Not possible. That's the largest video resolution the built-in video supports.

Sorry, not joking. It's the video card and (lack of) video RAM. Part of the price that you pay for portability. The PowerBook's aren't much better for resolution. |

That's pretty standard on a screen that's that size... As I understand it, it's more the function of a small(er than you would otherwise have) LCD screen, rather than the video card. While CRTs can cram a lot of pixels in a little bit of space, LCDs don't have such electromagnetic freedom.
The 17" Powerbook has a 1440 x 900 resolution, not bad I think In fact, more on the "it's a function of the screen, not the video card" vein, the 17" Apple Studio Display has a resolution of 1280 x 1024 (pretty similar to the Powerbook in terms of pixel density), even if you're using it on a G5. The moral of the story: if you're going to get an LCD screen, and you want resolution, get a damn big one. |

Actually we're both right.. if you hook up an external monitor you're limited by the VRAM and capabilites of the built-in video. But robo is correct about the limitations of the LCDs as well..

nice
On my iBook 800 I could run 1280x1024 using monitor spanning (using the hack) on an external monitor. By teh way, nice sig. Go Patties!

It's not the video card from a lack of VRAM standpoint. The card, technically, can drive higher resolutions (if you don't believe me, check out a first-gen PowerBook). It's a limitation imposed by Apple that it can't do more than mirroring at 1024x768. The LCD is parked at 1024x768 max (as LCDs are designed for specific resolutions), so when it mirrors, that's all you can get.

Re: nice
Mind sharing the hack? I got an iBook 700. I can only get 1024x768 on an external monitor even if I know the video ram and the video card are both able to go higher. |
