Application to burn copies of DVD movies (VIDEO_TS folders)
I have been using my uncle's dual G5 and Toast 6 to backup my DVD movies. However, I no longer have access to that machine, and therefore Toast.
It is a pretty expensive program, and i really only used it to burn movies playable in my computer and most DVD players, so i can't really justify spending $100 on it. So does anyone know of a free app that burns VIDEO_TS folders in the manner that toast did (Data --> UDF) so that they are playable in DVD players & my computer? I tried BurnX Free which i found from Macupdate, and unsucessfully burnt two coasters with it. So before i move on, i want to find out if anyone has had success at this with a free app they could point me to. Thanks |

Finder should be able to burn them, I've burnt them using disk utility from disk images before to back mine up.
Just make sure you don't burn the contents of VIDEO_TS to the dvd, make sure the actual folder is burnt. (ie, when you open the dvd in the finder there is the VIDEO_TS folder and the .vob, etc files are contained within that.) Don't Pirate Movies (I know you say these are backups for you, but others maybe searching for answer)

Hmm..the first thing i tried was the Finder, which didn't work. Furthermore, I don't get what Toast does to the files that make them playable in my computer and a DVD Player, when it seemingly doesn't do anything special -- maybe it has to do with burning data in UDF format (i don't know what that is)
I agree. Don't pirate movies. We all pay in the end. |

DVDImager

Takes a VIDEO_TS folder and makes a UDF formatted image out of it. After that, use disk utility to burn the image to disc. |

DVDBackup
I used to use an application called DVD Backup (maybe one word?). This will let you copy the contents to your hard drive unencrypted, then you can burn it back off to another DVD.

Ah, exactly what i was looking for. I don't care too much for the disappearing progress bar, but maybe that's just a tiger incompatibilty. The app Disc Burner also can take the VIDEO_TS folder and make a UDF image out of it, so i'm using that because it is a little easier to use, and easier on the eyes. Thanks for the suggestion, I'm glad there was a free way to do this.

That's not the problem i was having. I understand it needs to be de-macrovisioned and de-RCE'd first, but i didn't know that Toast actually converts the VIDEO_TS folder to UDF format on-the-fly while burning -- which is why i couldn't understand why burning it through the Finder like any other data wasn't working. Universal Disk Format -- you learn something new every day.

Damn. That all made sense, too, but the burn doesn't work as it should.
Any other ideas? |

Heh. okay. Turns out you have to use Disk Utility to burn the image (as Saint.Duo said) but i was trying to do it via the Finder (which i'm not sure why doesn't work, but it didn't)
anyway. to sum it up, 1) Exctract and decrypt dvd with your choice program 2) Compress the VIDEO_TS folder (if needed) 3) Use DVDImager to convert the VIDEO_TS folder to a UDF image of the movie 4) Burn the image with Disk Utility |

The finder puts an ISO9660 (if i remember right) wrapper around media that it burns, so that computers can read it. So the disc it makes isn't UDF like you need. Disk utility uses the format that is stored in the image file itself.

I see.
Well for some reason or another, the video stream doesn't play in my commercial DVD Player (only audio), but it plays fine on my Mac. I've decided to go ahead and purchase Popcorn by Roxio. |

How long does this Disk Imager program usually take with a Video_TS file to create a UDF?

I have about $200 worth of M*A*S*H dvds all in one little case and I'm about to move into a dorm, so I've been trying to figure out how to make backups of them. Suffice it to say, it's proven very difficult. I use Mactheripper to rip the dvd, but when I tried to compress it with Handbrake, it would only compress one episode at a time, and it took ages just to do that. Is there a way or a program that will compress it better? Plus, what happens to the menus if you compress the dvd? Is there a way to compress them and keep them in the DVD format? After I get through that, I'll probably have the same issue as stated above, and I just switched to Macs, so I hope I can figure it out.
Somebody needs to write some sort of tutorial (or show me where someone already has). Thanks for your time. |
