad we finally got around this one.. and one big FU to HP.

I used this a couple of months ago to install this printer in Tiger but didn't register to give thanks. After installing Leopard the 1020 disappeared, but I came back, found this post again, repeated the exact steps and BINGO! Works in Leopard too!!

Many, many thanks!!!

Like many others, I, too, registered only to add my deep appreciation to CMOLL for the instructions posted on 09-21-2007 at 06:24 PM. Those directions worked perfectly for me running Leopard 10.5. AWESOME! If I knew where to have an ice-cream cone delivered, I'd see to it!

Kudos to csmoll for providing this walk-through! I did all the steps related to the "old" driver, and the printer now works perfectly on regular one-sided prints.

I did, however, have some trouble getting the new driver to work...

The only thing I would like to work from the new driver is the duplex option. I see in the folder I have renamed "New" on my desktop that there is a plugin called duplex, so I assume this is one of the features that will be added with the new driver. The problem is that I cannot find a folder called /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet. Rather, I find /Library/Printers/HP Laserjet 1020.app

So, there is no subfolder, only the application. When I double-click it, it opens the HP print queue...

Therefore I don't know what to do with the "New"-folder that should have replaced the "old" one in the Library (which is not there)...

If anyone could help me out, I'd be grateful! Please send me a personal message or an e-mail in addition to replying here, if you have the time!

I've seen the posts above and are all from two years ago. But I'm facing the same problem now. I downloaded the driver HP 1022, but a warning apears in the screen saying that the file was probably corrupted and asking me if I wanted to install it anyway. I did it and after the installation process began, a new message apeared saying that there was nothing to be installed.

I believe I need a new driver file, not corrupted. Can anybody help me? I really need it very much.

My printer worked at first, but it is no longer working...

Thank you everyone,

My printer is now working after I followed the instructions above. However, I interrupted a printing job once and now it is no longer working. I deleted the jobs and started over and it is still not printing. When I click on the printer, it says it is waiting for the device. I turn everything on and off. And it is still, stuck. I clear everything and start over and it is not printing. The printer is not responding.

Any one else with similar problems with this HP 1020 laser-jet?

:-)
