Out of memory error for printer

I went to print out an e mail tonight and I got an error saying I was out of memory. I tried several different files with both printers connected and got the same message.

I restarted on my backup drive (I backup every night) and was able to go to the file on my main desktop and print it out without any problem.

I restarted again with the main drive and still have the error message each time I try to print. If I log in as another user the problem persists.

This is the only problem I have, but I have to be able to print!

I'm running 10.3.8 on a MDD dual 1 GHz G4 with 768 MB DDR SDRAM
2 80 gig hard drives both with appx 15 gigs empty.

Any ideas???

Thanks,

pgr

Can you try uninstalling - reinstalling printer drivers on the faulty drive ?

I deleted the two printers and then when I went to add them in again under the printer setup utility I received this message for both printers

"An error occured while trying to add the selected printer"
"Successful-ok-conflicting-attributes"

Printer info is stored in /Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist

You could try renaming that to see if it fixes your problem.

I found it, but what should I rename it to?

Whatever you want, it doesn't matter. The point of renaming is, if that doesn't work, you can always rename it back to the original name and loose nothing. By renaming it, when the printer util looks for .Globalwhatever, it's not there, so a new one is created.

That didn't make any difference, still the same message.

I tried restarting and reinstalling the drivers from one printer from the CD and I received this message

"Software requires administrator or higher level to access privileges"

I am the administrator and the only user of this computer. My password hasn't changed. I have never received a message like that before while installing anything until now.

Everything still works fine but I can't print.

Hmm.. Since the problem follows you to other users, maybe this is a driver problem, and the one off the CD is out of date/buggy? Have you downloaded the 'latest' version off the website? What kind of printer is it?

Are you using Virex 7.5.1 by any chance? Is there anything relevant in the logs?

It's a brand new printer (less than six weeks old) and it worked perfectly (Epson RX600) until last night, the other one in an Epson 740 workhorse that won't die.

I don't use Virex. Here is part of the log but I don't have that much knowledge to understand it.

None of that has anything to do with that. All the stuff has to do with your reboot.

Printing again

I rebooted on my back up drive and repaired disk permissions on my main drive then I rebooted on the main drive and the driver CD ran fine. It said it didn't have to install anything because it was already installed. I added both printers with the printer setup utility and when I selected each printer they both worked again.

Thanks for your help.

Hmm.. that is unusual. Something in your /Library/Receipts (on your boot drive) is messed up because that is what is referenced when you repair permissions. Gald you got it working though.
