G5 Will Not Start Up

My G5 1.8GHZ gets to the blue screen and then freezes.
I restarted using the System CD, Tried to repair disc and received the message: the underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)

I could not repair the Drive. Did I lose everything on that drive?

You may be able to get most of it back by installing it as a secondary drive and getting a good drive to reload the system on. Past that, there are third party vendors who make a fortune off of scavanging data off of corrupted drives. (And, yes, that means they charge a fortune also.) If you do have to go that route you might want to ask around and see what luck other people have had with them.

This is, of course, assuming it's your disk that's bad, and not part of your Board. Best way to check that out would be to either get a different disk and try to format it.

Do I need to install another internal drive and then install OSX onto it and try to retrieve data? Can I isstall OSX on an external Drive connected via USB or Firewire?

Does the internal drive show up in the DiskUtility as a device at least ?

If not, the logic board of the drive has probably gone south.

Does the drive that won't mount spin up ?

The drive 160GB internal drive does show up in Tech Tool Pro and it is performing a surface scan as we speak. I dont think it is spinning up.
If I perform a restart, I get to the blue screen and then it freezes.

Its about 3/4 finished scanning. I am hopeful it will mount. Once (if) it mounts, I am going to backup the data and reformat the drive. If that the correct thing to do?

In a word, Yes to the backup.

You might want to think about a new drive, though.
How much of it were you using?
A 100 GB drive, if it's big enough, will generally be more dependable than a 160.

I'd go for trying to pull your preferences first, home directory second, and work up from there.
Definately wouldn't do a full clone.

1
scrape your data off the drive first thing.

2
run disk utility repair.

3
if it doesn't find anything wrong, next fix permissions.

4
try to boot off the repaired drive.

If all that works out ok, cloning will produce a working copy.
Reformatting only makes sense, if there are newly developped bad sectors.

More probably than not, it's just a slightly corrupt file-system and everything should be fine again.

As for new disks, I am unaware of any 100 GB 3,5" disks.
Any size appropriate for your needs will do. The best Gigabyte/buck ratio is with 160 or 200 GB drives now.

If you're concerned about disk failures, building a RAID 1 will take care of that. It won't protect you from fs-corruption.

Will Erasing and reformatting the drive solve the drive problem? Do I need to replace it? Will Apple cover it? I ahave apple care. How can I tell if it is the mother board. i have had problems in the past starting this computer up.

Give DiskWarrior a try. TTP's directory reconstruction always crashes on my system too. DiskWarrior does a better job and doesn't crash.

I agree Diskwarrior is best for disk corruption.

If its a partition table issue then its considered software and not covered under warranty. Wiping and reloading it would fix the problem.

If its a physical problem with the drive then yes it would need to be replaced and the warranty will cover it (mechanical failure, bad blocks, etc.)

If you hold down the option key while running diskwarrior the rebuild key turns into scavange.
