Question Playing Embedded Real Movies in Safari?

i'm curious if anyone is able to play Real movies embedded in web pages in Safari?

i've been unable to do so since Safari was released, and i'm wondering if it's something about my system.

(please note i'm talking about Real movies that need to play directly in Safari as part of a web page, not Real movies which play in RealPlayer.)

I usually use Firebird, but I just tried to watch a video at MTV.com. The Shins' video for "So Says I" plays right in Safari without launching an external Real Player app.

thanks for the example link to focus the discussion.

however, the link does not work for me.

i guess that kinda answers one question - it's something about my system. now, i'd like to figure out how to fix it.

when i go through that link, i get the error message:

Quote:
The page “media player | mtv.com” attemped to load a plug-in named “RealPlayer(tm) G2 LiveConnect-Enabled Plug-in (Mac)”, but the plug-in failed to load successfully.

however, when i select the "Installed Plug-ins" menu item from the "Help" menu in Safari, I show:

Quote:
RealPlayer(tm) G2 LiveConnect-Enabled Plug-in (Mac)

RealPlayer(tm) LiveConnect-Enabled Plug-in — from file “RealPlayer Plugin”.

audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin
RealPlayer(tm) as Plug-in
rpm

so obviously i have at least a partial installation of the RealPlayer plug-in.

i've tried reinstalling RealPlayer several times.

any suggestions?

When I first tried to open the video I got the same error message as reported above. However, I then went to the RealOne Player application and selected Check for Updates. There were three updates that needed to be installed (total of 161 kb) and after that the video is now playing fine within Safari.

RealOne Player reports no updates available for me.

anyone with a working plug-in want to share the contents of their /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ folder?

Oh. The other Real item is an alias, too (didn't see the arrow at first).

RealOne Player:Contents:MacOS:RealPlayer Plugin.xpt

And now that I think about it, I guess I didn't have to include every plugin in the above list. Oh well.

ok. that gives me something to troubleshoot. neither RealPlayer plug-in is an alias on my system.

i'm going to make the aliases for myself, but before i do, one more question:

are they aliases or symbolic links?

(the only way i know to check this is to look at the size of the alias files. symbolic links will be generally less than 500 bytes, while aliases will be generally larger than 4 KB.)
