Has anyone solved this riddle by hook or crook? The problem is more than a nuisance. It's cooking my Mac.
![]() PS, I installed the temp menu item AFTER I was experiencing the netstat race daily. |

Is this a clue to the "Host Name" problem? From the crash.log, 3 minutes apart. TWO different host names...(my appleshare name is 'ginger')

Do you have a non-standard /etc/hosts file? I.e. have you edited your /etc/hosts file to add other hostnames? Others have found that reverting to the standard /etc/hosts seems to make the problem go away. Otherwise, if you edit /etc/hostconfig as described above (be sure to make a backup!) to specify your HOSTNAME there, the problem should not occur. |

I don't have a non-standard hostfile that I know of (the date modified for "/etc/hosts" is Dec 8, 2003).
I do have two "/etc/hostconfig" files. One modified Yesterday 10:14 am, another named "/etc/hostconfig~" modified Sep 1, 4:05 pm. I haven't done any editing of either. And they both seem to have the exact same content. I'm on a home network, what should I specify as my hostname? What is the format? Can I just put my appletalk "ginger.local" ? Or is it just "ginger" and the the ".local" is added automatically? Last edited by FauxCaster; 09-03-2004 at 12:31 PM. |

I'm not sure on the .local question, but I think you should just put HOSTNAME=ginger |

Actually have the netstat process running taking 30% of CPU%, I attempt to Force Quit and it asks for Admin password, so it must be legit.
{update: no it was crashed, by the time I quite everything else it hogged even more CPU%} However doing a netstat -rn in Terminal results in Bad Access etc. Netstat parent process sh (10255) sh (10255) parent process sh (10253) sh (10253) parent process configd (86) configd (86) parent process mach_init (2) mach_init (2) parent process init (1) init (1) parent process kernel task (0) Running 4 Folding@homes under InCrease, EyeTV, DVD player, iTunes (visuals & music), Activity Monitor, Marine Aquarium as desktop (under BackLight2), XResourceGraphX, Address Book, Safari. I run both my CPU’s full bore 24/7 (Folding@home) and my temps are as follows Dual 2 Ghz G5 ATI 9800 Pro SE 23" Cinema Room temperature 74ºF (My G5 likes it below 75ºF) CPU A 112ºF CPU B 103ºF U3 Heatsink 130ºF DriveBay 83.3ºF Mlb Inlet Amb 82ºF Mlb Max6690 Amb 95.2ºF Backside 106ºF Very consistent, all day, all night. Been average with others reports. FauxCaster, I’ve noticed it looks like your using Hardware Monitor, the programer has found a bug that is causing KP’s it may interest those looking for the netstat bug as well as yourself. http://g5support.com/group/viewtopic.php?p=3822#3822 If your running a Dual 2 Ghz or a Dual 1.8, I’d say your temperatures are very high or your room temps are very high. You may want to get your sensors/fan calibrated. If a Dual 2.5 Ghz then perhaps it’s acceptable, that chip is supposed to be hotter. Best Regards. Last edited by Sailfish; 09-04-2004 at 01:10 AM. |

After Force Quitting the netstat process 4 times today
I finally got the invisible system owned hostconfig file changed and a duplicate safe and sound. Since I'm not all that Terminal handy I used Textedit and Xupport's browser feature (see's all files) along with changing the Ownership permissions temporarily. Many thanks to the folks here for the great solution. Will inform of the progress.

I've had no more netstat problems after manually setting the HOSTNAME in /etc/hostconfig
Thank go to the great group of sleuths and experts here at macosxhints! 3 days and nothing has hogged my CPU. |

Reverted back hostconfig to -AUTOMATIC-
Updated w/Security Update 2004-07-09 and no hanging netstat process as two days now. (other problems with the update, websites not rendering, FTP access is broke) Anone else still having the hanging netstat after reverting their hostconfig file and updating to 2004-07-09? |

What's the latest on this???
I'm just checking to see if anyone has a definitive answer on this one yet. I just reread the last half dozen or so posts, and it sounds like some of you have had success doing some edits that I'm not Terminal-savvy enough to fully understand. Could someone post back detailed instructions about just what seems to work, and how exactly to accomplish it?
Many thanks, John-o |

