Norton Internet Security 3.0 won't uninstall/install!

Norton Internet Security 3.0 For Mac won't uninstall or install.
I don't know why I have this problem because its been working for almost a
year with no problems but now its just decided to stop working.
I havent upgraded anything. Its strange.
Also I dont know why but when I click on Software Update,
click update and download the software 'MacOSXUpdate10.3.8'
it just doesnt update and ends in an error:

'There were errors installing the software
Please try installing again.'

And thats what I get from Norton aswell, i am unable to install or uninstall
it via the CD. I can drag it to the recycle bin. But once I have done that
I have no antivirus software, and I cant install it because The installation
will just end with an error.

I don't know what the problem is and theres more...
If I have 'Norton Internet Security 3.0 For Mac' installed on my mac
I am unable to access the internet. I am connect through Ethernet
to a router and then to a cable modem. I havent had anyproblems before.

So yes. If I have my antivirus software running on my
iMac
1.25 GHz PowerPC G4
256 MB DDR SDRAM
20 inch TFT flat screen
I am unable to have a connection (my other computer connected
to the router works fine.)
But if i drag most of the norton files I can find to the trash then
once I ave restarted I do get a connection. But then I am unable to install
the 'Norton Internet Security 3.0 For Mac' because it ends with errors.

(Also liveUpdate doesnt work no matter what is installed)

I'm not sure if I have made this clear, but its the type of thing thats hard
to explain, but so amazingly annoying!

I dont know what to do. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help.

Thanks
Oli

I suspect your problems here are directly related to your problems in this thread.

Have you tried the uninstaller off the Norton Installer CD?

What troubleshooting steps have you tried?

When I run the CD and the uninstall.
After following the wizard I end up with this error message.

'Errors occured uninstalling the software.'

I've tried other uninstallers.

Just to make sure, are you an admin on the box? Have you booted from the OS X Installer CD/DVD and run the Disk Utility to repair the hard drive? Have you repaired permissions from the Disk Utility in /Applications/Utilities?

Hi.
I've dun all that you've said.
But still I am unable to print (in any application) install/uninstall norton
and or MacOSXUpdate 10.3.8.

I really don't know whats wrong.
Is the only way of fixing this to restore my iMac, using system restore?

Thanks.

When I go through software update and download the MacOSXUpdate,
when downloading/installing i get this message:

'The update "Mac OS X Update" could not
be verified and expanded correctly.

Make sure you have permission to write to /private/
tmp/501/TemporaryItems/
com.apple.SoftwareUpdate, then try again.'

So far it looks like some stuff Norton installed systemwide is b0rked.

If you think you can dike it out, do so. That would require to identify the kernel-extensions and startup-items that cause the problem. rm only one file you shouldn't and your Mac won't boot.

The safest option for you would be to backup your data, flatten the disk and re-install. The combination of screwed-up permissions and a more-than-usually broken Norton install would require a seasoned troubleshooter to sort out.

Lightbulb New Symantec un-installer and how-to-info web address

This link was updated Feb. 15, 2005, and when I checked it out a week ago contained the link for downloading Symantec's latest un-installer for Mac. Click this link.

I copied the url from a thread in the Symantec-support forum at www.macfixit.com. The tech support people there are very responsive and helpful.

Respectfully, Norm

Hey.
I still haven't figured this out yet and
yes I still have all my rubbish problems.

Except now all my Norton files are in the trash
i can access the internet and anything internet related.

But.........
I keep having to transfer my files over via my network
to print them out on my p.c with a worse printer.
Thats just one of them.
I wan't those updates in 'Software Update'
but i can't get them!

I think when i have some time, i will have to
backup everything and start again.

Oh well

I think that would be your best bet, and in the long run, far easier for all involved.

Here's a link to Symantec's original NIS for Mac uninstaller. It's worked for me on a couple of stubborn systems that originally had NIS 2.0, and upgraded to 3.0 via live update.

I'm still working on it.
But my main trouble at the moment is my printer.

I can't print anything from any application.
I just get an error or it doesn't recognise that I have clicked print.

Thanks again,

Seen a similar problem

Are you sure you did a repair permissions?

I saw a similar problem on my parent's 20" Imac G5.

Norton Anti-virus had a problem during startup. Timbuktu couldn't
run an didn't show up in the menu bar. No printing from any application.

I tried to uninstall/reinstall all three things and all had "An unexpected
error occured".

I did a repair permissions and it had to remake the simlink for /tmp
after that everything was fine.

See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107396

Heres what I got today when I ran Disk Utility, Verify Disk Permissions.

Verify permissions for “Macintosh HD”
Determining correct file permissions.
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util. New permissions are 33261
We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/jobs. New uid is 1
We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/spool. New uid is 1
The privileges have been verified or repaired on the selected volume

Permissions verification complete

and heres what I got when I ran Disk Utility, Repair Disk Permissions.

Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
Determining correct file permissions.
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util. New permissions are 33261
We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/jobs. New uid is 1
We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/spool. New uid is 1
The privileges have been verified or repaired on the selected volume

Permissions repair complete

I then attempted to print something and bang, no go. Nothing happens.
I don't know if this helps anything. If theres a way I can fix it without having to archive and reinstall everthing it would be much more convinient. I do know that spool maybe something to do with my printer (Epson stylus photo r200) but someone must know the answer to this..........

Thanks.

The error messages you got are not alarming.

Unless you post a detailed story of what you did in what order and what does work and what does not right now, I don't think you'll be able to get useful hints.

Also show us the output of the following terminal commands:

ps aux

and

ls -l /System/Library/Extensions

Anyway, given the level of debugging-know-how exhibited so far, backing up your data, then re-installing the system is probably your best bet to get a working setup fast.

Norton Security Updater

I updated to OS X 10.3.9 and now I cannot do LivUpdate on Nortons. I just keep getting a message that "There was an error performing the update".

I have repaired disk permissions - no effect.

The Nortons is version 3, with the Antivirus verision 90.0.3(6).

Safari is intermittently opening and then crashing, too.

Any advice?
