XBox Live - Internet Sharing
Hello,
I have a reasonably unique scenario. I'm trying to network my Xbox Live via Internet Sharing. I'm not much of a networking person but I'll try to explain as best as I can. My network runs of SBCGlobal DSL service. Modem to Router: <SBC Global Modem> ---cat 5--- <Linksys 614 Wireless G router> Router to Mac: <Linksys 614 Wireless G router> (((Wireless through Airport Card))) <Dual G4> Mac to Xbox: <Dual G4> ---cat 5--- <Xbox> I have internet sharing set up correctly through the System Preferences under the Sharing folder. I know it's ghetto...let's try to get past the crappy setup I have which forces me to use Internet Sharing. First off, I know my cable is fine. The cable is detected properly between the Mac and the Xbox, so we can skip the cable during this troubleshoot. My router address is: 192.168.1.1 (default linksys address) My AirPort (which is connected fine) has the following settings (Using DHCP): IP:192.168.1.4 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Router:192.168.1.1 My Built-in Ethernet (which is flagged with a yellow status icon) has the following settings (Using DHCP) IP:169.254.12.138 Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0 Router: blank Xbox: IP Addresses: Automatic DNS Servers: Automatic PPPoE Settings: Off Advanced: Automatic ------------------------------- So basically I have internet sharing on now and when everything is plugged and ready to go, when I attempt to connect to Xbox live, the Xbox begins its process of determining its network settings. o Cable (checks fine) o IP Address (fails) o DNS (doesn't get this far) o Xbox Live! (doesn't get this far) So what am I doing wrong? There have been a couple of threads on the issue but no one seems to know enough to have a working configuration. There have been some talk about using Brickhouse or IPNetShareX. IPNetShareX doesn't open for me under 10.3.6. Brickhouse works but I haven't a clue what to do with it. Any information at all would be helpful. Thanks, Jerome |

I just did the same thing (substitute powerbook for G4) for my brother. The xbox seems to have difficulty obtaining an address from the dhcp server that is started on the Mac as part of the 'share my internet' process. I don't think it's necessary, but I set the ethernet port to "Configure IPV4: Off". I then started internet sharing and checked the IP assigned to the ethernet port (in terminal.app, type "ifconfig en0" [zero, not a capital-o] and it will return the info about the config of the built-in ethernet. On my machine it returns "inet 192.168.2.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255". I believe OSX always uses 192.168.2.1 but it would be best to check rather than just assuming.
On the xbox, set IP Configuration: Manual IP: 192.168.2.2 Mask: 255.255.255.0 Router/Gateway: 192.168.2.1 [or the address returned from the ifconfig command above if it's different] DNS Configuration: Manual [enter the IPs of the dns servers provided by SBC] They should be in the documentation and likely in your router config. If you can't find them, type "dig" in terminal.app and after a bunch of text scrolls by, you'll have a line starting with "SERVER" near the bottom, the IP address in that line is the DNS server your computer is using, so you can enter the same in the xbox settings. PPPoE Settings: Off Advanced: Automatic You should now be able to connect to xbox-live. Rob |

right i've had a good bash at trying to fix this but am still getting nowhere! i've turned off IPv4 and set IPv6 to automatic. i've switched on internet sharing and ticked share with built in ethernet. i've then set my xbox as above
ip 192.168.2.2 mask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.2.1 and i got my dns server as above and entered that into primary and alternative dns. i still get check cable. also the ethernet cable is red and it says cable is not plugged in. i used this ethernet cable at work to see was it ok and it worked. is there anything i could be missing. please help!! i'm mad to get online and play halo 2 online!! |

I've read somewhere just recently that you need to connect the xbox and mac with a crossover cable. Once you do that and manually give the DNS IP address, then it should work. Hope it helps... Nitz |

Still no joy
I understand all that was written and have tried it all but the xbox still refuses to find my IP address.
The closest i came was when i entered the "ifconfig en0" number into the IP address and the xbox responded by telling me that the IP address was already in use. This is my network: cable modem--->Airport Express(via ethernet) Airport Express--->iBook G4 & PowerPC G4 PowerPC G4---->xbox live (via ethernet cable) The internet works on both mac's. I connected the xbox straight to the modem and it worked perfectly. It's only when i try to do it via the built-in ethernet connection(on either ibook or PowerPC) that i get problems. Also which Settings am i meant to be looking at for the IP,Mask & Gateway numbers? The Airport internet settings or Network Settings under the system preferences? I'll try to phone the apple tech support tommorrow(sunday) to see if they can help but i doubt it. So any response would be v.much appreciated. |

