Crap. I upgraded to SL and now my printer is a dead brick.

The foo2zjs method is atrocious. You gotta fiddle with command line before you print anything.

It's easier to Ebay the printer and get a new one if no one finds a solution.

SpaceTurtle, thanks! I'll definitely give this a try if 10.6.1 (which is due in few days and supposedly addresses various printing issues) doesn't resolve this issue.

10.6.1 is out but doesn't fix the issue. You still can't install the 1022 driver

Apple just released HP printer updates with 1022 driver but I can't get it to work with 1020. I'm guessing that we need to modify some of the files to accept 1020's signature.

Anyone have any ideas???

I found a solution on Mac Forums ...

I have a 2007 Aluminum iMac, and also had no luck at all in using my HP LaserJet 1020 after the Snow Leopard was installed. I had downloaded the SL update from Apple. I had also found a printer driver update file at Apple. But, they all did NOT work. I found a solution this morning at Mac Forums;

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=774965

The user, "insecto", originally posted this.

His solution is not quick. It took me about 1 hr 45 min from start to finish. You have to download things, run some scripts in the terminal, etc. His instructions were clear to follow. You will need to run a very quick "script" each time the printer is turned on, etc.

I agree it is not the most elegant thing to do. I wish we Mac/HP users did not have to do this. But, it is better than having to spend more $$ to purchase a new printer.

I wish everyone else luck and hope it works for you too.

dustingold, if you have reviewed this thread - you would know that HP does not, and has not released OS X drivers for the HP Laserjet 1020. This thread is all about work-arounds to get other drivers to work with the 1020 on OS X. Some are more successful than others.

How would a link to the Brother site help in this case? Looks a little like shameless Spam...

Please hit the triangle under "dustingold09" name and report the spam.

The latest I have heard on 1020 issue is that new HP drivers check for 1020 and then disable the print queue. You can add the printer just fine but then HP disables it. This is done on purpose.

To get around this will require patching of the print driver.

Hi.. I'm having a hard time making my HP Laserjet 1020 run on my Mac. I tried almost all the post i found on the internet but none of them seems to work. Installing the third-party driver found on most sites is not working on my mac. It just detects the printer but not the driver. I'm using a Macbook and the software version is Snow Leopard 10.6.3... Thanks.

Discovery of a workable solution

I've got an HP LaserJet 1020, and I too was having trouble getting a workaround to function on my brand-new macbook pro running OS X version 10.6.3, after switching from my old Gateway laptop.

Eventually, after enough searching around, I found a solution that seems to have worked thus far, with which I am pretty satisfied. Now, admittedly, I am a newly-converted PC user, and I'm not sure of all the technical details that come with using a Mac, but I'll try and take you through the steps. Some of these are likely to be redundant, and I welcome suggestions to streamline these steps from more experienced Mac users.

1) Go to the HP site and download the old (2006) driver for the HP 1022, entitled "universal binary full solution".
(this can be found at: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...5&swEnvOID=219)
2) remove any prior printer installations (through the "system preferences" under "print & fax").
3) delete any files in the "library/printers/HP" folder (through "finder").
4) Install the file from step 1.
5) Go to "system preferences", choose "print & fax", and click the "add" (+) button to add your printer.
6) Under the setting "Print using", you will have a drop down box. Choose "HP LaserJet 1022, 1.2.0.224".
7) You will get an error message stating that the software is incomplete or might not work. Ignore that for now.
8) The HP Laserjet 1020 should now appear, along with an error symbol. Click on the button "options & supplies...", then click the "driver" tab.
9) It should show a message stating your driver is not functioning.
10) Click the apple button (top left corner of computer) and choose "software update".
11) The computer should automatically download an update for your selected driver. Once downloaded, you should be able to print!

Give it a shot. It worked for me.

Wow thanks again overpanic... I am able to wirelessly print using the usb port on the time capsule now. Because my mac already had the correct drivers from following your steps this was easy.

Enter airport settings, make sure time capsule has "share printer over wan" is checked off"
Then follow step 5 and step 6.

Overpanic - thanks for the instructions! Did the trick for me.

I remember the hassle of getting a 1020 driver to work in Leopard, so was prepared for the worst in Snow Leopard. I'm so glad that this works. Saves having to buy a new HP printer (I believe HP now build in an expiry date on their toner cartridges so you're forced to replace the toner even if you've not used it all I've had mine working on the same toner for about 4 years, lol)

Hi, I see that a lot of people have gotten their HP LaserJet 1020 to work using the drivers provide in the links going back several years. I, too, was able to get it to work - once. It refuses to print anymore... It just gives me a message that says "waiting for device." With my laptop that has Tiger, it ran fine, but I had to manually delete the last file printed before the next file would print. Is anyone else experiencing this? It is the most bizarre thing.

Any suggestions?

Thumbs up 1020 driver for mac

try this step for installing hp1020 plus in mac OS

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907

Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion (10.6, 10.7 and 10.8)

1 Turn off and unplug the printer.

2 Download and install the drivers. See external links above. Note that the file is very large and will take some time to download. (If you take the time to look at the supported printer models, you’ll notice that HP Laserjet 1020 isn’t among them. Don’t worry about that just yet.)

3 Restart your Mac computer.
4 Turn on and connect the printer.
5 Go to System Preferences > Print and Fax.
6 Press + to add printer.
7 Open the driver list and select HP Laserjet 1022. Make sure not to select the Gutenberg version.

Older Macs

1 Turn off and unplug the printer.
2 Download and install the latest HP Drivers. See external links above.
3 Go to the Printer Setup Utility and choose HP Laserjet 1022 1.3.0.261.
4 Download this file www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg.

5 Go to /Library/Receipts and delete any files for the HP 1020. Examples include "hp LaserJet 1020 Series.pkg."
6 Go to the Printer Setup Utility and delete any files for the HP 1020.
7 Run the DMG file. It is labeled as "hp Laserjet 1022 Series.pkg," but run it anyway.
8 Turn on and connect the printer.
9 Go to System Preferences > Print and Fax.
10 Select HP LaserJet 1020. If the printer does not show up on the Printer Setup Utility, you may need to select Browser on the same dialog box and click on the HP1020 name there.
11 Click add.
