i have a script for panther, that reports spam, bounces and deletes it, unfortunately it wont work in jaguar
has anyone made any simple scripts in jaguar that...
bounce selected messages and/or
delete selected messages ?
also, ive tried using a simple script in the rules section of mail but it just doesnt work, do scripts work and if so, what would i be doing wrong?

Bouncing mail is pointless. 99% of the spam comes from bogus users, so you're bouncing to an address that doesn't exist. This adds further to the useless bandwidth waste.

The current version of OSX mail has a built-in intellegent spam filter that is worth the price of the upgrade all by itself. Does everything you are trying but no work is required on your behalf other than turning it on.

there is a script "Bounce Mail" that I found. It was written by Evan Chaney, but I don't recall the website. It has only been tested on X.3 (Panther), but looking at it, I don't see why it wouldn't work for Jaguar. If you do some searching, you should find it.

If not, I could send you a copy.

Best,
darin

OK, whatever floats your boat..

But seriously, any perceived reduction is spam from bouncing is a misperception. No legitimate UBE spammer sends from a real email address. If the email address does actually exist somewhere, no one reads any replies. By their very nature, spammers are unscrupulous, so I think you're fooling yourself by thinking you can bounce your unwanted emails and a spammer will think "oh, so and so's email doesn't exist anymore. I'll be sure and take them off my list!" I see a lot of spam, consistently I see reports of spam that is auto-bounced by our mail server because it's addresses to bogus email addresses or users who are no longer with our department. I've been seeing the same addresses targeted for the last 4 years.
Finally, before I get off my soap box, your bouncing mails needlessly adds to the tax on the bandwidth of the internet. Stop slowing down my internet!

some spammers do seem to use genuine addresses, they are just trying to market stuff i dont want and have never asked for. those are the ones that hopefully will think my address no longer exsists.

True. And I'd like to confess that I don't use the script I refered to above. Auto-bounce is largely (perhaps not totally) useless. Moreover, it highlights the problem by returning the spam with an "undeliverable" message appended from some mailserver. All very annoying.

I do, however, occasionally use the bounce option. Most commonly when some dork at the university submits my name to a listserv that spews out crap. At least here locally, two bounced messages (undeliverable) get my address removed from the list.

My 2¢.