Connecting to XBOX Live
Hey, I was able to get a working connection using my iBook (early 2004) and Internet Sharing. I used the hints posted by Perrin. However, I didn't mess around with my Ethernet port at all. All I did was connect a regular ethernet cable, no need for a crossover cable, from my ethernet port to the port on the Xbox. Checked the IP assigned to the ethernet port (in terminal.app, type "ifconfig en0" [zero, not a capital-o] and it will return the info about the config of the built-in ethernet. On my machine it returns "inet 192.168.2.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255". I believe OSX always uses 192.168.2.1 but it would be best to check rather than just assuming.
This is how my Xbox looks (thanks Perrin): IP Configuration: Manual IP: 192.168.2.2 Mask: 255.255.255.0 Router/Gateway: 192.168.2.1 [or the address returned from the ifconfig command above if it's different] DNS Configuration: Manual [enter the IPs of the dns servers provided by SBC] They should be in the documentation and likely in your router config. If you can't find them, type "dig" in terminal.app and after a bunch of text scrolls by, you'll have a line starting with "SERVER" near the bottom, the IP address in that line is the DNS server your computer is using, so you can enter the same in the xbox settings. PPPoE Settings: Off Advanced: Automatic Also, this is what I did. I went into my iBook and found the MAC address my airport was using and coppied that MAC address to the address mapping feature in the Xbox. That said and done I was able to connect without any further problems. Just make sure you are using the IP, Mask, and Router that terminal returns when you ask it per instructions above. |

Where to look
I usually find most of my information for the IP, Router, etc. in the System Preferences, Network, Show: Airport, TCP/IP. This is where I got my information, plus from Terminal.app to set up my Xbox.

I too am having major problems with Xbox live.
I have followed all the instructions in this thread but am getting DNS errors. I have even tried turning off the firewall. I have USB Modem > G3 iMac 10.3.7 > Crossover > Xbox The first two steps work using the info from the thread but the third gives errors when using the info from my ISP Wanadoo! HELP!!! Xbox live support doesn't support Macs & Wanadoo help line doesn't support Xbox live, I might have to buy a £60 router... ![]() Edit: Right - by putting the Mac's address as the DNS server (192.etc) I can get past that part but it still won't let me on to the live sysatem to register!! XBOX 360 Live
I'm having the same problem.
I want to connect my XBOX 360 to my IMAC G5 trough the XBOX wireless network adapter and the airport on my MAC. Do I need something more? My XBOX connects to the mac but when he gets at IP address i get the message failed. When I put "ifconfig en0" i get the following inet 81.82.159.138 netmask 0xfffff800 broadcast 81.82.159.255 ether 00:11:24:ce:d0:be So it's a lot different than what i read here (maybe cause I'm from Europe???) When I put DIG I get SERVER: 195.130.131.3#53(195.130.131.3) Can someone guide me trough this proces, I've tried a lil bit of everything by now. Thanks in advance |

hey big I was having the same problem (on ps2).
I put up a how to on my website. This thread helped me a little, but I needed to do some other stuff to make my connection work. Hope it helps! (you're probably going to want to set your DNS to manual) http://www.collegegamer.org/features...pwireless.html |

Thanks all! This thread plus the collegegamer website helped me get my 13 year old son up and running on xbox live. He thinks I'm a pretty smart Mom--for now.
We have an airport network (snow) with an emac and macmini sharing a DSL connection. I followed Perrin's suggestions and the instructions on the website but made little headway at first. Turning on internet sharing on the mini was a good suggestion. What I didn't understand but figured out through trial and error was that the ending numbers in the IP addresses and in the DNS numbers changed depending upon where the xbox was in the network chain. The IP address on the mac mini was 192.168.2.2 but when I entered 192.168.2.3 as the IP Address in the xbox we made progress in our configuration. When I entered 205.171.4.65 and 205.171.5.65 as the DNS server when I manually configured DHCP on the mac mini we were finally able to log on. Just sharing what worked for us in case it helps someone else. Thanks again. |

HI, I have also a problem connecting to XBL through my Mac.
I tried following the instructions on the thread but the connection gets stuck on IP Address verification. However, I was able to get past that by playing around with my Ethernet settings, but it still gets stuck on DNS, here is what I've done so far: I manually changed my Ethernet settings to: IP Address: 83.141.64.193 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Router: 83.141.64.193 In the Xbox360 settings I entered the IP address my service provider gave me, and the above settings for everything else. For DNS settings I entered the ones from my Service Provider as well, I also entered those DNS settings in my Ethernet setting. This gets me past IP, but it still gets stuck on DNS. If I connect dirrectly to the modem the connection works fine. The ethernet cable I'm using is the one that came with my Premium Xbox 360. Can someone please help? |

I am having a similar problem to EtC, i have connected the xbox to my mac via the supplied ethernet cable and am sharing my airport connection a belkin 54g router.
The IP resolves fine, it just always gets stuck on DNS. Ive tried the DNS settings from my router , listed as primary and secondary DNS and ive also tried the server line from dig, which just gives me the addy of my router - it obviously isnt forwarding DNS requests... any suggestions ? |
