Bless this System folder?

Using Retrospect v.5 from an OS X partiton I have used 'Duplicate' to make a bootable backup on an external Maxtor 80GB FireWire drive. The Retrospect duplicated volume is not bootable, but other partitions are. This duplicated volume boots into a hang, suggesting that the System folder may not be blessed. How do I do this? (or any other ideas you might have)

Use the bless command:

sudo bless -folder '/System' -setOF

replace '/System' by the full path of the system folder you want the computer to boot on. Then reboot.

Gee, ateles, that's a cool hint. I didn't know about the 'bless' terminal command. But it turns out, it didn't work; the Duplicated volume still won't boot. Dantz hasn't been any help, and I'm not the only one with this Retrospect failure. What a disappointment. Now I need to try something else. Anybody have this happen and get it figured out?

Too bad it didn't work. Let me ask you a question: are you trying to boot as OS X or OS 9? If its OS 9 then the folder option should be -folder9 instead of -folder. Also make sure that you are correctly specifying the path of the system folder in your external hard drive. In OSX It should be /Volumes/Name_of_your_Volume/System/Library/CoreServices

type 'man bless' for more information on bless...

Cheers,

Ateles

ateles - I'm booting into an OS X volume and I did go look at 'man bless' and noticed the CoreServices pointer. I will try that by dropping CoreServices from a Finder window into the Terminal window to get the path and see what happens. Thanks for the update.
