Belkin KVM (1 Mac Panther / 1 PC WinXP) Scroll Lock Issue

Hi everyone,

I read through everything before I posted this one, I couldn't find anything on it and it really isn't a major issue - just a minor annoyance. I have a new Belkin OmniPort 4 Port KVM hooked up to a WinXP workstation and my Mac, a B&W G3 running OS-X Panther. First off, the KVM works great... The only catch is that the Mac must be physically on the KVM during a reboot cycle otherwise the keyboard and mouse get "lost", no big deal though. My issue is:

The belkin unit requires a user to smash scroll lock twice, then use the arrow keys to (up/down) to pick the computer they wish to control. On the Mac, when you do this is begins complaining about wanting to Shutdown/Restart/etc... I'd like to remap the Scroll Lock key on the Mac side to something else, however for the life of me cannot figure out an easy way to do this... Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Scott

Ok, I fixed it...

Wow, literally minutes after I posted this question I found the answer on Belkin's support site - I couldn't find it before - weird! Here it is ...

The Scroll Lock function maps to the power key on the Macintosh. To prevent that from happening, follow the steps below.

Double click your hard drive icon and open Simple Text. Press ESC_S to find out the status of the EPROM. If Y is not on the list, press ESC_Y. You should now see Y in the list. Close Simple Text and your hard drive. The Scroll lock key is now ready to be used on the KVM to switch between ports from the Macintosh computer without prompting you to power off.

To reactivate the Scroll Lock key as the power key on your Macintosh follow the steps below.

Go back to Simple Text and press ESC_Y to remove Y from the list. Press ESC_S to verify that Y was removed from the list. Close Simple Text. You can now use the Scroll Lock feature to power off your Macintosh.

scroll lock key on another keyboard?

Does this fix work with other keyboards?

I have an ergonomic keyboard, and it seems like the scroll lock key is hidden underneath a crtl key. Of course when I press ctrl, the contextual menu pops up. Can I remap it to a totally different key?

Also, I don't have simple text, do you mean text edit?

Thanks,

Jonah

hi jonahshark,

I read this thread after one hour off energy wasting research to turn scroll lock off to edit an excel sheet proberly. due to this thread I tried more and more compination with ctrl-key. *tata* solution on apple wireless keyboard is to press "ctrl" + "F14" that toggles scroll lock on and off.

Hope that could help. Grettings from Berlin.
