Jaguar DiskWarrior Boot Disk

I have the downloaded version of DiskWarrior 3 and tried unsuccessfully to make a boot disk for my G4. Is there anyone out there who knows how? Thanks!

From the Before You Buy page...

http://www.alsoft.com/beforeyoubuy.html

If you are purchasing DiskWarrior

• Repairing your usual startup disk requires that you start up from another disk. In order to use the download copy of DiskWarrior, you will need to start up from another Mac OS X 10.2.1 or higher disk. You will then need to run a copy of DiskWarrior from a disk that is not the disk you are repairing. (The DiskWarrior download does not include the Apple System files necessary to create a startup CD.)

I used a program called BootCD. It’s shareware. http://www.charlessoft.com/
You can add the Diskwarrior program to the boot disk. You run DW program by draging it to the ram disk that is created with BootCD.

The boot CD takes a long long time to load.

Good luck. Geno

DiskWarrior Boot Disk

I thought so but I was hoping I made a mistake. My G4 crashed Saturday when I was using Netscape and I have been trying to get it up and running since then. I actually made a boot disk with BootCD and added DiskWarrior. I was able to get DiskWarrior to run and was even able to view my hardrive. Unfortunately I go a message that said "Master does not support S.M.A.R.T." Bummer!

Anyway, thanks for the info. I am in the process of gettting TechTool from Micromat. Maybe that will do it. Thanks!

SMART (system management analysis recovery technology) is old and busted. It really does not do anything beneficial, and I have seen it report problems when there are really no problems. I have ran full surface scans on hardrives, along with data stress tests, drive mechanics tests, etc on drives that have had SMART failures, and you know what? The drive passed all the tests. This has happened more than once.

Sorry to go off on a rant there, but your problem may just be a hosed file system. Do you have a firewire HD? load an OS and disk warrior off it, then boot off it via target mode? Do you have another mac with firewire? Connect both machines and boot your G4 via target mode onto that other mac and then run disk warrior. If you have access to another mac there is a way to make a boot cd from the terminal using commands, I have never used it but I hear its a bit buggy.

Fortunately my iMac 600 has firewire. I just bought the G4 last month and luckily I hadn't sold the iMac yet. Thanks for the SMART info. You are super!

ps...
I just check out your great site. What a great resource!

First I would like to apologize for reopening this old thread but considering I found it on the first page of my Google search I think I need to correct a little misinformation in it.

First of all SMART stands for "Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology". It is not "old and busted" and is very useful for what it does. The purpose of SMART is not to recovering your data and has nothing to do with repairing problems on your drive. The purpose of SMART is to be an early warning system for possible drive failure.

SMART basically works by storing a log of all the performance statistics of your drive. When those statistics reach a certain point the drive reaches a 'pre-failure' status, which means that the statistic has reached a level that the drive manufacture decided was beyond the normal operating levels for the drive. It doesn't mean that the drive will die tomorrow and not having any errors doesn't guarantee that it won't. SMART will warn you about approximately 70% of impending drive failures, but it is still just a warning.

Here is an example or a SMART report from I drive that I am about to replace in one of our servers: (I couldn't figure out how to get it to display in a fixed width font so if you can't read the table copy it to a text editor and view it in Courier)

I always disable SMART in the BIOS on all my PCs, because it can also cause problems. I have seen it report incorrect errors. I have seen it call a drive bad, when really the partition was just hosed. I have seen it interfere with bootable apps.

So, it has its ups and downs.
