Please, how to boot from a USB flash drive?

With BootCD and CarbonCopyCloner does not work.

Can you even see the USB drive as an available boot drive if you go to the Startup Disk section of System Preferences ?
Also, this Applle KB suggests that you may simply need to update her HD drivers for your usb drive... Or follow other suggestions listed in the kb articles.

You can't boot OS X from a USB device because it resets the USB bus right in the middle of the process.

OS 9 used to work, on the machines it could boot. Which is what that KB article is addressing.
