X Mac invisible in network...HELP!

When my mac is running in X other user on the network (running MacOs 9.x) can't log in through the chooser (TCP/IP LAN). I can see them but they don't see me (unless logging in through accesing IP adress). How can I fix this?? Very important..have 2 convice my bosses 2 work with X

I have had this trouble as well. mainly with my ibook becuase it is not on the network all the time. My imac seems to be fine. My father has the same trouble with his imac too. I have only X on my two machines and he has classic and X on his. what seems to help to get it to show up is to turn off applesharing and then back on and restart the machine, but there has to be a better way to do it since I try not to restart my machines since they should not have to be restarted ever. This seems to work pretty decently on my ibook but not so well on my fathers imac. that is all I can offer.

Go to the mac running X.
Launch Terminal: Applications > Utilities > Terminal

then once open type:
ping <the ipaddress of one of the other macs>

if you see a response back you know the X mac can reach the other macs.
On mac running X turn on ssh access
System Preferences > Sharing > Application tab
check the box "Allow remote login"

then close prefs then go to one of the other macs and use an ssh client like Niftytelnet with ssh and ssh to the X mac.
You should be able to login at command prompt.

Now if you want to do file sharing, well you will have to have filesharing and appleshare turned on on both ends.

The problem is partial in X..if i'm in X and choose connect to server i can seel all Mac's in the network. The problem is that my computer (has same name in 9.x and X) isn't available in the other Mac's Chooser menu (although my ip adress is still teh same, name's the same etc..) If one of the other Mac's types my ipadress in the IP-adress server box in the chooser they can connect. So why am i not in appleshare but still in the network through TCP/IP?? Maybe this clears my question a bit more...

I use to have the same problem on my local LAN, i have 6 machines 4 wired and 2 wireless, but it was with earlier version of Mac Os X. Now that i have Mac OS X 10.1.3 and 10.1.4 the issue has gone a way, well it only happened once but i think it was because i did not have the machines running X setup correctly.

This is what i did:

In the network panel i went to the Show drop down menu and selected Active ports. Once i did that i got a list of ports. I made sure Ethernet was selected and i put it a the top of the list by dragging it there. Than i made sure AppleTalk is active in the AppleTalk tab and i set it to automatically. And that is it. now not only my wired machines see my OS X machines when going to the chooser but my wireless do as well.

well, hopefully that works for you, it seems that it did for me.

Macos X has a certain amount of complexity (goofieness) that comes from running two operating systems at the same time. I remember I had to solve a related problem in just this manner.

Unfortunatly no show of X in 9.x machines in chooser..can't seem to figure it out..maybe i'll wait until we're on the new network (in 5 days)..You will hear from me again...

Here are a coupel ideas;

1- APpleTalk must be active on ONE port. (i.e. Ethernet, NOT Ethernet and Airport)

2- Sharing must be enabled in X and sometimes if the machine has recently been sleeping you need to stop sharing and restart it. AppleTalk seems to have some issue with sleep.

3- If classic is running make sure AppleTalk is active for the same ports OR even better TURN IT OFF. After you stop Classic, again, restart file sharing.

4- Anything you do that invloves rebooting can be done by starting and stopping the services and/or logging in and out.

5- Dont name the X machine and 9 machine the same (even if they are the same physical machine)

6- Use the 1-800-APL-CARE resource.