You might want to look at this old macosxhints article for tips on editing /etc/hostconfig:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...10413024152602 But don't trust the contents of the hostconfig file that is listed there - that article is very old and some things may have been added to the hostconfig file. To execute the fix that I proposed above, you merely edit the /etc/hostconfig file (e.g. using the 'pico' editor as described in that macosxhints article) and change the HOSTNAME line to specify whatever hostname you want - see the example above in this thread where someone wanted to make their hostname "ginger". |

Anyone ever figure this out?
Hey guys...
My roomate and I seem to be encountering this same netstat problem. Or at least... it seems similar. We've noticed that often times he couldn't access my share on the network... when he would attempt to connect it would freeze his finder and he'd have to relaunch it. To get it so that he could connect, I had to change my computer's name in the file sharing pref's. Then it would work for awhile. Right after I did this, we happened to notice netstat using craploads of CPU. (We happened to have the activity monitor open because we are rendering stuff in Maya on tight deadlines and need every bit of CPU.) That brought me to your thread. Before I went tweaking things in files on his computer, I wanted to see if anyone had a better solution yet. The only thing that I could think of that might cause it is the Application 'Net Monitor' that I have running on MY computer. On the developer's site it says he uses NetStat to monitor the ehternet interface... But again the problem happened on his comp and never mine. Any new thoughts? |

Mine has been quiet for a while, but recently netstat started quitting on me again. It's still a mystery.

Still seeing this
I am seeing the hung netstat process on a Dual 2.5.
Completely standard, unmodified, clean 10.3.6 installation. /etc/hostconfig and /etc/hosts unmodified. netstat -rn enters infinite loop in terminal (prints "netstat: kvm_read: Bad address" endlessly). I have seen a few netstat crashes over the last few days too. The reports all look like this (just imagine the last "p_tree" line repeated over 500 times before the crash): Command: netstat Path: /usr/sbin/netstat Version: ??? (???) PID: 23918 Thread: 0 Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001) Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS (0x0001) at 0xbf7fffe0 Thread 0 Crashed: 0 libSystem.B.dylib 0x900069f0 __sfvwrite + 0x10 1 libSystem.B.dylib 0x90006df0 __sprint + 0x30 2 libSystem.B.dylib 0x90006908 __vfprintf + 0x3168 3 libSystem.B.dylib 0x90047208 __sbprintf + 0x68 4 libSystem.B.dylib 0x90003860 __vfprintf + 0xc0 5 libSystem.B.dylib 0x9000c66c vfprintf + 0x4c 6 libSystem.B.dylib 0x9000d3bc fprintf + 0x1c 7 libSystem.B.dylib 0x90054934 vwarnx + 0x54 8 libSystem.B.dylib 0x900548bc warnx + 0x1c 9 netstat 0x0000a460 kread + 0x154 10 netstat 0x0000b9e8 p_tree + 0x30 11 netstat 0x0000bb28 p_tree + 0x170 Connected to the net via AirPort. Here is the relevant snippet from "ifconfig -a" (with my MAC address removed for privacy): en1: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 inet6 [omitted] prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x5 inet 192.168.2.2 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255 ether [omitted] media: autoselect status: active supported media: autoselect |

If this is bothering you, you should try one of the fixes suggested above in this thread. |

Worked for me as well. I just put in the name of my boot volume, and have not seen the issue raise it's ugly head again since! |

Erm? I'm sorry, but I had already read the thread, and I was merely trying to contribute some diagnostic information. I won't be using the suggested "fix" because it's not a fix. A "fix" would correct the problem without removing existing functionality. The suggestion is actually what you might call a "kludge" or a "workaround" (or even an "ugly hack" if you didn't feel like being so kind), because it requires tampering with Apple-provided software in such a way as to remove functionality. People who apply this "fix" may have to re-apply it if future Apple software updates overwrite their changes, and in the event that Apple fixes the bug they'll never notice the fix. It was "bothering me", to use your language, but the only "fix" I used was to kill the stuck process with "sudo kill". Took all of about three seconds. For what it's worth, I haven't seen the problem again lately. Since I posted I've upgraded to 10.3.7. That may or may not have something to do with it. |

On my Dual 2.5 G5 netstat has been a problem for me as well. I usually don't want to do tampering with underlying scripts/software that might compromise a system update in the future. What has worked for me is to clean the system cache (as provided by the script in the Maintain GUI for various command-line house-cleaning functions) and then do a restart. Netstat doesn't return to consume our Dual G5 for another 5 to 10 days (our Dual G5 is up 24/7).
