Password to install programs forgotten

I am helping out a friend load some software. When it asks for the password, they do not remember it. Is there a way to reset it?

Boot to the appropriate MacOS X install CD (or Software Restore disc too probably), and there is an option there to do so, I believe.

More specifically, boot form the OS X installer CD and then you will see in the Install menu at the top the option to reset passwords.
