Which program for mail? And the news

Well, after the recent threads I think we're all quite clear there is quite an interesting animal world out there, between safaris and foxes on fires.

But what about email? Which is your winner? And why?

If you read newsgroups, which is the killer application for you?

___

I use Mail, have never explored any alternatives in Mac (used to be Thunderbird in the wintel world and -gag- I have to use Lotus Notes at work which will, I am certain of that, get me a ticket to paradise).

News, I used to and liked some groups, just haven't gotten around to it yet and would be interested in reading what the more experienced people use.

It's not only about the browers...

I've used Thunderbird on Mac, as well as Entourage. There are probably others I've explored, but none left a strong enough impression for me to remember. I'm satisfied with Mail App and don't see much reason to use anything else. It's just the right balance between necessary features, and bloat -- just like Safari.

As for newsreaders, I've been a fan of Unison ever since its release.

I use Mail.app for my .mac email and Entourage for my ISP mail address, both work great.

For newsreaders, I like Entourage. I've tried Unison, Mozilla and one called something like MT54? and keep going back to Entourage.

I'm a committed Eudora user for email. Nothing else comes close; I've got almost all the email I've ever sent or received and I can find anything I'm looking for very quickly; my spam goes straight into the trash via filters that I've set up myself. I send and receive from several different internet-access situations & SMTP/POP servers including two DSL ISPs, a dialup ISP, two workplace static IPs, and I can sent out using my own SendMail capabilities as SMTP, and for any of them can send as one of the others, with the From header and the Reply-to header shifted accordingly.

My newgroup reader of choice is Hogwasher. It's very good for letting you set up a single "subscription" which actually spans several different newsgroups and even several different newsgroup servers/providers, and it has some impressively powerful filters of its own. Combines fragments of binary files even if it has to snag one piece from one server and another piece from a totally different server.

I'm a long-time Eudora-user as well, it clearly was the first decent mailer back then.
However, if they don't get IMAP to work better than it does now, I will switch, probably to Thunderbird. It's not because Eudoras head-developper thinks that IMAP sux that it should suffer from a shoddy implementation.

MacSoup is quite a beautiful newsreader, especially the graphical thread-representation is extremely cute.

I've been using Eudora since Steve Dorner's Version 1. I've weakened a few times and tries others, but always end up going back.

I use NewsNetWire Pro for RSS feeds and find it's three pane layout the most convenient. NNW Pro orignally included blog editing software I liked and this is now spun off as a separate applicating: Mars Edit. I like both.

I've used Entourage and Thunderbird extensively. Entourage was just too big for my needs, and although Thunderbird is great, it's particularly slow in some areas, and it also doesn't integrate with Apple's Addressbook, so I did some research and I've just recently switched to Gyazmail which is smaller download, snappier, integrates with addressbook, and which is quite pretty too! So far I'm quite impressed with it. Also check out Gnumail.

Thank you for your suggestions. Gyazmail is nice, but I couldn't find info on the price anywhere. What do you mean by snappier? I can't see any difference. What do you think the advantages are over mail? I have an issue with the SMTP servers, it keeps mixing them up and trying to use mac for my POP mail, so I get error messages when sending, which is the reason why I am asking.

Gnumail would not import any mailbox even following instructions, so its life span was quite short.

Will try the readers too, when I find the time, but the leads are very useful.

I've been using Eudora for years and see no reason to cham=nge. It works great, and the upgrades always go without a hitch. It takes care of Spam with SpamSieve, nothing gets byt once it's trained.

Gyazmail also works well, but not as many features. It's $18.00.

ooops, I didn't even realise there was a 40 day tryout limit on Gyazmail! Must be coming up pretty soon for me! As far as being snappier, there are certain operations in Thunderbird that seem to take forever, such as when you click on "Write" in order to compose a new email, it can take around 8 seconds to bring up the window. Also I think Gyazmail is quicker checking servers, and I prefer it bringing up the progress window when checking mail, rather than displaying it in a status bar.

I haven't had any problems with SMPT server settings, you can set individual SMPT servers for each POP account in preferences.

I, too, have been using Eudora since the OS 8 days. It have never failed me, is very flexible and configurable. I use it for my two email account (both POP accouunts), my .Mac account and isp based account. Works seamlessly with both accounts and also with both my image management applications, iView MediaPro and iPhoto.

Eudora. It has so many advantages over everything else that I won't begin to list them -- except html rendering.

Having the good design sense to have as little to do with HTML email as possible is a Eudora plus in my book

Hogwasher also gets kudos for turning up its nose at HTML-formatted newsgroup postings (and is that ever an abomination!)

AHunter, Eudora for Windows has good html rendering. For those who want html bulletins and emails, proper rendering is a plus; my .Mac and Apple eNews newsletters are totally mangled by Eudora and have to be read using my web browser. I'm having a hard time seeing how a poorly developed feature is really a good thing.

Opera

Though the browser isnt the best, I really like the Opera mail client. It has virtual folders (sorely lacking in Mail.app), automatic mailing list recognition, and great address book integration (unlike Thunderbird). If they improve the browser, I may use it full-time.
