Single user mode?

What happens if you try to boot in single-user mode (command-S at startup) and then run disk check (fsck -y, I think, but the instructions are there on the screen in single-user mode)?

Thanks Rob.

I tried booting into single-user mode (Command-S at re-boot) and was successful at fsck then mount. The first time this mess happened I hosed the hard drive. Last night I carefully removed the sym-links and recreated a couple of sym-links. Then removed some of the IntlDataCache.* files. Rebooted into my old system. I still can't understand what triggers the setup assistant to re-run. (???) I'd like to get to the bottom of this but Apple hasn't helped yet so I remain in the dark.
