iTunes: too many Genre

I have a huge Genre list and most of them are not used in my library.
Do you know how to remove the unnecessary text?

just go into iTunes and select edit in the menu bar and go to view options or hit "apple a" and it will take you to the view menu, you can chose what you see and what you don't.

too many Genre: example

Thanks for your answer.
What I mean is that I have in the Genre list to many items (about 120!)and most of them are not used. I do not want to remove songs from my directory, I want to reduce the ugly genre list.
see attached picture.

Here's my suggestion:

Under general preferences, select "Show Genre While Browsing". That way you can select multple genres by holding the Apple key. Select groups of genres you want to consolidate into one and get info. (Apple-i) Change the genre for all items and it will change all those multiple items into one.

Thanks Jomima, but this is not what I want.
I've just edit my previous picture to better explain.I hope so :-))
As you can see, the genre Classica is not present in my library, but is still present in the Info genre list: I want to purge and reduce the huge info genre list to the real genre present in my Libtary.

Then you must have surely a file which has "Classica" as the genre.
What you can do is, set up a SmartPlaylist with the Genre you want to get rid off. Thsi will find you the files with the "wrong" genres. You can then edit the files and they will resort. The "wrong" genre will also disappear from the choices.
Some genres are standard and will not disappear.

George is writing from Italy. He is probably running the localized version of OS X in Italian. "Classica" is one of the standard genres in the Italian language version of iTunes and cannot be killed by simply removing any song which uses that genre. He is asking whether there is any way to remove the standard genre names. I'd like to do that myself, but have been unable to figure out how.

$ strings /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Localized.rsrc | grep -i classica\|punk
Punkin
Classical
Instrumental
Punk
Acid Punk
Punk Rock
Classical
Classical

/Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Localized.rsrc

copy that file somewhere safe. open the copy with ResFool

in there is a resource group, iST# , and in that group, 9001 Genres.

it's binary data. editing it is ill-advised, at your own risk.

Thank you sir. Looks pretty much like one of those many things that are not worth the trouble even though they can be done... but it's nice you bothered.

gotcha!

As you suggested I've found the resource Classica in the Italian resource!
but now what you suggest is little bit cryptic:

I'll try to modify this resource on another volume that is my mirror backup.
Thanks a lot to jhansen and mervTormel!

Delete the resources

Once I got into the menu you are showing, I simply deleted all of the genres - then the only genres that are extant are the ones YOU create - most of my genres are combo genres so that made it much easier for me.
Did the same in the second genre resource. So far it hasn't negatively affected the way it runs...

Hi and welcome to the forum. With that said, may I ask why you are digging up threads that are really old and outdated? This thread was started in June, 2004. I'd hope the answer was clear by now. . You've resurrected 3 threads on the same issue. All of which are outdated.

In there I see no resource group, "iST#". The only resource group beginning with "i" is "iTXT."

Please, where in iTunes 6 is the aforementioned Genres resource?

Maybe, but nevertheless my query references iTunes 6. Has someone a relevant answer to offer?

This is some info from when this thread started (over 2 years ago)
Will this info help you at all?
There's at least 3 different versions of iTunes represented in this short thread, and information about genres from one version may, or may not still be relevant.
If you have 'bad' genres, this above hint may get rid of the bad ones, and has to be done one at a time, because the genres are in the music library, with each song/album

Really, all I would like to know is the location of the genre resource in vers 6. I have no "bad" genres, but I would like to alter what I do have.

I don't plan updating to 7 until VolumeLogic works with it, which may be a while, so where they are in 7 doesn't matter as much to me right now as where they are in 6.
