Upgrading to 10.4 without upgrading Perl/MySQL

Is there a way to upgrade from Server 10.2.8 to 10.4 without upgrading MySQL and Perl. I have noted from many discussion boards that existing MySQL set ups get broken whether upgrading to 10.3 or 10.4. I have also run the upgrade on a test server and have had gotten major errors in relation to Perl, DBI, and DBD::MySQL. I would like to do the upgrade leaving my existing Perl, and MySQL as is, and upgrade that at my leisure.

I think the only way to do that would be to first move the existing Perl & mySQL to some other location in the filesystem (e.g. /myStuff) and then make all the necessary changes so that it worked at this new location.

Then just ignore the new versions that will get installed with the OS.
I don't think that is a good idea - there will have been security fixes in the newer versions. It may take some work, but I would recommend doing what is necessary to use the newest versions.
