My wife was surfing with Safari and, quite unexpectedly, her navigation buttons (e.g., back/forward) and Bookmarks Bar became invisible. The navigation buttons work, you just can't see them. In addition, all the icons in the Safari preferences (e.g., General, Appearance, Tabs, etc.) show the default "Apps" icon.
She uses an iBook. I've never experienced this and can't seem to get the buttons visible again. Any help is greatly appreciated. Steve |

You can reset the appearance of Safari to defaults by quitting Safari and trashing the file in your user/Library/Preferences folder, named com.apple.safari.plist

I tried your suggestion of trashing the com.apple.safari.plist, but it didn't solve the problem. The buttons are still invisible. Any other possibilities?
Thanks. |

Have you tried repairing file permissions? The icon files are kept in /Applications/Safari, so using Disc Utility to repair these might solve the problem.
Also it's possible that some temporary memory cache is corrupt - so you did try a restart? Often the simplest explanation catches people out. ![]() The other possibility is that the hard drive is too full, and the system is struggling to find space for the icons, and things are going wrong here. You should have about 15% of your drive free. If none of the above works then maybe Safari->Preferences->Reset Safari is your only option. Then it may have to be a reinstallation of Safari. |

Have you tried clicking the little button on the top right side of the Safari window?

It turned out to be the file permissions. Disk Utility solved the problem. Thanks to all who helped. Steve
