In the "complete overkill" category, any FireWire equipped videocam can be a webcam. Just connect the camera and then use Oculus to configure the 'web' piece of the task.

I used Oculus at Christmas with our videocamera to capture a "time lapse" package opening - one picture every 10 seconds for a couple hours. I wrote it all to disk, but could just as easily have sent it to the web. Tons of options and relatively easy to setup, and quite affordable.

Not exactly what you wanted, I know, but it's the best I'm aware of at present.

Check these guys out. They have a Mac OS X driver for the following supported camera's...

Btw, I use Oculus with OS 9.2.2 at work (inside the firewall). It's pretty nifty.

Re: portable webcam for OSX?

Is there any software that will allow me to stream video and audio from a FireWire camcorder? One frame every 10 seconds seems too slow. How about 10 frames per second?

Thanks,

Currently there is no OS X streaming solution - OS 9 solutions are available. As soon as Apple gets the licensing worked out with QT6 and the MPEG people then they will be releasing QTBroadcaster that will allow us OS X people to broadcast streaming video.

Until then - you might want to download a copy of the free Quicktime Streaming Server and play around with it - kick the tires etc. More than likely you will need to be familiar with this software to use Quicktime Bradcaster. QTStreaming Server is a really nice pkg that allows you to stream pre-recorded movies and even stream MP3's etc.
